Streetlevel: Henry Street Vacancies to Join Forces?

Henry-Street-vacancies-0308.jpg
The paper has been removed from the windows of these two vacant storefronts on an otherwise-filled Henry Street, between Orange and Pineapple, revealing that the dividing wall has been removed. Neighboring Blue Pig and Busy Chef, both in troubled retail spots, removed their dividing wall not long ago, though it seems Busy Chef is the busiest. Calls to the sales agent were not returned. Does anybody know if this space is being leased as one spacious unit, which could mean a bank, or two? What do you think Henry Street needs? GMAP

Good wings or a good Mexican food place.

If it has to be a bank, make it a BOA, we need one in the north Heights.

At least 95% of the posts on this site are from people who're logged in as "guest". This means that someone reading the comments on this site will be reading almost everything in faded type. Now, I understand why the faded type is used for "guests". However, in my opinion it's not worth it.

The faded type is clearly legible, but over the long haul it is more fatigue-inducing than regular, darker type. So, Mr. B, do you really want to condemn your readership to slogging through so much faded type?

Just a thought. Again, I do understand why the faded type was introduced. I just don't think it's worth it. You're shooting yourself in the foot (and inducing eyestrain in your readers) as things currently stand.

Theres a residential hall for college students two blocks away. If they do anything it should be something to lure them in.

Posted by: guest at March 26, 2008 3:55 PM

Both a Mexican and BBQ place failed on that block over the past five years. It's always been a lame-duck location.
An old-school bakery might make it.
Or a small casino.

We could use a good fish store in the area. That would be a great location.

Good point GHB. Heights Meat on Clark seems to do rather well, so I agree, a fresh fish place might also do the trick.

Heights is a tough market for restaurants.

Noodle Pudding is PACKED every night. Good food, great service, reasonable prices...but so many others fail.

Why?

It's the Curse of Su Su's Yum Yum and it goes way back.

Posted by: guest at March 27, 2008 11:10 AM

A bar. This area is sorely lacking in places to get a drink.

Posted by: guest at March 27, 2008 11:30 AM

Ah, Su Su's, what a memory. Whatever happened to her -- I remember she opened a new place in Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens but lost rack of her after that...

Su Su opened up a second place on Columbia bet Sackett and Degraw in '89 or so. Hopefully, she's retired in Florida by now.

11.30... there is a bar right next door to these shops, although another one wouldn't hurt.

The storefronts have been combined. The rent is $10,000 per month, renovations continue inside, looking in you can see that work has already begun.

Also I have heard that longtime neighborhood coffee shop will be closing it's doors for good this summer. As they have plans to sell their building.

This is between Cranberry and Orange Streets, not on the next block as wrongly stated. More to the point, the gorgeous art deco ornaments below the windows have been taken out and are likely lost. When the Chinese restaurant took theirs out and threw it away when they were coming in, Landmarks fined them and made them replicate the element (which they did, very poorly). I fervently hope these have been removed for safekeeping by the building's owners, but I fear for the worst. Another example of the steady loss of architectural beauties by uncaring workers. The facings below the new windows were marble, by the way.
