Closing Bell: Carroll Gardens Combats Circular Dumpings
We've noticed more and more "No Flyer" signs popping up outside of houses in Carroll Gardens. Assemblywoman Joan Millman's office has been distributing the signs for free after Millman pushed a bill through the Assembly that gives the city the power to enforce violations on the unsolicited circular deposits on homes. Has anyone given these signs a spin? They working?

Of course such a sign is an even worse eye-sore than the few menus that disturb them . . .

We have used one for 2 months, it helps. We have definitely had a reduction.

4:06 is right. I'd rather have the menus , circulars, etc.. rather than that ugly sign. Do the circulars, etc.. really hurt.

That sign didn't work for me. I watched as a women pushing a shopping cart full of flyers stopped in front of the sign and tossed the bundle of flyers onto my porch. When I asked her if she saw the sign, she shook her head and said "No English"!

We've had a reduction also, the people with the bags of flyers stopped coming when I called the number on the bag.

I would never put that sign up on my nice iron fence. Maybe if I lived in a Fedders house it wouldn't make a difference!!!
Just pick up the damn menus or flyers when you come home and throw them in the trash. The sign doesn't prevent the other litter that is dropped on the sidewalk from time to time. People that rant and rave about the menu/flyer issue ought to funnel their energy elsewhere.

It is not only a trash issue. No flyers!!!!! Save some trees.

No one is ranting. It's a huge waste of paper, messy and annoying, and signs sometimes discourage it.

That particular sign is an eyesore; I would go for something more subtle in black and white. Regardless, I can't stand coming home to Papa John's menus (if they left a thousand menus in a thousand days on my stoop, I wouldn't eat that crap) and all kinds of other unsolicited junk. It's a total waste of paper and it's obnoxious to throw this crap all over the front of private homes.
I love the new bill and wouldn't hesitate to report those who ignore my sign.

Papa John's is the worst offender in my neighborhood too (Cobble Hill).
I don't mind the local places so much because it gives me the chance to try a new restaurant now and then. But I still don't understand why it isn't considered littering.

5:05, good point re: new local places. Most probably don't have the resources to get word out there any other way. I would give them a pass too for ignoring my handy dandy sign, unless they made a habit of it. But I would still prefer to have none as it doesn't take long for me to walk by and notice new restaurants within a mile or two radius of my home.

The Boerum Hill Association created this sign. Yes, it's very yellow, but it's also pretty small and, methinks, fairly unobtrusive. Neighbors who use it report that it's pretty effective.

Just a thought? How about just an obsessive thought that we've heard about 40 times this week and would you give up already? You are not reflecting well on the gray people!

Regardless of what's printed on these signs, they actually read as "I'm Cranky, hurumph."
Good luck enforcing that bill.
Time to sue the local locksmith, eh?

What do you recommend from Papa John's? I haven't got that menu - only Domino's

The signs that the Park Slope Civil Council gave out are similar, though mostly in red and therefore (I think) a touch less garish. They seem to work somewhat, and they pose enough of a threat that apparently someone has been removing the signs - 14th St. has been having this problem, according to a block meeting announcement taped to a tree.

thanks brownstoner for sharing this. I have seen these signs but didn't know how to get one . Now I know!

All the city needs to do is make a law and enforce it. The same people who have been happy to write me a ticket for some garbage that blew in front of my house can observe the flyers on the stoops and write a ticket to the business which printed it up.

the question was: Are they working? and yes they are!
Posted by: guest at March 28, 2008 7:58 AM
It's interesting how they've caught on in some areas and not others. In Brooklyn Heights, they are prevalent on Garden Place, but much less common on other streets. Peer pressure? I'm all for the signs and an end to unsolicited junk mail.
If I could only figure out how to stop the daily Chase and Citi credit card applications. Any suggestions (other than declare bankruptcy and blow my credit rating - which would probably just result in me being inundated with bankruptcy lawyer flyers)?

8:39 why don't you sign in as someone other than guest???? stop posting this.

Biff Champion,
you can opt out of the credit card offers at: https://www.optoutprescreen.com/?rf=t
For catalogs, you can use catalogchoice.org and just eliminate the catalogs you don't want. Come on, does anyone really buy anything from the Newport News catalog?
Posted by: guest at March 28, 2008 10:11 AM
Thanks 10:11, that's very helpful! (Chuckling at the Newport News catalog). I don't mind the catalogs since I receive them far less frequently; although I imagine the mail delivery person probably can't stand them.
I thought I opted out of the telemarketing calls too but still seem to get the occasional one.

I actually started an online petition (for environmental reasons mostly). The councilwoman told me that when I get enough signatures she will send it with a letter to the stores that distribute these circulars.
Anyone want to help out and sign?
