Spitzer, We Hardly Knew Ye
Is there anything else to talk about today? If Spitzer leaves office, we're probably only going to be left with a lot of questions about how he might have triggered change for New York City in general and Brooklyn—and Brooklyn real estate—specifically. As Norman Oder notes on Atlantic Yards Report, Spitzer mostly kept mum on AY, thereby offering his tacit approval for the project. Oder writes that if Spitzer is replaced, his successor might affect changes in Phase 2 of the mega-development. In another big real estate-related topic, Spitzer long ago proposed raising the decontrol cap on rent-stabilized apartments, which would have had a huge impact on a wide cross-section Brooklyn tenants and landlords. (This push hadn't been discussed in many months, though it presumably would have been revived if Democrats gained control of the State Senate.) There's also the question of how Spitzer's resignation might affect congestion pricing, which he had reportedly been drafting a bill for. Any other ideas about the potential fallout for Brooklyn?

Spitzer is a bully and a self-righteous, free-market bashing, doubleface.
Today Wall Streeters are celebrating -probably will see a little rally. This guy extorted corporations and left thousands job-less to promote his self-interested agenda.
Typical sh*t talking politician, full of themselves and their BS agenda, good riddance!

Potential fallout for Brooklyn?
I dunno.
Bruno and the Mob have proved again that they control the power at the end of the day.
Same as it ever was...
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 9:11 AM
Yep, brooklyn bridge park is toast.

Anyone see the pictures of the "Escorts" from the website - Damn!
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 9:28 AM
His opposition set him up and he took the bait.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 9:47 AM
So far, this guy has not actually resigned yet...
What is he waiting for? Does he think he is going to pull a Bill Clinton on this one? Unfortunately Billy got away with it becuase it was just a little consentual sodomy on the side.
Elliot actually committed a Crime! Time to walk away buddy, there is no flubbing this one.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 9:47 AM
I wouldn't be so sure that BBP is toast. If spitzer resigns and Paterson supports the park, I don't see why it doesn't just keep on going. And even if there's some time of uncertainty before things get resolved, BBP is a joint City/State project. If the mayor wants to, he could probably advance it through the City side. It's not like Spitzer was the sole advocate for the park.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 9:52 AM
I'm sure he's working his way out of criminal charges. That's what he's waiting for -- he's not giving up the only leverage he has.
Meanwhile, anyone confirm the blog talk that some of the owners/partners of the call-girl ring live in Brooklyn Heights?
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 9:52 AM
9:52 I caught the tail end of Ti Hua Chang's report last night on I think Channel 9. He was interviewing neighbors of one of the ring leaders and the blurb read Clinton Hill.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 9:56 AM
good point on the leverage 9:52, I hadnt thought of that. I guess he still has those problems aside from losing his office and legacy.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 9:59 AM
Truly a disgrace and is bad for NYS/NYC. Here are just a few projects that will be effected on some level by this moronic egomaniac:
1. 2nd Ave subway (already 1yr behind)
2. WTC site (way behind - and getting more so as State is in charge of Deutche Bank Bld)
3. Eastside Access - LIRR/Granc Central
4. Moynihan Station (already at risk)
5. Brooklyn Bridge Park (see #4)
6. Javits Convention Center future
7. Atlantic Yards (many are cheering this)
8. Hudson Yards
All the above will be adversly effected and delayed or canceled because "The Steamroller" didnt figure out that someone might actually find out that he was seeing hookers on a regular basis.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 9:59 AM
Legacy? - his legacy is secure - as the worst Governor in NYS (if not US) ever and certainly the biggest flop since Brian Bosworth.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 10:04 AM
I admit I dont know who Brian Bosworth is, I am actually fairly young, but I really was refering to his "Corportate Crusader" and "Mr. Clean" Legacy. Surely he is smarting from the thought of forever being known as "Client Number 9" from now on.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 10:08 AM
What I want to know is what was Spitzer working on that was SO crucial to his detractors that this was set up? This didnt happen out of a vacuum. While the general public gets all worked over the whole sex thing, I ssuspect there is a MUCH bigger issue being dodged.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 10:16 AM
Its not just a "Sex Thing". This guy was involved with high priced prostitutes, and based on the wire-taps, it was not a one-time thing.
This guy was the most powerful AG and now governor of NY. Sex issues aside, it is a tremendous conflict of interest to be engaging in clearly illegal activity. Also makes you wonder where he was getting the money to pay for this?
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 10:21 AM
Check my post linked above for info on WCBS's sloppy "Brooklyn Heights" claim.

My wheat bread is now toast....little butter, strawberry jam...lovely. Oh, and Spitzer blew a golden opportunity...schmuck
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 10:32 AM
Apparently Spitzer wasn't the only one who blew things...
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 11, 2008 10:34 AM
10:04, love the Bosworth reference but methinks you're hyperbolizing a bit on the "worst ever" in history.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 10:43 AM
Sad when your old enough to make pop-culture references that adults are too young to get...
Anyway name a Gov who did more 'wrong' in such a short period of time, much less one elected with such a mandate.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 11:04 AM
Talk that this was a "setup" is WAY premature -
The case stemmed from a SAR (suspicious activity report) due to cash transactions that looked like they were designed to avoid Anti-Money Laundering reporting requirements. Once it got to the Feds - wha choice did they have but to investigate - and though they were looking for public corruption - could they really have ignored the prostitution?
About the only thing that could be a "setup" is the filing of the SAR - it is possible that the Financial Institution submitted the SAR b/c of a vendetta against Spitzer (he isnt the most loved guy on Wall St) - But even that is verifiable. All the press has to do is determine if the transactions directly fit within the AML reporting and Financial Inst. reporting policies and if they had been routinely reporting similar transactions of "non-politicos"
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 11:08 AM
As a followup - the AP is reporting that Banks - implying more than one - noticed the suspicious money transactions and filed SARS - if this is true (that more than 1 bank filed a SAR) that sort of puts a bullet in the "setup" theory.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 11:12 AM
He would be setup if he was tricked or taken to the hookers by force. Otherwise, he was just another sleazy customer, who has now been caught. Time to face the music. Another human tragedy unfolds.
Humble yourselves people. Control can be llst quickly in this life of ours.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 11:19 AM
it is unbelievable that someone is trying to find a partisan scape goat here. spitzer fucked up period. he is an entitled rich kid who let power go to his head. simply gross. if he was feeling that itchy, why didn't he just have some threesomes with his wife? only way to avoid a scandal.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 11:21 AM
No. 9 with a bullet!
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 11:22 AM
Would it be illegal if he were just hiring the women so he could shit on them? No sex.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 11:28 AM
Thats interesting 11:28 - I guess that would be based on how one defines "sexual conduct."
I dont think Intercouse or sodomy are the only requisites for prostitution.
If it is legal, I think I may looking into starting a "Hot Lunch" Ring in Park Slope. Lots o Milfs to Pimp out.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 11:36 AM
Does this dramatic flame-out foreshadow an Obama president - maybe age and wisdom (and a lower sex drive) are more important than people are giving credit for.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 11:37 AM
Obama will definately be into some freaky shit. Have you seen his wife? You thought slick Willy was hard-up, wait to you see the Obama Mama's in the Whitehouse.

New York Politics are just a cesspool:
Elliot Spitzer = soon to be indicted & hypocrite of the highest order
Joe Bruno = soon to be indicted
Alan Hevesi - indicted (and probably will be again)
Sheldon Silver = "partner" at largest Plaintiff Law Firm (Ambulance Chasers) in NY - talk about conflict of interest
Andrew Cuomo = cuckold loser who I am sure will be revealed to be another slime.
and then you have all your State Legislatures who are constantly drunk, accused of rape, on the take or other bits of malfeasance.
This State is doomed
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 12:25 PM
When Spitzer described himself as a "f***ing steamroller" who'd have thought it was meant to be taken literally?
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 12:27 PM
He had the girl transported from NY to DC that is a big federal no-no. interstate sex traffic. If he used any, any public funds to pay for his courtesan (at $4,500 a pop she's not just a whore) then he will probably go to jail.
It is really bad.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 1:13 PM
naughty boy. now go away.
Posted by: BrooklynLove at March 11, 2008 1:18 PM
You would think these guys would know better. Especially Elliot after having Bruno trailed for months...Even though this was not a set-up, you would think he would be careful just in case people are watching.
He would have been better off just finding some $100 Whore in DC who probably wouldnt even know who he is. Last I checked, cheap whores didnt follow politics.
What a stupid idiot - Goes to show how we elect fools and jerk-offs into office. Politics in this country is so screwed up and dysfunctional.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 1:27 PM
De Tocqueville said that in a democracy, the best men (citizens) will never go into politics. He is proven right yet again.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 1:57 PM
I predict that this crisis will have little affect (see below) on projects in the pipeline. It will probably hurt congestion pricing, which could use more friends in Albany. Moynihan Station, which is at a key juncture, could also suffer from a lack of leadership.
But bureaucrats like Pat Foye, Avi Schick and Regina Myer will keep most of the current projects rolling along. There may be some course adjustments down the road if David Patterson takes over, but that will be months into his administration, if it occurs at all.
Pet peeve: Would people please familiarize themselves with the difference between affect (the action) and effect (the outcome)? Sorry, it's only a pet peeve, but it's all over the blogosphere today.

Thanks much for sharing your cogent points with us several times. As for hypocrites, why don't you go blow Larry Craig and STFU.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 2:29 PM
Everything will probably just stay the same, the new governor is from the City.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 2:32 PM
"Pat Foye, Avi Schick and Regina Myer will keep most of the current projects rolling along"
Oh really? Those projects have not exactly been rolling along up to now, and without Albany's backing they are not rolling anywhere. Gov. Paterson may well need to clean house a bit in order to work better with his Republican colleagues. A give-and-take shake-up will be inevitable.
I predict Foy will be replced. He's a pain in the ass. The republicans will ask for changes as a show of good faith that Paterson wants to "start over fresh".

what an idiot who would pay 4000 grand for a blow job.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 4:36 PM
I think he got more than a blow job 4:36. And if you read the press releases the hooker was told "he may ask you to some things that might not seem safe."
Also, if it turns out it wasnt his own money, who cares what it costs...Looking at some of the girls from the website, I could see how someone would pay that kind of $ if it wasnt theirs.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 4:52 PM
thanks 4:52.
geeze you would think the higher you are in the public eye, the slicker you should be. If he needed to get some.... he could of just came to 3 Ave in CG and saved $3997 dollars of our money.
Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 5:00 PM
I agree 5:00, see my earlier post at 1:27. A cheap hooker off the street would get the job done and she wouldnt even know or care who he is.

Norman "OCD" Oder will try to attach anything to AY. Hey, Oder, if your blog was worth reading, you wouldn't have to spend time asking other to read your "work".
Why is protitution still illegal? If a person wants to spend money having sex with someone who normally wouldn't give him/her the time of day, then what's the gripe?

If Spitzer had managed to get Albany under control, he'd have deserved a reward.

80,000.00 ??? DAMN!!!
Posted by: guest at March 12, 2008 9:50 AM
Regarding the set-up mentioned earlier, apparently Spitzer paniced after the money transfers and asked the bank to take his name off them. That's when the red flag was raised and they started to investigage. So, looks like he dug his own grave.
Posted by: guest at March 12, 2008 1:02 PM
