Clamping Down on Curb Cutting

driveway-0408.jpg
This should be a crowd pleaser. The Daily News and the New York Times both have articles today about new legislation that will make it a lot tougher to convert front yards into parking lots. The Times notes that legislation to be voted on by the City Council this week will not only make it harder to get approval for a curb cut, it will step up enforcement of curb cuts that have already been made illegally. If all goes well, the DOT will be able to remove illegal curb cuts at the homeowner's expense. If approved, the new bill would also prevent homeowners from paving over their entire front yards. “[Curb cutting] is the bane of many people’s existence,” said Councilman Vincent Gentile, a sponsor of the bills. “It is an issue that is burning in people many times over, especially those that are affected by the curb cut and not able to park anymore.”

Curb cuts are selfish, ugly, and remove areas for plants and trees.

Cars are a hassle, those of us who own them know that and many feel it is a shared burden not to be relieved by removing a shared space to create a private one.

Do I hear Barbara Corcoran crying?

From my understanding of the new law, parking spaces like that will still be legal, no? Only 25% - 50% of the yard will need to be "green".

Oh give it a rest. Stop complaining. You not the person who has to drive around an hour looking for parking. Plus if the person owns the house it is their business to do what the want. Who are you to say what goes. AS for the green space, they can add some planters and call it a day. Who is the city to mandate what you do wiht your front yard. WHy don't they focus on the new building going on in the city and Brooklyn that is polluting our air. I don't see anyone complaining about that.

"Who is the city to mandate what you do wiht your front yard"

Who are you to mandate what can be done on OUR sidewalks and curbs?

I know that house and now it's a hole in the ground waiting for some condo construction, no doubt.
Surpise, it's in Williamsburg.

If you want parking pay for it. Free and easy to find parking is not a right.

Posted by: guest at April 28, 2008 12:00 PM

those with cars should be the ones suffering to find a place to put their gas guzzlers. there's no need to own a car in brownstone brooklyn, so suck it up and pay for a parking garage. lawns and trees shouldn't be lost to there stupid, selfish curb cutters. who wants to live surrounded by nothing but asphalt? ditch the car and get a bike or metrocard, you lazy tree-haters.

Posted by: guest at April 28, 2008 12:07 PM

Lawns and trees. Tap your heels three times and you might also wake up in Kansas. You didn't decide to live in NYC for lawns and tress did you? If every house had its' own private drive, we wouldn't be having this conversation and no one would be complaining. But as most of your multi million dollar brownstones were developed during horse and buggy days your answer is the rest shouldn't own a car? What communist coutry did you just come from? Please, tell me what else I should and should not do with private property and what else needs to meet with your approval within the privacy of my home?

I'm not a fan of curb cuts but with affluence comes more toys--cars included. What annoys me is the clear need for parking with reduction of access.
Have you noticed that the Dept. of Traffic is arbitrarily eliminating parking spots without considering the ongoing need?

12:00 As long as someone follows city regs, plans for, and gets approval for a curb cut legally for parking. Blow Me! Have fun paying for your parking and walking back and forth to your car.

Curb cuts and driveways for parking one car do not create more parking. Curb cuts to create driveways takes away two street-parking spots in front of the house.

However, it's not the driveway that made this house ugly in the picture.

The car is about the nicest thing in the picture. Spot on 1:12. Tacky and tasteless.

hey 12:58, want to sign my petition to clear cut prospect park and tun it into a parking lot?

Posted by: guest at April 28, 2008 1:25 PM

I know, 1:19. I especially like the "support our troops" ribbon bumper stickers on the back of the gas-guzzling SUV.

4- wheel drive for urban driving. Nice.

Posted by: guest at April 28, 2008 1:36 PM

1:25 I do not. Why? Besides the fact that I enjoy Prospect Park and you are an A-hole, you are trying to compare Public and Private property. If you wish to be so generous, buy up the land and donate it to NYC Parks. You'll have more green space. You could be the next Rockefellar. They will name a park after you then and you could be imortal. Sounds about as plausible as living in NYC to avoid asphalt.

Pay for parking? where? hello? hello? are you just stupid or really really stupid - 12:00 pm??> THERE IS NO BLOODY PARKING! curb cuts on your own damn property should be legal.

this city blows because of the entitled judgmental aholes who are posting here.

other people's property and lives are not your business.

if so, then let everyone comment and judge your decisions.

Posted by: guest at April 28, 2008 3:43 PM

BRAVO!!!!

Let these selfish A-holes look for parking like the rest of the city. Could be wrong but the road outside my house isn't actually my property. Blocking it for my personal use aint exactly my divine right.

Posted by: Johnny at April 28, 2008 9:27 PM

yay! yay! yay! johnny...tell it like it is brother. those fucktards with cars can shove it! seriously, those petrol-using tards should pay, pay, pay... 3:43-where the hell do you live? there's plenty of parking in brownstone brooklyn--it just costs money. there's a ton of garage parking, all over. suck it up and pay dude or dudette. you're the asshat messing with the ozone, so deal. there should be a lot more carlessness in brooklyn. grand army plaza should be carless. get rid of yer shitboxes!
