Brooklyn Flea Week 4 on Sunday!

We can't seem to buy any sunshine at The Flea, but there's a ton of things you can buy from the 175-odd vendors who set up every weekend in the 40,000-square-foot school yard at the Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Fort Greene. Last weekend saw the arrival of a ton of new furniture dealers (see above); this weekend there's a whole 'nuther wave of vendors (including A&J 20th Century Design, formerly of Lafayette Street in Manhattan!). For more details check out
yesterday's post on the Brooklyn Flea blog. The market is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located at 176 Lafayette Avenue. Closet trains are the C and G to Washington/Clinton. Or you can take any of the number of trains that go to Atlantic Station and make the 10-minute stroll up Lafayette Avenue from there.
UPDATE: Despite the morning rain, about 80% of the vendors are set up and open for business today. Come check it out!

Good luck with the weather. I live down a couple of blocks on Lafayette but still haven't gotten over ... slipped my mind the first Sunday unfortunately, and I was out of town for the other two Sundays.
I was amazed at the crowds of people on Lafayette that first Sunday! Kept wondering why there were so many more people than usual...didn't dawn on me until later that day I had missed the Flea!
Good luck...

Hey I was @ the Flea this past sunday..live a block away and I have to say it is a success so far. But Mr B are you gonna bring any home renovation stuff? Embarking on renovations soon and would love to see whats out there.

Looks like we'll finally get to check it out this weekend.
I hope there is'nt much we want; our house already looks like a flea market inside.
Maybe we should get a table and unload some of our stuff.
Either way, we'll be there.

Does it still go on rain or shine?
Do the furniture vendors choose not to set up if it's raining.
Just wondering if it's worth the trip out?

As so much of the success of “The Flea” (and Brownstoner in general) is driven by community involvement and goodwill – I wonder if there is any way to creatively harness the success of the Brooklyn Flea initiative to contribute to a specific community project/goal.
Is this already being done or considered?

Anyone even remotely surprised to learn of Brownstoner's extraordinary pecuniary interest in this event?

Not I. Isn't this public land? It's nice to have friends in big places.
Posted by: guest at April 25, 2008 5:49 PM
Brownstoner's put in and is putting in a lot of work to make this happen. They should make some money.
Posted by: guest at April 25, 2008 5:53 PM
I'm pretty sure it's private land owned by the Catholic School. Different kind of friends in high places!
Posted by: guest at April 25, 2008 5:54 PM
It was stated from the very beginning that the school would benefit from having the Flea there. They need the money, and are a worthy cause. The overwhelming majority of the students are on scholarships, and are members of various minority groups. Supporting the school is helping to get our future generations out of poverty, and providing them with a good education.
What can be wrong with that?

It does not fit so nicely does it?

How many fleas are there going to be? I visited the one last Sunday and had the sense that it had pretty much run its course.

"As so much of the success of “The Flea” (and Brownstoner in general) is driven by community involvement and goodwill"
Thanks for the laugh. I don't know about "The Flea", but this blog is primarily about promoting race hatred and class warfare.
Posted by: guest at April 26, 2008 9:20 AM
that would be on you 9:20 AM - the blog has always been interested in architecture, renovation, and real estate. the posters are responsible for all the nutso race/class issues. take responsibility.
this is yet another example of brownstoner working his butt off making something cool happen that benefits the school and the neighborhood - and how there are always bitter people out there getting the wrong end of the stick. he has found a way to support himself by creating something he is passionate about and we, the readers, appreciate the innovation. the rest of you go find something productive to do with yourselves besides bashing someone who has more moxie than you.
Posted by: guest at April 27, 2008 7:48 AM
Stop playing dumb, 7:48 (at least I assume you're playing). This blog is interested in selling advertising. To do this, it tries to stir up race hatred and class resentment. Everyone knows this. All "Brownstoner" works his butt off to do is to make money at the expense of others and especially at the expense of Brooklyn. Shame on you.

Then why are you here 10:16?

Then why are you here 10:16?
Posted by: guest at April 27, 2008 10:46 AM
10:16 has got to be one of the most ignorant posters to ever comment on this website.
please don't feed the troll.
Posted by: guest at April 27, 2008 11:05 AM
When there is a known purveyor of hatred and ill will in my neighborhood, I make it a point to watch them. I should hope you would as well.
Next question?
Posted by: guest at April 27, 2008 11:09 AM
Neighborhood-bashing, stroller-bashing, all the nastiness is what drove up traffic here and made this blog big. More traffic = more advertisers.
With the growing popularity of blogs to sell ads, the old "sex sells" adage of old media has become: Social Aggression Sells.
Everybody else knows it. It's being written about all over the place. All you old fogies are just slow to catch on.
Posted by: guest at April 27, 2008 11:48 AM
To all the nattering nabobs out there: We realize that there are many coming to this blog with their own agendas with respect to real estate or social issues. It is a sign of how popular and well known this blog has become that many are trying to spin messages, mostly negative. We who find it valuable ignore the 'noise', skip the stupid posts and get the same useful information we always have. This website made me realize I could handle a renovation and made a big difference in my life. If Mr. B makes a few dollars with the Brownstoner franchise so what. I doubt you make hedge fund money running flea markets. More power to him.
Posted by: mimi at April 27, 2008 2:33 PM
That's not the issuer 2:33. It's the pretense of good will that bothers me; I can deal with stated agendas.
Posted by: guest at April 27, 2008 5:24 PM
I am a far from rich, minority group member, living in Brownstone Bklyn, who has been reading this blog from almost the beginning, and I say 5:24, you are wrong.
I agree, lots of hatred and venom has been spewed here, but not from Brownstoner himself. He could spend his days, or pay someone, monitoring every thread and delete the crap, but where is the exchange of free speech and ideas then? I don't need to have what I read sanitized. I'd rather the a**holes and bigots were up front, where I can see them, rather than deleted. This way, I know they are out there and what they think.
There have been times when I think he is a bit elitist, or ignorant of history and situations, and I've called him on it, as have others, and he is not unreasonable about admitting he doesn't know everything. Who does? Everyone comes to the table with preset ideas. It's the exchange of those ideas that can produce change. I've enjoyed the blog, learned a lot about real estate and my fellow Bklynites, good and bad. I'm glad the blog exists, and I'm glad he's able to make a living from it and associated ventures.
Why are we always so suspicious and jealous when someone else runs with an idea and makes good? If you think he's got sinister ulterior motives, then start your own market, blog, or business, and show him what's what.

Oh please, spare us the melodrama.
Yes, this blog is a venue for hate, greed and represents many forces that would like to destroy Brooklyn. However, it is one venue of hate among many, and quite mundane in its operations.
Believe me, hate can take many forms. This blog is only one of them, and not a particularly noteworthy specimen.
Posted by: guest at April 27, 2008 8:42 PM
Some of you need to get a life. This is a blog for God's sake, don't log on and read it if it makes you so unhappy. And stay away from the flea market too.
Posted by: guest at April 27, 2008 10:36 PM
You know, I've been critical of some gentrification myself, but I cannot for the life of me understand why ANYONE would be against a community based flea market where anyone who can pay for a table can sell their wares.
I grew up in Brooklyn, grew up in Brighton Beach and have seen tons of different flea markets. Granted I will say this one caters to a bit more "twee" tastes than most, but it's a great start and I cannot fathom the complaints. Would people actually be happier if one of those "street fairs" filled with mozzarepas, sock vendors and the same old crap setup there? C'mon, get over it.
And for any of the true old schoolers here, did the Atlantic Antic gather this many whiny complaints back in the day when it started?
Posted by: Jack at April 28, 2008 2:45 AM
Can't you read, idiot? No one here is talking about the "flea".
Posted by: guest at April 28, 2008 6:41 AM
Jack, Atlantic Antic, Seventh Heaven, etc predated the internet where people can publicly kvetch. It was also a different time in the city and I think people looked forward to having fun events in their otherwise ho-hum neighborhoods. I did the street fair circuit throughout the city in the 80's and it was definitely more of a neighborhood feel than these things are today. This market does have a good vibe but you wouldn't know it reading some of the comments here.
And I must say....if there was a sock/glove/hat vendor, I wouldn't bought something every weekend as I've come under dressed each time.
Posted by: rh at April 28, 2008 8:43 AM
Right now I could use a good umbrella.
Posted by: Hal at April 28, 2008 9:16 AM
I especially enjoy ignore really nasty people who don't even bother to sign in to attack the blog and those who share info/thoughts on it. Oh damn, failed again!

I went to BK flea yesterday and I was so disappointed that they would not let me in with my dog. Since when our dogs restricted from being outdoors, especially in fort greene???????????

Since your dog cocked its leg up against a $1500 sofa.

What is the pretense of good will, I don't think they have claimed to be doing some charitable work by having a flea market.
pretense of good will, that is more like the AY project.
If Brownstoner simply had people state their name, and address, email, chances are the crazed hate mongers on this blog, would drop considerably, and the posters would crawl back in to their anonymous holes.
Posted by: guest at April 28, 2008 10:08 AM
Mr. B - couldn't you let those of us with small dogs bring them into the flea if we carry them? I would be much more inclined to visit and patronize the vendors if I could take my dog on a long Sunday morning walk to get there. Otherwise, it's pretty much a waste.
Posted by: guest at April 28, 2008 10:25 AM
no dogs. I agree with the peeing on the sofa and some people may want to "shop" with out your dog sniffing at us or getting tangled in your unruly leash holding. Leave your dog tied to the fence post. or at home. And on the "small dogs" comment- I am really tired of the fashion dogs (ie small) going everywhere. please no dogs. why is that so hard for dog owners to understand- maybe the rest of us don't love your dog like you. you made the choice to have one- you knew the rules. And I like dogs.
Posted by: guest at April 28, 2008 10:37 AM
there is no reason why little dogs carried in bags would not be allowed in the flea.
it is just sheer nasty-ness, as expressed by 10:37, not to do so.
Posted by: guest at April 28, 2008 10:43 AM
It has been stated several times that the reason for the no dog policy is that the flea market is the athletic track and recreation area for the school. The school, sensibly enough, does not want the kids running and falling in dog poo and urine.
If I were a vendor, I wouldn't want Fido nosing and marking on my stuff either. As lovable and well behaved as your pooch is, its still a dog, and will do doggy things. Leave them home.
Posted by: guest at April 28, 2008 11:22 AM
i love that no dogs are allowed.
people who think they are entitled to bring them are disgusting.
speaking of, i have the most beautiful garden out front that i JUST planted last week and walked out this morning to a dog owner just standing there while his dog sat and took a shit in the middle of the garden.
you people with dogs are sick. just because you love them, does not mean we all need to.
stores don't allow dogs and you shop there.
so why would you EXPECT that some place should allow them?
absurd.
go to hell. all of you.
Posted by: guest at April 28, 2008 12:03 PM
As stated above, it's a school policy regarding the dogs. We realize it's inconvenient for some, but we don't have a say in the matter.
Posted by: brownstoner at April 28, 2008 12:16 PM
Was this the last Brooklyn Flea? I noticed that it was not that well attended, and the "umph" seemed to be gone.
Posted by: guest at April 28, 2008 1:19 PM
I found the flea to be quite well attended given the rainy start, cold weather and dready day.
With 20,000 people attending each Flea, I can't even BEGIN to imagine what it's going to be like on a nice, sunny day (which has YET TO HAPPEN!!!).
Congrats for making this Flea such a gigantic success. All my friends in Manhattan are talking about it!!!

So much anger ... It's nastyness like this that partly explains why people often love their pets more than people. I run errands with my dog, if stores/banks don't allow them in, I respect their policy because plenty of businesses do allow them in. No reason to leave fido at home if business owners are ok with it.
Posted by: guest at April 28, 2008 3:15 PM
what happened to the nice people guarding the gates, on the left and right side of the flea? i really liked them for their courtesy and kindness(he offered to watch my dog the weekend before last, while i looked around). he was a dark haired guy w/an earring and she was a blonde and looked like they were quite in love.
very good people.
we need more of them.
Posted by: guest at April 28, 2008 3:47 PM
NO DOGS ...GET OVER IT!
Posted by: guest at April 28, 2008 9:13 PM
I think it is just common knowledge that people who love dogs are generally good, happy people and those who dislike them are generally repressed, odd, and/or nasty folks.
Even people who are allergic but sane, do not begrudge the happiness that others derive from their pooches or kitties.
I believe that if you don't like dogs or cats, you're more than likely not a very nice person. that's it. i have fond it a good indicator of the goodness of a person.
