Development Watch: 114 West Street

Over near the Greenpoint waterfront, developer Isaac Katan is in the process of converting a five-story warehouse to residential use (adding a sixth floor in the process) and combining it with a new six-story building next door. The warehouse portion will have 40 apartments while the new building will have another 28. There have been a lot of reasons to be critical of Katan over recent years, but he deserves some props for not tearing this place down and starting from scratch. Or not - this building and the building next door were once part of the Eberhard Faber factory. Katan tore down the two adjacent buildings and ripped the cornice off this one about two weeks before Landmarks calendared the district. The result being these buildings were not part of the historic district.

Not a bad design, but he did a fair amount of tearing down and starting from scratch.

I am sorry OT - but does anyone know what are the legal hours to do construction?
