Paterson May be a Foe to Eminent Domain

eminent-domain-03-2008.jpgAccording to an article in today's Sun, our new governor could end up opposing projects like Atlantic Yards that involve the use of eminent domain. As a state senator, David Paterson participated in a 2005 rally calling for a statewide moratorium on eminent domain. Councilmember Letitia James, who also took part in the rally, says she hopes Paterson's views on the subject haven't changed. "He stood with me and proposed some legislation and I am very hopeful that the lieutenant governor and soon-to-be governor will honor his commitment and will either issue a moratorium or review the abuse of eminent domain across New York City," says James. Steven Spinola, the president of the Real Estate Board of New York, says it's "premature" to make predictions about where Paterson will stand on eminent domain, but that "It would clearly be a mistake for the state to give up one of its powers to get public improvement projects off the ground." Time will certainly tell.

I'll bet Ratner was shitting his pants more than Spitzer was when all of this went down. With no more cronies in office upstate, Ratner has to buy some new friends.

Posted by: guest at March 14, 2008 11:48 AM

I'm sure that Ratner is not the least bit worried, 11:48. He is influential beyond your wildest dreams and can make friends quickly and easily when it is to his benefit (e.g. hinting at a substantial donation should Paterson wish to run for another term in office, which he will likely do).

Besides, as incoming governor, Paterson has many more pressing matters on his agenda than Atlantic Yards and will give this issue nary a thought.

Don't worry about AY. The crumbling financial markets will drive the last nail into that particular coffin.

if you believe paterson is going to do anything to stop AY i have some bear stearns stock to sell you at 55.

Posted by: BrooklynLove at March 14, 2008 12:50 PM

AY is doing a good job of stopping all on its own. Slowly and painfully, like being nibbled to death by hamsters.

HA HA HA HAAA!

No one knows what happens next, it's all so exciting! One thing is for sure though, not everyone in this world relies on backhanded dealmaking to keep their carreers afloat, You have to believe that some people in this world have integrity.

All in all i'd say that Ratner might be a little bit uneasy at this point.

Posted by: guest at March 14, 2008 1:13 PM

Even just a few checks and balances could derail the AY process.

This is what, the 100th time Brownstoner has posted a picture of Weinstein's graffiti?

The eminent domain proceedings have already taken place for most properties. Weinstein is in court right as he obviously refused an offer by the state. Whatever Pauslon thinks, he doesn't have the authority to turn back the clock.

Atlantic Yards is fully funded, Ratner has a lot of equity AND experience during troubled market conditions. I mean sheesh - the guy built MetroTech when everyone though Brooklyn was finished, the country was in recession and there was no proven market demand for office space in the Borough since the 1920s.

Keep dreaming!

"Atlantic Yards is fully funded"

Keep dreaming, Polemicyst!

"Atlantic Yards is fully funded, Ratner has a lot of equity AND experience during troubled market conditions."

Goldman Sucks is providing 2 Billion dollars for Atlantic Yards, Assfuck! The State is providing 2 Billion more.

There is a big problem, The Muni Bond market is getting assraped!!

Prudential Center is in Downtown Newark NJ and the NETS will be playing there in 2012.

Keep dreaming! Polemicist Bitch!

Someday this war is gonna end...

Polemicist writes, "I mean sheesh - the guy built MetroTech when everyone though Brooklyn was finished".

nice one! are you kidding? everyone thought brooklyn was finished, huh? so Ratner is now the savior of all brooklyn? you are joking, right?! or maybe you just don't have a clue.

it just cracks me up that someone thinks Brooklyn needs Ratner to save it. yes, keep the jokes a-rollin polemecist ...

Posted by: guest at March 14, 2008 2:01 PM

Pole- everyone thought brooklyn was over? Can you please do us all a favor and put that comment back up Ratner's ass.

Posted by: guest at March 14, 2008 4:24 PM

To 2:01

It is you who talks through thy ass! Ratner did save downtown Brooklyn during the Dinkins administration. Metro tech is living proof like it or not. Why do so many people constantly talk so foolishly here?

Well...I for one have regularly complained about the last-ditch effort to slip a Trojan Wedge into the community (a physical one) by closing the Carlton Avenue Bridge.

A LOT of pedestrians rely on that bridge and going around it to use Vanderbilt or the 6th Avenue Bridge can double your travel time. Plus, not everyone is 100% abled. Some of us have mobility issues. It was a mean idea to close the bridge at this stage of NO CONSTRUCTION...all they've done is destroy a convertible structure (Ward's Bakery), demolished some smaller buildings (manufacturing "blight" in the process) and dug around here and there in the old bus parking lot and further west in the yards area.

Nothin' much is happening. They're not taking down the Carlton Bridge, are they? It's simply closed off to pedestrians and cars. I have read that they have to pay to rebuild it no matter what (say they demolish it and do not go forward with AY building) so it seems they are stalling.

Meanwhile, the community cannot access this public thoroughfare.

Thanks!

Anyway, yes, it seems like it is unwinding. Polemescent, you seem to like nothing but highrises and not want to focus on the real the facts about the proposed AY funding, land ownership/control, etc. Go back to your estimating job.

Ratner saved nothing. He's a scumbag developer nothing more. Everything he's "contributed" to Brooklyn is a joke, and don't expect much more from the moron. Brooklyn was a great place and had it's own trajectory without Ratner's misguidance. Brooklyn doesn't equal one building! Stop insulting people's intelligence, 6:37.
