DOB Beefs Up Safety Standards
Yesterday the Department of Buildings announced that it’s going to implement a raft of new enforcement tactics “to disrupt the business models of those who intentionally or carelessly put the public and workers at risk by defying the Building Code or Zoning Resolution,” according to DOB Commissioner Patricia Lancaster. The department is going to devote $1 million and 21 staff lines to the initiatives, which include cracking down on after-hours work (hey, does this count?), unsafe interior demolitions, and setting up a Professional Certifications Qualifications Group to make sure architects and engineers are on the up-and-up.

About time. Too bad the building boom is over.
What's the running total of dead and injured workers over the past three years?
