StreetLevel: BBQ in Gowanus
A restaurant called Brick Oven Barbeque Pit is going to open in a warehouse on 3rd Avenue and 6th Street within the next month or so. The proprietors have announced the coming of the new business with the charming spray-paint job above, and one of the owners told us the Pit is also going to offer brick-oven pizza and serve booze. They should totally leave the sign up when they open.
Quality BBQ needs to be down and dirty

gowanus is going nuts over the last few months
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 2:39 PM
This is one of the most exciting new openings I've heard about in a while!!!!
Gowanus is getting so freakin cool.
Suck it bburg!
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 2:42 PM
mmmmm, meat.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 2:43 PM
What wonderful industries were in this building before a restaurant came under consideration?
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 2:44 PM
Yet another reason I'm thrilled to live in Park Slope.
Come spring, wandering down to this place on a nice warm day is going to be HEAVEN!!!
Can't think of a better Saturday than starting the morning out at the Greenmarket, spending the day in Prospect Park and heading down here around 5 for some beer and BBQ!
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 2:44 PM
Awesome - slow cooked PCB laced meats!!!!!!
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 2:46 PM
Gowanus really has diversity that other neighborhoods lack. Here, you can get PCB-laced veggies at Whole Foods -OR- PCB-laced meat at the Smoking BBQ joint.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 3:01 PM
Yes, enjoy some BBQ before Uhaul rips you off.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 3:02 PM
2:44- Is it better than when you spend the day smiling at the pleasing smell of your own farts? You're the reason that people all around the world hate Park Slopers.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 3:13 PM
BBQ will have no flavor once AY is built
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 3:15 PM
"You're the reason that people all around the world hate Park Slopers."
is that why they named it one of the top 10 neighborhoods in the country?
just curious.
don't be jealous. it's not petty on you...oops...i meant pretty.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 3:17 PM
3:13, you should smell them after eating PCB-laced barbeque. Swe-e-e-e-et!
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 3:26 PM
I live in park slope and you're a joke 3:17. If you're same guy in 2:44- then even worse. You're the reason people hate park slope. It's a nice place to live, but people like you are annoying. This restaurant is in Gowanus. Walk wherever you want. Take your stroller or your greenmarket bag with you, enjoy your day, but please keep it to yourself.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 3:28 PM
Why 3:28?
Because you've added so many nice comments to this thread??
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 3:33 PM
Thank you 3:28 - whether it's one person or a handful, the Park Slopers on this blog are just too much with their incessant harping about how fabulous their neighborhood is.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 3:34 PM
I'll tell ya the thought of all that BBQ. Well It makes me Hard!
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 3:44 PM
I could handle the Park Slopers' incessant bleating about how their neighborhood is better than [INSERT OTHER BKLYN NEIGHBORHOOD], but the continued reliance on that inane "Top 10 Neighborhood in the USA" press release is just too much.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 3:45 PM
as someone who has lived in park slope for a year I really dont get why some park slope residence get so uppidty about the neighborhood. Its great and I love living here but I also love pretty much all the neighborhoods in brooklyn.
and bbq is great and Pies&Thighs was too far away. Im also glad to see stuff other than lowes open up in gowanus.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 3:47 PM
If Park Slopers were constantly bragging about how wonderful their neighborhood was *and it weren't true*, nobody would bother hating them for it.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 3:48 PM
3:45 - you're right - if the authors of that study knew how much of a headache it would prove to be for the denizens of brownstoner, they would have thought twice before releasing it. However, I suspect it is the same person who brings it up on every possible thread.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 3:51 PM
I've seen the floorplan of this joint. I love the blueprint for the bathroom: after gorging on all the BBQ, you just squat on a hole that empties into the Gowanus.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 3:54 PM
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ANUS
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 3:56 PM
Gowanus BAR-B-POO
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 3:59 PM
maybe its the person who wrote the article
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:00 PM
This is kind of a skecthy location, and area.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:03 PM
this is exactly 3 blocks from the new soon-to-be-built whole foods.
hopefully.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:08 PM
The only reason Park Slopers are so defensive is because they are usually be idiotically attacked from every angle.
If it isn't the stupid stroller debate, it's about drinking at union hall.
If that happened in Queens, no one would EVER mention such a thing, much less print it on curbed.com
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:13 PM
3:45 and co: I'new to this forum, but I still don't understand why someone would get so annoyed about other people loving the neighbourhood they live in? Or going to the greemarket? Having grown up in Central Europe and being used to shopping for food at outdoor markets, I don't understand why many Americans would have a problem with it
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:13 PM
4:13 nobody here likes outdoor shoppers or greenmarkets--imply healthy, progressive urban lifestyles that reek or haughtiness and self-righteousness with a liberal taint.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:18 PM
4:18 Ah yess...I understand now.. I thought only people from the backwoods of red states (i know a stereotype) would have a problem with such things. People here prefer Walmart etc?
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:23 PM
My taint is totally liberal. That's the way that central eurpean taints are. We fan them and rub them at our greenmarkets. Central Europs is like park slope, but with better taints.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:27 PM
people who eat healty, attended college, enjoy music and art and do not live in a single location for their entire lives are either yuppies or hipsters. Bpth of these groups are hated by many people and for some reason hate each other as well as others within their own group
its all very confusing.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:27 PM
They just need to rub taints, and then they'll all like each other again.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:30 PM
tell me more about this place park slope you all speak of?
it sounds lovely.
- newcomer from europe
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:30 PM
i have lived in two of the neighborhoods on the top 10. park slope and west austin. i hate to break it to my current neighbors, but park slope can't hold a candle to austin or to its bbq. but since they aren't moving wall st. to texas, i will reluctantly stay in park slope... this bbq better not suck. can't stand that pig place on 5th.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:33 PM
Essentially people are projecting and simply hate themselves. That's why you find so many snarky cynical haters on forums such as Brownstoner.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:33 PM
i'll agree that austin is nice, but there is no way on god's green earth that i would ever live in texas.
it's really too bad.
for now, yes...park slope will have to do.
i liken park slope to a runway model at mercedes benz fashion week:
people like to hate pretty things
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:39 PM
where is the 10 ten list at?
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:40 PM

Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:41 PM
but people dont hate brooklyn heights and its prettier.
oh wait people do hate brooklyn heights
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:42 PM
I live in P.S. and frankly I think it sucks - 95% of the women are ugly, wear horrible clothes and/or are lesbians; there is too much crime, dirt and graffiti here in (lower) slope. The trains (R, M & F) are ridiculously slow and the stores are generally these granola B.S. lifestyle stores with nothing 'real' for sale - except for the clothes stores which sell the heretofore mentioned ugly clothes.
The restaurants are good and the housing stock is nice however.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:43 PM
most of those places are pretty lame.
I wouldnt get to uppity about that list
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:45 PM
4:43....
someone earlier said something about people on this thread hating themselves.
you embody that 100%.
anyone who lives in a neighborhood they think sucks is pretty miserable, bitter and frankly stupid.
and don't tell me it's because it's all you can afford, because we all know how expensive park slope is.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:47 PM
Biscuit sucks, 4:33, you're right. But I'm going to have to plop the asshat on you for declaring "West Austin" superior to the slope. Give me another reason besides the q.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:47 PM
4:47---the weather is much better (love the heat), women are hotter and obviously affordability--you can get a 2000 sq foot home for the $ of a crappy 600 sq foot hole in PS
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:50 PM
I'm excited for this place, personally, PCBs or no PCBs. When me and my ladyfriend first moved to Brooklyn 11 years ago, I used to get her dander up by predicting that one day Gowanus would be THE neighborhood. I envisioned little ricky ticky bars lining the canal, with their little lanterns glowing, etc. This Q joint is the first step in that direction. Who's laughing NOW, ladyfriend? WHO'S LAUGHING NOW??????!!!!
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:51 PM
biscuit suuuuuucks
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:51 PM
4:50...one thing you are forgetting...is Austin 20 minutes from one of the greatest cities in the world????!!
if you can't find a hot chick in this city, you aren't going to find one anywhere.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:52 PM
Okay, 4:50, if you love the heat--I'll give you a pass... because Texas is UNBEARABLY hot and I don't know why anyone would ever live there year round. As for cheap space... it's an old line, but what good is 2000 square feet when you walk out the door and you're in TEXAS?
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:52 PM
4:52 here again. sorry i know i'm going to be beaten up for this...i'm not suggesting BROOKLYN isn't a part of the best city in the world, but you know what i mean...
seriously though. you can't really compare. sure...in austin you have a nice house and a nice little community but we are pretty lucky to have this nice little bucolic urban enclave just a few subway stops away from all the hustle and bustle of manhattan.
people all over the world want to come and live here.
not quite the same situation in texas where they are now having a hard time GIVING away houses outside of maybe dallas and houston.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:55 PM
4:47 - I dont hate myself - I think I'm wonderful but my neighborhood (P.S.) stinks. BUT I have an amazing and HUGE apartment with parking and tons of outdoor space and its in P.S. 321 for my kids. and so yes I can not afford to move b/c withing the neighborhoods I like more, it is either impossible to find anything comparable or it is too expensive.
Wherever you move is a trade-off of factors (unless you are a Billionaire) and that's the trade-off I made. I am sorry my honesty threatens you in some way, but I see no reason not to call things as I see it - and as a 'neighborhood' - I think P.S. is way overrated.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:56 PM
ANYONE WHO SAYS THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD 95% SUCKS DOESN'T DESERVE TO LIVE THERE!
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:57 PM
4:33 here. they are both great places to live. summers suck in austin and winters suck in brooklyn. would agree about the women though. also, austin truly embodies the laid back "slacker" spirit (check out the movie to see what i mean but not the movie "slackerS"). park slope gets an A for effort, but everyone has to work like dogs to afford it, so not much time for anything else. a lot of austin-ites in brooklyn these days, so there must be something in common.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:57 PM
4:52 I was referring to PS women. BIG difference...Agreed that Manhattan women are lovely and you can't beat the sheer numbers of 'em.
But you're not walking out your door into Lubbock or Dallas...Austin is a vibrant city with culture, lots of lakes (Lake Travis--ok dam created but still counts) bands and bars. Nicer people too. No snark.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:59 PM
4:57....judging by this website, i'd say it looks like park slopers NEVER work!!!
here's the thing about the women...you say AUSTIN has hot chicks...not just west austin.
well...park slope might not have the hottest chicks, but NEW YORK CITY DOES!!!
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 4:59 PM
Hey, 4:56, 321 is overrated, too. So don't stay here for that.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 5:00 PM
4:55 - check the latest job growth figures. austin is #1 in the nation right now. beating vegas, atlanta and florida and definitely new york. also, old west austin isn't exactly cheap. around $1mn starting for a nice place. just saying...
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 5:00 PM
so who's behind this joint?
Its got Alan Harding all over it.
An expansion of Gowanus Yacht Club?
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 5:02 PM
well if ps. 321 is overrated, there's always ps. 39.
two excellent schools in one hood ain't too shabby.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 5:04 PM
I think the PS hater only staying here for the kids (btw, they are only in elementary school for 5 years, so that seems idiotic) is the CRAZY MAN LADY!!!!!!
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 5:05 PM
Anyone who can afford to pay their rent or mortgage DESERVES to live wherever they damn well want and think and say anything they want about it.
Why does it bother you so much that someone who lives in P.S. thinks it stinks???? Its just one persons opinion.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 5:08 PM
Who is Crazy Man Lady?
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 5:11 PM
Crazy Man Lady...see thread from two days ago about Body Essentials on 5th becoming a Barber and Romp becoming a dvd rental store...
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 5:12 PM
5:11 - huh?
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 5:13 PM
4:51: I remember thinking the same the first time I went to Gowanus...with cute bars lining the canal etc. However the few times I went there after, the canal smelled really gross! Is this always the case? I haven't been there for a while.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 5:14 PM
Suck it, Biscuit!
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 5:17 PM
I am not a crazy man lady but I am sorry - I think P.S. as a neighborhood - sucks (except for the restaurants) but I love my place so I'm staying for now - but I am not such a loser or a shill that I can;t be honest about where I live.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 5:17 PM
Sounds like it's time for snacks. Boneless riblets and frosty mugs of Rheingold for everyone!
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 5:18 PM
interesting new data:
Over the past year, condo inventory levels have exceeded co-op levels as new developments (nearly all condo) continue to enter the housing stock at a steady clip. Residential development permits dropped sharply in 2007 and the expiration of the 421a abatement program on June 30th may choke off the high level of supply entering the market in 2009. So far, the elevated level of demand has kept inventory at modest to low levels.
The total number of listings has increased 9.9% from the end of December 2007 to the End of January 2008 (yesterday). Inventory tends to rise at the beginning of the year as sellers anticipate the upcoming spring market. The same period in four of the past five years has seen an increase in the number of listings:
1 Month Change (Dec-Jan)
2003, +2.3%
2004, -10.8%
2005, +16.9%
2006, +4.2%
2007, +9.9%
Clearly condo inventory is higher than it was two years ago, but co-ops are near the six-year monthly low since I began to capture this data. In fact, co-ops are 39.9% below their high in March 2003 (Just as the Iraq War broke out) and condos are 23.5% below their recent high in September 2006. Currently, overall inventory is consistent with levels seen in 2002/2003, which is contrarian to the increase seen in many metro area markets around the country at this time.

I haven't taken a good whiff in a while, 5:14, but it IS improving--hell, it can sustain life! If they want to clean it they CAN. I'll meet you at "Lamar's Canalside Crabshack" in five years for some crablegs and beer!

Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 5:29 PM
Suck it, 5:19
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 5:29 PM
Anyone who thinks Texas chicks are better looking than NY women is out of their mind... buncha fake blonde fake titty bimbos down there. Mostly dumb to boot.
Posted by: denton at February 1, 2008 5:30 PM
5:29 = self hating fratboy now posing as hupster.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 5:34 PM
Who is crazy man lady?!
A nut ball who was assummed to be a woman - but was later discovered to be a man. He ranted about how the only reason to be married was to procreate. (s)he had a lot of other odd ideas about why people who do not plan to procreate should not get married.
(S)he had a prolonged fight with some gay people.
I beleive (s)he, like Rip Van Winkle, has been asleep for many years, awoke in front of a computer with brownstoner already open and began sharing his/her rather dated ideas.
Any other questions?
Do you know who The What is?
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 5:48 PM
just checked and crazymanlady.com IS available!
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 6:01 PM
5:29 = fratboy moves to the big city.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 6:09 PM
mmmm....i love fratboys....
any gay ones in park slope??
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 6:10 PM
5:34 is your man.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 6:12 PM
Current figures say 17, 6:10.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 6:12 PM
6:12 is already too busy with the old queens down at the wrinkle room.
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 6:42 PM
oh, hello 6:42! we've been waiting for you at the wrinkle room!
Posted by: guest at February 1, 2008 8:35 PM
Let's get back to the issue at hand. Do they use sauce or rub??? Let's see what this hotly (no pun intended) debated social topic brings in the way of incessant, largely idiotic, immature responses!!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 2, 2008 9:55 AM
you dont really cook bbq in a brick oven.
and hopefully its mostly pork
Posted by: Santa at February 2, 2008 10:01 AM
Agree with both 10:01
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 2, 2008 10:15 AM
I wondered why the "brick oven" was being touted as well. I'm on board with mostly pork, though I'm a sucker for brisket...
Posted by: guest at February 2, 2008 10:41 AM
You know, this thread has convinced me that an employee at Brownstoner is under orders to insert and defend a "Park Slope is the best" comment on pretty much every thread in an effort to increase the comments count. Otherwise, there is no way to explain how a thread on freakin BBQ in the Gowanus degenerates into a Slope hate fest.
Posted by: guest at February 2, 2008 12:01 PM
To further clarify, 2:44 reads like a totally fake post. So it's either a troll or someone at Brownstoner.
Posted by: guest at February 2, 2008 12:04 PM
"Do they use sauce or rub???"
I see we are back to talking about the gay fratboys.
Posted by: guest at February 2, 2008 12:08 PM
so if you like park slope you are either a troll or work at brownstoner?
is that the case also for nearly every thread where someone feels the need to say that homes in carroll gardens should cost 50 million dollars?
i believe you live with blinders on. there are people on this blog who defend and say great things about all the neighborhoods.
i can specifically think of a person who comes on and talks up williamsburg like it's eden.
if i lived in park slope, i'd be pretty proud of it too. it's a nice place.
Posted by: guest at February 2, 2008 12:12 PM
all you people are distressingly depressing. a piece about a bbq joint explodes into the same old neighborhood battles. just shut up. everyone has their own perspective. i wouldn't want to live next t o any of you since you have too much time on your hands to engage in this nonsense. why don't you all go for a walk instead?
Posted by: guest at February 2, 2008 12:21 PM
i agree 12:21. They're pathetic.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 2, 2008 12:44 PM
How is calling other people on this blog pathetic less pathetic than calling neighborhoods pathetic?
Posted by: guest at February 2, 2008 12:57 PM
i agree 12:57. daveinbdedstuy has had time to post three times today. get a life, dave!
Posted by: guest at February 2, 2008 1:50 PM
So much ill will . . . at least that douchebag Polemicist isn't here.
Posted by: guest at February 2, 2008 4:43 PM
And whither The What?

I'm really worried about The What. It's been too long.
Posted by: guest at February 3, 2008 12:04 AM
I think it's possible that when the Fed cut interest rates 3/4 of a point he spontaneously combusted. Either that, or decamped for his tax refuge in Maldives to live out his life, laughing at all us asshats and fucktards.
Posted by: guest at February 3, 2008 8:17 AM
Hey! I just noticed that- what in God's name is "Brick Oven BBQ"? Gives me pause.
I have to agree, PS is full of generally unattractive women in gardening clogs. It blows my mind sometimes that we're a stone's throw from Manhattan where every woman is more beautiful then the next, yet the women here carry themselves like hordes of crazy cat ladies. That's not, BTW, exclusive to PS.
Posted by: guest at February 4, 2008 10:39 AM
10:39 is generally someone who speaks out of his rectum.
Posted by: guest at February 4, 2008 12:16 PM
I think 10:32 is a rectum.
Posted by: guest at February 4, 2008 2:50 PM
First matter at hand: BBQ -
I really am amped about a new BBQ joint in the hood, because, lets face it - the existing ones blow! Hopefully this puppy will be up and running in time for the summer.
With that said.... they also need to clean up the nasty Gowanus ASAP, also in time for the summer so you can't get a whiff of the sewage fest everytime the wind blows.
Also, if this is indded an Alan Harding venture, eh....I would be very dissapointed. Sure the man has great ideas, but they're not executed to their best. His food sucks!
Second matter at hand - I moved from PS to CG. I do have to agree that the women are hideous and ratty looking. Jesus Christ, I realized they're way too damn literally and hippylike, but take care of yourselves ladies!
The men hoever are attractive, but too mad I'll never have a shot at any of em since I don't have a d!ck in my pants.
I really do love Brooklyn, but I wish it weren't so god damn liberal. I can't stand the steady influx od hipsters. Ok, I am done ranting on that note.
Last matter at hand - if there are any hot hot single STRAIGHT men thats more of the wall st type than the not having a job type...holler! i need more like minded friends in the hood!
Posted by: guest at February 4, 2008 3:04 PM
