Marty Talks Growth, New Projects

marty-02-2008.jpgMarty Markowitz’s final state of the borough address in Red Hook last night was apparently chock full of the boosterism that everyone expects from Brooklyn’s cheerleader, but the borough president also mentioned a few interesting new initiatives he intends to push for during his last year in office. A video monitor projected images of the beep showering at Hotel Le Bleu (yum!), according to the Daily News, as Markowitz noted that tourism to the borough rose 10 percent in 2006 (there's some fresh data for you!) and is primed to rise more over the coming years. Marty said that he wants to establish a board of directors to take over the New York Aquarium in Coney Island (the facility is currently run by the nonprofit Wildlife Conservation Society); provide funding for a GLBT community center in Downtown; and push for the restoration of Coney Island’s parachute jump. Although the borough president received a standing ovation and a lot of support from the crowd, Atlantic Yards Report’s Norman Oder notes that Markowitz only mentioned the borough’s biggest development project twice over the course of his 70-minute speech, and it didn’t elicit applause either time.

I love Marty! His enthusiasm and cheery outlook are contagious. Usually I'm for term limits, but in his case I wish that he could stay in office forever.

No worries that AY didn't get applause (if Norman Oder can be believed, that is). There'll be plenty of time for that at Nets games.

GBLT?

thanks for noticing, 9:28--glbt, of course!

It is surely a sign that the Anti-AY crowd is down to their last breaths if they are counting the AY applause lines in Marty's speeches.

So, in a small sample, we've determined that if you are enthusiastic and cheery while picking people's pockets, some folks will look the other way.

Hey, Gabby W., do you know anything more about the GLBT community center? Last I heard, this was all tangled up with extraneous (or not) issues.

I can stand a 70-minute speech, but not preceded by 75 minutes of introductions. And I always feel bad walking out on the performers, but after you've been there over three hours, including the reception, it's just time to go. Marty is a lame duck, so I blew off this year's speech; he can't punish me any more. Oh, that's right 9:25, Marty isn't so nice behind closed doors.

Turns out that the alleged $4 billion in tax revenue AY was supposed to generate (used to justify the $2 billion NY taxpayers are giving Ratner) wasn't in fact an audited number devised by the state. It was a number essentially made up by Ratner's PR team.

Marty's a crook. he sold us down a river of debt, congestion and pollution. Waving and smiling at the occasional parade doesn't get him off the hook.

And cheering for the Nets? We're paying $2 billion to move Ratners basketball team over the river and build them a stadium. It would have cost us 25% of what we're paying to buy the damn team outright.

Agreed 9:46 - I've been on the receiving end of a few not so nice emails from Marty in response to some of my questions on Atlantic Yards and his relationship with the Ratners. I am not a fan and can't wait until his departure - for good. He is a thief and it is a shame that we have wasted good years with him in office. What we could have accomplished with a professional, fair and civic minded leader.

Amazes me that all the venom the anti-AY spews is toward Markowitz. He may have been a cheerleader but boro pres is too powerless a position to say he 'sold us down a river '-Boro pres can't approve squat and can't sign squat -
that would take Albany and Bloomberg - but somehow Bloomberg still comes out smelling like roses. Or anti-AY is too afraid of Bloomie.

10:09, I second 10:09's statement.
Don't give the BP so much credit for making this project happen - even his corrupt appointee had to recuse herself on planning commission votes! Marty couldn't have stopped this even if he wanted too.

Posted by: guest at February 8, 2008 10:25 AM

Just for the record, I didn't (need to) mention Atlantic Yards -- 9:46

Posted by: guest at February 8, 2008 10:30 AM

Final state of the borough address?

Unless the BP is on a different schedule, he's not term limited until the '09 elections. Which means one extra year of Marty, and one more (2009) state of the borough address.

(And I'll sign on with the love Marty camp - he has made the BP a relevant position by virtue of his cheerleading. And behind all of that cheerleading is some effective policy making.)

For those wondering whether my account of no applause can be believed, well, I taped Marty's speech, and it was broadcast on BCAT.

I was at Marty's speech and I didnt applaud b/c AY isnt tall enough or dense enough.

Posted by: guest at February 8, 2008 11:10 AM

I didn't see the BCAT broadcast, so when will it be aired? Either way, I think that an alleged lack of applause means nothing, as 9:40's comment astutely notes:

"It is surely a sign that the Anti-AY crowd is down to their last breaths if they are counting the AY applause lines in Marty's speeches."

Posted by: guest at February 8, 2008 11:23 AM

Perhaps the "images of the beep showering at Hotel Le Bleu" stunned the crowd into silence. Or convulsions.

Posted by: guest at February 8, 2008 11:36 AM

To all Friends of Marty - If our BP acted in a professional, non-corrupt and fair way (and I notice that no one disputed that part of my commentary) we would not be in the position we are today. A mad and wasteful project (AY) in our midst. I did not mention Bloomberg, Pataki or any other "friend of Ratner" (Yassky anyone) as this post is on Marty. His backroom ways contributed to this mess. Stop with the platitudes. They are not deserved.

What done deal is AY?? Even the Ratner people themselves are saying they lied and big time! How credible is AY? Not at all.

Posted by: guest at February 8, 2008 4:01 PM

AY is an illusion.

There was a long article in THE NEW YORKER about 2 years ago that very clearly spelt out Markowitz's role in AY. While it's self-evident his office comes with little official power, he has tremendous access to the real NYC power brokers. And it was he who made the marriage between Ratner, Pataki and Bloomberg -- literally hounding Bruce Ratner to pursue AY after Ratner kept insisting he wasn't interested in owning a sports franchise.

It is LGBT. Hhhh...really not "GLBT" which sounds short of Good Lettuce Bacon 'n' Tomato...

Posted by: guest at February 8, 2008 6:58 PM

Markowitz is a clown. I can't wait to vote against him, whatever office he next has his eye on. Let's not forget, he's lined his war chest with developer money. If he runs for mayor, I'll actively work against him.
