StreetLevel: Smith Street EVill Spinoffs Come to 5th Ave.

new-to-fifth-ave-02-2008.jpg
The 5th Avenue retail gods sometimes taketh away, but they sure as hell giveth a whole lot. Coming soon: Video Free Brooklyn, the Smith Street video rental store, is opening in the former Romp storefront near Douglass. Sure, the big Hollywood further up 5th just closed down, but it seems like smaller rental stores with interesting stock (we're thinking of Get Reel in particular) do decent business. Video Free Brooklyn II should open within a couple of weeks. Farther south down the avenue, meanwhile, another sequel is on the way: Pink Olive, the East Village baby/gift boutique, is coming to the former Posey Baker space near Lincoln. 5th Avenue's newest addition will officially open its doors this Saturday. I've got to say it takes some guts to open a video rental place in the era of Netflix and iTunes movie rentals etc. Still I wish them well.

5th ave is becoming more like smith street everyday. You go 5th Ave!

Posted by: guest at February 29, 2008 2:54 PM

smith street is becoming more like 5th avenue 15 years ago.

go smith!

I'm super excited about all the new stuff on 5th. Seems we are having a renaissance...getting rid of the more useless older stuff in favor of newer, more interesting shops. Even this new kids store is better than romp, which has now closed.

Anyone know where on 5th the new Mario Batali restaurant is opening?

Can't wait for Babeland either!!!

The east village/lower east side comes to Park Dope!

Posted by: guest at February 29, 2008 3:08 PM

Rocking the Dope!

Come on you haters.....

Posted by: guest at February 29, 2008 3:10 PM

Who has confirmation re: Batali?

I thought that was just a rumor.

Posted by: guest at February 29, 2008 3:11 PM

I also heard Buffalo Exchange...the vintage shop in Williamsburg is looking to expand to a second store on 5th ave.

Would make sense...Beacons Closet seems to do a pretty healthy business...you can barely MOVE in there.

He's taking over the Biscuit spot and turning it into Batali BBQ.

Posted by: guest at February 29, 2008 3:26 PM

i'll miss posey barker.

bought some nice stuff there.

Posted by: guest at February 29, 2008 3:26 PM

seriously, 3:26?

i thought batali was looking on 7th ave.

Posted by: guest at February 29, 2008 3:43 PM

This is Batali's belly ... I'm coming to eat you up lil' Slope. Prepare thyself.

Posted by: guest at February 29, 2008 3:44 PM

There's a new Mexican joint taking the place of Tempo Presto on 7th.

Also, Yogo Monster (organic frozen yogurt) is about to open on 7th between berkeley and union.

Posted by: guest at February 29, 2008 3:51 PM

more people need to go to Celexico. Best mexican food ever.

Posted by: guest at February 29, 2008 4:19 PM

I heard that Brad Pitt and Mario Batali's secret love child is opening a masage/tea salon for stroller moms on Fifth Ave.

Yeah but back in the day at Sound Tracks on corner of 7th Ave and 9th St you could rent a movie AND buy a bag of weed. Can Video Free Brooklyn match THAT level of customer service? I think not.

Posted by: guest at February 29, 2008 4:33 PM

The people at Video Free Brooklyn are snotty and piss me off . . .they need to be more like the Stinky/Smith & Vine crew . . .

Posted by: guest at February 29, 2008 4:34 PM

..and those 2 girls at Soundtracks 7th&9th were sweeet.

Posted by: guest at February 29, 2008 4:39 PM

Calexico? Are you kidding? It's cheap, but it it's not good.

Posted by: guest at February 29, 2008 5:08 PM

Isn;t there already another video rental place ion that end of Fifth?

Why not just set your money on fire? Makes about as much sense as opening a video store in a high rent space.

What next? A typewriter repair store?

Where is the "Suck it Slopers" guy? He usually chimes in around this point in the thread.

Posted by: guest at February 29, 2008 6:20 PM

cue that crazy wife-hating lady dad who insisted the only reason to get married was for the kids. think he'll be checking marriage licenses at the door of this pink olive?

Posted by: guest at February 29, 2008 6:24 PM

i think the crazy man lady is the what.

Posted by: guest at February 29, 2008 6:31 PM

All of you Slopers are so pathetic. You are always taking the hand me downs of the Carroll Gardens / Cobble Hill area. Nothing original or interesting ever happens in Park Slope. CG rocks!!!

Its amazing how 5th ave is changing every day. Every 6 months a whole slew of cool stores open up. The constant change is very exciting. I remember the early 90's where you would see bodegas on every block. The difference between 5th and 7th was like day and night. The only change for the worst that I have seen on 5th avenue is the parking. Used to be able to find parking with little effort. Now I have to drive around for 30 minutes. Additionaly 5th avenue seems so much more alive now. Lots of young people walking around and hanging out. My sister who lives in soho came for a visit recently and stated that 7th seems like the "family block", full of mom's and 5th is the young singles exciting block. She would have chosen to live on 5th over 7th.

Does anyone have any idea how much it would cost to rent a store on 5th ave (north)? I am looking for around 1500sq ft.

Posted by: guest at March 1, 2008 10:38 AM

i love park slope too, but i wouldn't want to live ON 5th OR 7th.

that's like saying you live in soho and would rather live on broadway than west broadway.

both are nightmares and the sidestreets are more pleasant.

it's park slope. this isn't east vs. west or 5th vs. 7th. you can live anywhere in the neighborhood and be a 5 minute walk to either avenue.

some like the quiet up near to the park and ome like being near the action.

i'm young and single and much prefer being 10 steps away from the park and walk down to 5th nearly every night for dinner/drinking etc.

4th ave ftw

Posted by: Santa at March 1, 2008 9:01 PM

1500 sf will run you well into the 5 figures (per month). I know a few spaces on 7th that are 1000 sf or smaller asking around $10K a month. pretty scary. good luck.

Posted by: guest at March 2, 2008 10:45 AM

this new yogo monster place on 7th and berkeley looks amazing.

yogurt, coffee and waffles it says.

the decors is very un-park slope like.

more like east village.

super cute. says opening march 2008 so any day now.

Posted by: guest at March 2, 2008 7:02 PM

wow...10k per month for 1500sq ft on 5th ave north is a lot more then I thought. I thought it would be around 5-7k. Thanks for tip.

I am mystified that Smith Street stores are opening copies on 5th Avenue. These streets are well within walking distance! It's weird.

Posted by: guest at March 3, 2008 10:02 AM

10:02am:

Not strange at all.

Smith and 5th are two different worlds for most shoppers.

5th is close to the western border of PSlope and most shoppers there come from 8th Ave, 7th Ave, 6th Ave, etc.

The walk from 8th Ave to Smith Street is faaaaaaaaar and crossing the GowANUS is gross and uphill on the way back.

Video Free Brooklyn opened earlier this week. Space still looks a little empty but what movies they do have are pretty good titles. Can't wait to watch There Will Be Blood. Gotta love the depressing Oscar movies.
