StreetLevel: Bank Signs on for Old Supermarket Space

former-dag-new-bank-7th-ave-02-2008.JPG
This morning the Brooklyn Eagle confirmed long-held rumors about the big new tenant at the former D’Agostino’s on 7th Avenue and 6th Street in the Slope: It’s another bank. The unidentified bank (Gowanus Lounge sources believe it’s going to be a Bank of America) will share the 4,500-square-foot space with a smaller, TBD tenant, according to landlord Larry Wittlin. "I wouldn't want another, simply one of those corner everything-type stores,” says Wittlin. “I want something more upscale. Something that would fit in here or in Brooklyn Heights or in the city."

Unbelievable! The nation's in financial meltdown and STILL these bastards have enough ill-gotten gains to saturate our neighborhoods with their soul-less presence.

I walked by last week- late in the afternoon. They were tearing the facace and glass off this thing with no protection for the pedestrians on the street. There was stuff flying everywhere.

Is this really going to be another bank? I was under the impression that banks were stopping the major branch expansion because of cash shortages. I know that Citibank put the kibosh on their US expansion plan.

I know banks are less than ideal, but at least it brings more local jobs to the neighborhood and adds to the tax base - Probably more so than some Yoga studio or granola store.

well, hell, i need a job. maybe i should work at one of the banks here!

I don't love banks, but I also don't love idiots who think the economy isn't (still)good. Well, I guess somewhat cast all those primary votes for Obama and Hillary....yawn.

What is a "corner everything-type" store? Could such a store even afford the rent?

Posted by: guest at February 12, 2008 3:07 PM

banks are the new chinese food restaurant

Gourmet Garage or Garden of Eatin' WHERE ARE YOU??????

The info on GL doesn't sounds quite right. It says a bank (Bank of America) is going into the former D'Ag space and that the Gothic Cabinet space was still looking for a tenant. Judging from the plywood up, it looks like the exact opposite to me.

Just so you all know...Park Slope is actually NOT saturated with banks. ONE Commerce on 5th, One Chase on 5th and one on 7th, two Bank of America ATM only's on 7th...one at Union and one at 12th street and an Astoria Federal on each 5th and 7th.

For a very long neighborhood which spans a couple miles from end to end, this is NOT a lot of banks.

I have to walk 20 mins from my house to my Commerce. I'd WELCOME another nearer to Flatbush/7th.

Don't cry wolf.

Other neighborhoods have such worse bank and duane reade problems than we do.

Sounds like such a cozy and reality-free planet that BrooklynCouch inhabits.

its a bank of america I saw the plans the other day in front of the windows with their logo

Is there even a full service Bank of America anywhere in Park Slope?

Can't think of one? Just those ATM only places.

Posted by: guest at February 12, 2008 4:23 PM

Well if that's true, my walk to the bank got MUCH shorter!

Count me as the minority happy poster!

Posted by: boundsk2 at February 12, 2008 4:57 PM

How often does anyone need to actually step in a bank these days? Haven't you heard of direct deposit and ATMs? What a waste of space in a stretch of 7th that already has nothing decent to offer.

I need a Commerce Bank to turn my coins into folding money. Spare change? Anybody?

Posted by: guest at February 12, 2008 6:05 PM

How about a COFFEE SHOP!

Posted by: guest at February 12, 2008 6:19 PM

Uh, there's Tea Lounge two blocks away.

Posted by: guest at February 12, 2008 7:48 PM

Everyone bitched and moaned about D'ag. Now everyone is bitching and moaning about Bank of America.

Honestly you people will find something to bitch about no matter WHAT, so who cares?

7th Avenue is miles and miles long. There are plenty of other spaces (now about 10 opening up near 2nd street) for 16 more Tea Lounges, 12 more Yoga studios and an Organic Vegan Day Spa open only on Buddhist holidays.

Lord. I wonder if everyone in the 70's complained as much as you all do that all of 7th were delis and all of 5th was a burned out hellhole.

"Honestly you people will find something to bitch about no matter WHAT, so who cares?"

Indeed. I bet people will even complain about other people complaining!!!!!!!

Posted by: guest at February 12, 2008 8:22 PM

Hey, 8:22, the last thing this thread needs is someone complaining about the complainers who complain about the complainers. But I'm not complaining. Just sayin'!

How about a deli?

Posted by: guest at February 13, 2008 10:16 AM

Gay bar.

Posted by: guest at February 13, 2008 11:02 AM

Second a gay bar!

Posted by: guest at February 13, 2008 11:10 AM

How about a WalMart! Brooklyn needs one of them!

Posted by: guest at February 13, 2008 1:42 PM

I agree on a Walmart. It's a one stop center to collect and buy anything you want. And if it comes with a deli, they have excellent rolls etc.

Posted by: guest at February 14, 2008 7:37 AM

I live around the corner, BOA is my bank, but I'm still not too thrilled. I'd rather have something different and cool than a bank...I can walk three blocks to 9th street if I need money from their ATM...why does such a huge space have to be turned into something so boring?
