Development Watch: MTA Delays at 53 Broadway

The MTA has long been associated with delays, but usually they can be measured in minutes not months. Not so at 53 Broadway in Williamsburg. Back in March we noted that the 72-unit development at the corner of Broadway and Wythe had been having some trouble getting traction, attributing the slow pace to funding difficulties. Now we hear that the latest snag involves a pesky neighbor: Turns out one of the properties on South 6th Street that backs up to the site is an MTA switching station for the J/M/Z trains that travel over the nearby Williamsburg Bridge. Evidently there are some technical issues that the MTA has to sort out before work can continue at 53 Broadway. Expected delay: Two months. Meanwhile, the makeover of Broadway is almost complete.
