Closing Bell: Repaving That Will Have to Be Repaved

flushing-avenue-0308.jpg
Biking past the construction work on Flushing Avenue last week, it occurred to us that the sidewalk that was being rebuilt was not being widened to accommodate the Brooklyn Greenway that is planned to run around the outside of the Navy Yard. Seems kinda silly. GMAP

On that portion of the greenway, the bike lanes will be in the Admiral's Row site, not in the roadway. It has been planned that building out that portion of the greenway would be built by the supermarket developer.

We checked with the Greenway folks and they said it would have to be widened later on...

The widening of the pavement has nothing to do with the Admirals' Row talk because it is the city's construction responsibility to maintain derelict roads. Of course, it makes sense to re-pave the pothole ridden flushing avenue like most NYC roads to attract businesses. Especially because the Navy Yard leases to the Steiner Studios. Try driving through these streets.

I LOVE the potholes!

You can drive just fine down flushing ave... what you cannot do with the potholes is race like a deadly maniac. The paving of flushing ave further down has led to it being an unsave speedway which has taken the lives of several bicyclists and motorcyclists.

Every day on the well paved park of Flushing ave I see folks crossing the double yellow to pass or passing on the right.

Keep the potholes! Flushing ave is NOT a BQE alternative!

Try driving though these streets indeed.

4:57 I hope your wear your helmet while riding your bike or driving your jalopy. Because those maniac driver friends of your will be the one to put you in the Brooklyn Hospital.

Stoner,

That's not how I've understood the plan in my conversations with the Greenway folks, but maybe I misunderstood.
