HarborSealinRedHook2.jpg
A harbor seal made an "unusual" appearance on the rocks in the Harbor in Red Hook yesterday. Per this video, "Let's hope this seal doesn't make a wrong turn into the Gowanus Canal."

There's been a bunch of seals in the bay recently—the herring have schooled and the seals followed them in...basically need a boat to see them though.

are you sure that's not that possum from below...

Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 4:21 PM

The seal heard that Gowanus is better than Park Slope, and wants to be near the area.

global warming. the animals are confused.

Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 4:27 PM

if this was on lost city they'd call it a rat

Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 4:32 PM

Is it possible to set this up so the video doesn't play every time the page is opened? e.g.: every time I go from a thread back to the main page. Thanks.

I second g man's comment. The "autoplay" is incredibly annoying.

Posted by: johnife at March 11, 2008 4:42 PM

Yes, please shut it off...it's hard to convince others I'm working when this thing doesn't shut up. I was really enjoying my The What-free day until this.

if that seal was in carroll gardens it'd be worth twice as much.....

(sorry, couldn't help myself....)

Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 4:50 PM

HILARIOUS, 4:50!!

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 11, 2008 4:52 PM

Just 185 more posts and we'll be tied with the ridiculous Park Slope vs. Fort Greene and the rest of the world debate. Come on people!

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 11, 2008 4:53 PM

This seal wouldn't last a day in Fort Greene.

Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 5:04 PM

Apparently the seal bought those rocks in 1993 for $250K and sold them in January 2007 for $3 million.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 11, 2008 5:08 PM

he wouldn't last a day because he would realize rather quickly that he picked the wrong neighborhood...

Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 5:09 PM

$3M for those rocks -- i don't think so -- did you see the layout?

Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 5:15 PM

Kill the autoplay please

Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 5:16 PM

5:16 it's true. While the layout may leave something to be desired, apparently it's in a good herring school zone.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 11, 2008 5:23 PM

Autoplay. Making. Me. Crazy. Must. Stop. Please.

Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 5:31 PM

Turn the sound down.

Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 5:56 PM

Hey Brownie!!! Next time let me "CLICK" on the damnned video to view instead of auto starting. Now I wish the seal was dead.....

Posted by: BIGD_at_BKNY at March 11, 2008 6:00 PM

click the spaeaker icon on the lower right hand side of the video and the audio portion mercifully stops!

Posted by: bren at March 11, 2008 6:18 PM

OK, we've silenced it!

Posted by: gabby_w at March 11, 2008 6:57 PM

Seal. it's what's for dinner.

Posted by: guest at March 11, 2008 7:51 PM

"global warming. the animals are confused."

Actually, Harbor seals were very common in our area as earlier as 50 years ago. They are still ocassionally seen in the area and I even remeber seeing several in LI Sound when I was a kid, only 10-15 years ago.

Also - Since these are cold water animals, wouldnt that be the opposite of global warming for them to be this far south?
