Lancaster's Tenure at the DOB is History

lancasterDN121007.jpgPatricia Lancaster, the recently embattled Commissioner of the Department of Buildings, has resigned, according to City Room. Mayor Bloomberg announced the resignation and Lancaster released the following statement:

Today I submitted my resignation, which Mayor Bloomberg accepted. It has been an honor serving in his administration and I thank the Mayor for this opportunity. After six years in public service, I made this decision because I felt it was time to return to the private sector. I am proud of the groundbreaking work the department has done during my tenure to root out corruption, increase transparency, overhaul the building code and increase safety for workers and the public alike. My message today to the talented and capable staff at the Department of Buildings is to keep up the hard work: you’ve made so much important progress. It has been my distinct pleasure working with you.

It's unclear at this time who Lancaster's replacement will be.

All she had to do was type in this http://nyc.gov/html/dob/html/home/home.shtml

anyone who no longer has to go to each borough office should commend Bloomberg and the former commissioner.

"increase safety for workers and the public alike...talented and capable staff...keep up the hard work...you’ve made so much important progress..."

Laughable.

not an endorsement or defense of her, but would be unfair to note how grossly understaffed DOB has grown over the past 5 years. little realistic staffing adjustments made to keep pace with the boom in construction.

Thanks for playing, Pat. Enjoy the home game and a year's supply of Turtle Wax. Next crony, please.

Great!
Is that any sort of justice?
People have died and others lives have been, forever changed by her willful negligence.
She, along with her boss (Mayor Bloomberg) should be prosecuted for there crimes.
Letting her resign is just another joke on the tax payers.
Bloomberg orchestrated this to cover up for his own complicity in allowing the continued violations of the Building code and the law. All for the sake of the real estate transfer taxes that were generated to keep the City's books in the black for the last 5 or so years.
Disgusted!

Wow--absolutely no humility or acceptance of responsibility. Absolutely fucking disgusting.

Let her be the fall-gal while Bloomie and his budget don't fund the dept for enough staffing smell like roses.
Got to admit he is smart (while his admirers wear rose colored glasses).

Hopefully they'll hire someone with a more up-to-date hair style...male or female

2.15 PM;

I think you need to get out more on the weekends.

BrooklynLove,

Why do you disapprove of our elected officials? Bloomberg is our elected mayor, and he has accepted the resignation of Lancaster, so in order to have a smoothly running society, I should hope you accept his decision.

being thrown under the bus by the mayor goes with the job as commissioner. Ms. Lancaster was one of the best people in the administration. she was not the one who wanted more more MORE development. but she is the one taking the bullet.

4:17 - i pass no judgment either way re lancaster. be it lancaster or john thain as dob commish, it's an exercise in futility if the city is not going to staff the dept adequately (or even close to adequately).

Posted by: BrooklynLove at April 22, 2008 8:26 PM

Before the next victim takes charge of DOB, there should be an explanation by the Mayor of the mission of that agency.

Who's a whacko?
Seems to me that you may be the whacko. Who ever it is that posted at 2:15 happens to have hit the nail on the head.
If that is what you call whacko then I wish there were alot more people just like that.

The engineer that was supposed to have inspected the crane that collapsed was in a coffee shop drinking coffee instead of inspecting the crane. That particular incident had nothing to do with understaffing. Although I agree that understaffing is an issue at DOB, most city agencies are understaffed and they have all been asked to do more with less. The most successful of the Commissioners knows how to light the fire under the asses of some of those lazy civil servants in their employ. This lady didn't have a clue.

Benson -
I happen to agree with 2:15
Anyway - Why would anyone want to go out on the weekends (or anytime) in this city when 25 tons of steel are flying across the streets, thanks to the idiots running this city?

Posted by: guest at April 22, 2008 9:58 PM

We need more wacko's and less bureaucrats.
