Council to Grill MTA About G Train Service

g-train-waiting-04-2008.jpg
-"This would connect the G-train with the rest of civilization. It is a great idea. Would stop me from moving from the area."

-"It's no secret that the G train is one of the least convenient lines in the MTA. Please consider expanding this often forgotten line."

-"This would improve the economic vitality of all communities along the G line and contribute to a better Brooklyn and NYC."

These are a few of the comments from the 1,000+ people who've signed the online petition lobbying the MTA to connect G service to the Atlantic-Pacific station. The much-maligned line will be the subject a City Council oversight hearing on Tuesday, April 8 at 1:00pm where MTA officials will be asked to speak about ridership data, plans for the future like the extension, and existing service conditions. The meeting will occur in the Council Chambers at City Hall, and it's a can't-miss for folks who are lobbying for change on the line.

Finally, but maybe not. Sly Bloomberg raised the MTA fares, but after many excuses won't resume subway improvement. Gotcha, got your money.

I'd love to see a tunnel connection happen but I doubt it ever will, as this tunnel would involve and benefit the one and only line that doesn't enter Manhattan.

BUT...Why can't they simply program the metro card to allow a free transfer between any trains at Atlantic/Pacific and the Fulton street G? It would be so easy and it makes sense with the stations so close. And maybe they could throw in free transfers between the C train and these other lines while they're at it.

HOWEVER, It's the MTA, so you know that even if they read this and think "Wow, what an easy and inexpensive solution!" they'll still come back with twenty reasons why it can't happen.

I want 2 out of 3 trains on the F/V track in Manhattan to be an F.

How 'bout extending the V train into Brooklyn and providing express service on the F line in Brooklyn. Also, there's been talk of providing G train service to Church Avenue. But, is that even going to happen? Doubt it.

NO! the G is fine, leave it as is. It'll only be crowded and more delayed if they link it to Atlantic.

Posted by: guest at April 2, 2008 11:01 AM

The G train should be a free transfer at the Broadway G/ Lorimer JMZ as well. It's a free transfer from bus to train, but not train to train.

Posted by: guest at April 2, 2008 11:15 AM

A free transfer (Atlantic Ave and Broadway/lorimer) for those who don't buy unlimited would be fine but really stupid waste of funds to build tunnel.
I love the G - (I go between F/G Bergen St and E53rd/Lex) - and I get seat and more dependable especially evening rush(or rather slow down to crawl) hour.

PS- Johnny - there are at least 2 F's per V train on 6th Avenue.

Posted by: guest at April 2, 2008 12:01 PM

I get on at 50th street - theres at least 2 to 3 Fs per V train already.

to g-train lover 11:01. . .April fools day was yesterday!

Posted by: guest at April 2, 2008 12:40 PM

All you have to do is have an unlimited Metro Card, walk outside from G train to Atlantic Ave Station and go back inside. I do it all the time.

Yeah a long underground tunnel would make it more convenient, but it could also turn into a "smells of pee and haven for muggers" tunnel.

Posted by: guest at April 2, 2008 12:40 PM

Don't change the G. It already gets delayed. More stops with all those commuters will screw it up.

Posted by: guest at April 2, 2008 12:42 PM

but if they fixed the G, it wouldnt feel so much like the boat ride in willy wonka anymore.

It makes no sense why they don't review the whole system and add more "free out of system subway transfer (excluding single-ride ticket)" opportunities. These cost them zero to construct other than some signs and their cartographer will smoke one less cigarette one day to add the while line to The Map. Building a tunnel will not shorten the transfer. The tunnels simply keep people out of the cold and rain half the time and out of the sunshine the other half. They are still built out of a token-based mentality. I mean, look at the current MR/ACF connection. It takes years to build, costs a fortune, all to save people from walking less than 100 yards above ground without even crossing a street.

Use the construction money to add more elevators for the handicapped, old, lazy, or luggage-laden.

Dear G Friends:

It's happening -- NYC Council Transportation Committee Chair John Liu has organized an oversight hearing on G train service. Witnesses from the MTA will be asked to speak about ridership data, plans for the future, conditions, and other issues regarding G line service.

Time/Date: Tuesday, April 8 at 1:00pm
Location: Council Chambers, City Hall

Re: Oversight: What is the MTA doing to improve service on the G line?/Resolution #1262 Calling upon MTA to immediately improve service on the G line and to not implement any service cuts.

We need to ensure a LARGE turnout for this. Email anyone who might be able to attend this and has expressed frustration about G line service -- we all need to get together and turn out in force to tell the NYC Council our own experiences on the line, as well as dealing with the MTA.

Yeah, can't the MTA at least throw its lowly Pay Per Ride customers some street transfers now, so we too can move between stations in Brooklyn like our privileged Unlimited cardholding counterparts? I especially love transferring between the G at Broadway and the J at Hewes Street -- awesome connection between Lower East Side and Greenpoint/Williamsburg, or LES & Smith Street.

Save The G says that if you absolutely CAN'T testify in person next Tuesday, their volunteers will submit your written testimony for you, and it will be entered into the official hearing record.

Email your statement, with your full name & address (otherwise it's not official testimony) to savetheg@yahoo.com. STG pledges that no one will see these statements but the Council transportation committee members and their aides. (Keep language clean, folks; it's supposed to be a family show...)

Connecting Hoyt Schermerhorn to the IRT makes way more sense. And the METRO card allows a transfer anyway,or can be programmed to anyway as said above. But the MTA has no money so why are even talking about this?
Finally if the GG itself ran more frequently people wouldn't complain to begin with.

Posted by: guest at April 2, 2008 6:14 PM

isn't ironic and typical of the MTA in it's "ways of mysterious operations" to hold this hearing in the middle of a weekday - WHEN MOST PEOPLE WHO ARE REGULARLY INCONVENIENCED BY THE LACK OF SERVICE ARE AT WORK..................the MTA is such a farce and should be disbanded........they are crooked and useless. I for one will be sumbitting my written testimony since i will be at work at 1pm on a Tuesday.
