Closing Time on 5th Avenue

5th-ave-closings-02-2008.jpg
Over the past few days several businesses on 5th Avenue in the Slope have announced that they're calling it quits. It doesn't appear that rent hikes are the sole cause of the pileup of shutterings, though they may have contributed to a couple of these closings:

Biscuit BBQ: The restaurant, which relocated from Flatbush Ave., took the place of the former Night & Day diner on President Street. No word on why the restaurant has decided to close. Will the back room jazz venue live on?

Nancy Nancy: The card/knick-knack store has been open for nearly 10 years. According to the shop's blog, the landlord pulled the lease, but NN's stuff will still be on sale at NancyNancy.com.

Cocotte: The French restaurant, which opened in 2002, in saying goodbye because of "rising rent and an inability to make a go of it financially," according to Gowanus Lounge.

Hollywood Video: The large video rental store closed last weekend. The chain movie-rental biz is in the process of closing hundreds of stores nationwide. With the vacated Eckerd space only a block away, that means there's two pretty large retail locations now available on 5th.

In a word, superfluous.

would be nice to add all of the store openings on 5th in addition to the ones closing.

i can think of at least 5 that have opened in the last couple months.

makes for a more balanced article.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 12:22 PM

I'm excited about getting some of this mediocre crap out and some better stuff in.

None of these places were worth the sign above the door.

Maybe Nancy whatever but I have no use with the other 10 card stores in the Slope.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 12:23 PM

"makes for a more balanced article."

Not if the article is about CLOSINGS. Duh!

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 12:23 PM

Biscuit just wasn't that great.
As for hollywood video that seems like a good opportunity to tear down something ugly and build something ... less ugly. Or at least some new housing.

Posted by: WillBklyn at February 20, 2008 12:33 PM

I think the bingo place should expand upstairs and take over Hollywood Video. Chicken Legs!!!!

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 12:37 PM

That space at 5th and President must carry some sort of curse. This is maybe the 4th restaurant to go bust there in the last 6 years. I hope the next crew to try their luck there do some research - I am guessing the rent must be too high to be sustainable. It doesn't help that none of the places have been particularly good.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 12:40 PM

The curse shit is so stupid.

Night and Day and Biscuit BBQ simply weren't good restaurants. Period.

Quit it with the cursed location stuff.

That is a terrific location with tons of foot traffic and great shops nearby.

All it needs is a place with GOOD food.

Pretty simple actually.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 12:49 PM

These closings just keep happening all over the Slope. Could they be heading toward a slump once again. Or is it just a case of store front owners asking for too much rent? Perhaps Park Slope is just too big for their britches. Like how they act on brownstoner.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 12:52 PM

You're an idiot, 12:52.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 12:56 PM

Lissen here you Fort Greenehorn, the SLOPE ain't goin' nowhere. It is and always will be the "KING OF THE NABES!" So get used to it, you second class citizen. We're just trimmin' the fat for the next level of "best neighborhood in the world-dom"

I'm OUT!

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 12:56 PM

Maybe Babu can open a Dream Cafe at that location. No, wait, it should be a Pakistani restaurant to take advantage of his knowledge of his native cuisine. No, wait. Actually, I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about...

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 12:57 PM

I heard Mario Batali was scouting locations of 5th for a new restaurant.

Would be terrific.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 12:59 PM

I heard Brad Pitt only eats in Park Slope.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:02 PM

It's called TURNOVER people!

Out with the mediocre, in with something better!

It's not like Al Di La or Oko or Blue Ribbon are closing!

These places were average. And that's being SUPER generous.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:03 PM

Do you know why these and other stores are closing? Beacause of two reasons. The Consumer is taped out and high assed commercial rents.

The marginal neighborhoods are going to get creamed. Clinton Hill, Bed-Stuy, Bushwick and Prospect Heights (Yes PH).

Sad that the Asshats can't see whats going on.

The What

Someday this war is gonna end...

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:05 PM

Actually, I thought Cocotte was pretty good.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:05 PM

I live on 2nd St. off of 7th Avenue and that stretch of 7th Ave. is becoming a ghost town -- Tempo Presto, the bookstore, 2nd St Cafe -- all boarded up. Not to mention the stretch of abandoned storefronts on 7th btwn Union and Berkeley (the ones that suspiciously caught fire about 3 years ago and have never been renovated since.) Simply put, rents are too high in Park Slope. Yes, the food is bad to mediocre and great food would make some difference, but there are enough people in the nabe who will eat anywhere if it's child friendly and convenient, it's still not enough (see 2nd Street Cafe.) Landlords have to stop being stubborn and greedy. It's ridiculous to see prime commercial real estate sit unused.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:06 PM

too bad, notwithstanding the above comments, i always liked biscuit and thought it offered good food in a good atmosphere. the food at the smoke joint in fort greene is better than biscuit, but the smoke joint just ain't the best place to eat -- and I always enjoyed having some bbq and watching a game at biscuit. any other alternatives for bbq around?

for what its worth, biscuit didn't really just relocate from flatbush ave. it went broke at flatbush, and then reopened with new investors on fifth ave. but i guess it didn't really work out for them either.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:08 PM

In the past 12 months the following have opened on 5th avenue (or are about to open)...I consider this list an improvment over those places which have closed:

1. Flight001
2. Teddy
3. Maria's Restaurant
4. Oko
5. Soula Shoes
6. GetFreshNYC
7. Brooklyn Bakery and Cafe
8. Fatoosh
9. FIT gym
10. Canaille French Bistro
11. A.O.C. Bistro
12. Earth Tonez Vegetarian Cafe
13. 'Snice

I'm sure I'm forgetting some. I think nearly everything on that list is a step up from the crap that closed.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:08 PM

Biscuit had huge crowds when it opened at this location - but it had lousy food and poor service.

While higher rent may be a factor in the closings of certain stores (like a card store) at a restaurant a few thousand (a month) shouldn't make or break you, which is why busy restaurants (generally) can absorb tremendous rents but empty ones can't support any rent level at all.

5th Ave could use a high end grocer - with a focus on fish/seafood.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:08 PM

But Park Slope is better than every neighborhood in Brooklyn accept Carroll Gardens, which is even better. How can Park Slope ask for rents that are lower than Fort Green rents. That would mean they would have to admit that Park Slope is on its way out.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:09 PM

Biscuit was truly awful. Something happened when they moved to 5th avenue from Flatbush. I assumed it wasn't the same owner b/c the food was so bad. When I was there, the place was filled with smoke and the waitress was annoyed that patrons were concerned. The ribs were horrendous! Good riddens!

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:09 PM

Guess it's time to admit that Park Slope is dudsville. Boring, mediocre, and just plain depressing -- who wants to walk down the street and see a bunch of yapping yuppie moms? This is NYC land of the extremes. Where's the gay, the black, the freak, the poor, the glamorous? Not in park slope.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:09 PM

"Do you know why these and other stores are closing?"

Yes. Because they suck. Like 12:49 said.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:11 PM

5th Ave between 1st and 9th needs a GREAT wine and liquor store. I don't want to haul ass up to overpriced Red, White and Bubbly and I'm tired of giving money to DaSilva's bulletproof glass shitshop when I'm not up to hoofing up to 7th Ave.

Someone please open something, PLEASE! I'm thirsty!

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:12 PM

If you don't see gay people in Park Slope, 1:09 you are blind.

Has anyone realized that Park Slope between 5th and 7th Avenues has more retail than Ft. Green, Clinton Hill, Carroll Gardens, COMBINED!

A few crappy places going out of business ain't a big deal.

Especially with a new one opening practically every week.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:13 PM

No Gays in Park Slope? - are you blind?

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:13 PM

How come Park Slope gets so defensive as soon as they see other neighborhoods like Fort Green or Carroll Gardens getting some higher rents or sale prices? Stores are closing so lower your rents and everyone will be happy.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:13 PM

Somebody needs to turn their gaydar on.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:15 PM

Prediction - next (formerly good) now mediocore restaurant to close on 5th = Bellville

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:15 PM

Biscut was crappy on Flatbush, and I guess it retained its crappiness on 5th avenue. Its too bad, 'cause who doesn't love good BBQ?

Biscuit's second demise shows you that folks don't like Bad BBQ. I didn't like that they served half-cooked food to you: I had an experience with a pink "deep fried" chicken and another one with some pink ribs.

Do you think they'll try to resurrect this thing, like the phoenix, a thrid time?

You know what they say, the third time is the charm.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:15 PM

I guess we don't have trolls like you, 1:09--but I'm willing to live with that loss.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:15 PM

I like Park Slope. Its cute. But they try a bit too hard.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:16 PM

bad restaurants close. who cares?
biscuit sucked on flatbush and sucked on fifth. . . . maybe they can open a sucky place somewhere else

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:16 PM

IF YOU ALL WANT RESTAURANTS THAT ARE GUARANTEED NOT TO CLOSE, YOU SHOULD WISH FOR AN APPLEBEES!!!!

This is what happens in neighborhoods with 90% mom and pops.

Some make it and SOME DON'T!

Those pronouncing the end of Park Slope retail are IDIOTS!

You want to see the end of retail, go to Manhattan!!! A bank, duane reade on EVERY CORNER!

That list above shows you what kind of nice small shops are opening...mom and pops and tiny 2 and 3-store small chains.

Get a clue, people. Park Slope is lucky to have so much retail.

YOU KNOW YOU ALL SHOP THERE!

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:16 PM

Hollywood video would make an excellent Applebees

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:18 PM

Shop there? I break out it hives when I am anywhere near there.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:19 PM

I think Applebees would be an fine addition to Park Slope.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:20 PM

Ok, sorry, I didnt' mean gay, I meant queer.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:22 PM

"YOU KNOW YOU ALL SHOP THERE!"

Wrong. Maybe if I lived there, as I once did. But there isn't anything so special in Park Slope that can't be acquired in other parts of Brooklyn, or in NYC in general. Sorry to disappoint you. It seems 1:16 is correct.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:23 PM

I would love to see a Buca di Beppo open on 5th Ave--it needs a large space, though, so maybe where the Rite Aid or Hollywood video were. I think it would really add a touch of sophistication to an otherwise drab shopping strip.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:23 PM

Sounds like you need to see a doctor, 1:19.

Don't like Park Slope sounds like...You only like ugly things then, huh?

I won't tell your wife, don't worry...

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:23 PM

My favorite stores/restaurants in Brooklyn are on 5th...

Bob and Judy's Antique Shop
Brooklyn Eyewear
Matter
Blue Ribbon Sushi
Al Di La
Beacon's Closet
Oko
Soula

Oh and I love flight001!

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:26 PM

Why, 1:09pm, do you think Carrol Gardens is better than PS? In fact, among Boerum Hill, Park Slope, Cobble Hill & Ft Greene, Carrol Gardens is by fat the ugliest, least convenient & shittiest neighbourhood.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:30 PM

I wouldn't mind an Applebee's Presto!

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:32 PM

Maybe Apple will take a look at one of these larger spaces opening up on 5th.

Or a Gourmet Garage or Garden of Eatin'

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:34 PM

It's time for a full on neighborhood throwdown. Meet at Floyd Bennett Field on Saturday at 8 AM and come armed with:

Park Slope (cherry crown molding)

Carroll Gardens (That waiter from Sam's)

Fort Greene (a wigger)

Prospect Heights (whatever Bruce Ratner shoved up their ass)

Billyburg (Father's stock portfolio)

Clinton Hill (Turpentine stolen from Pratt)

Windsor Terrace (Republican platform)

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:38 PM

I thought biscuit sucked, but i'm pretty sure that the "pinkness" was a result of the smoking process. I could be wrong, though. Any food snobs out there know?

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:41 PM

im surprised the blockbuster on flatbush by 8th ave is still open.

get rid of video stores. they suck

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:42 PM

Anyone who isn't downloading movies directly to the chip implanted in their head needs to get a clue.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:43 PM

Is it pronounced Flight "One" or "Flight oh-oh-one"...or Flight "Zero-zero-one?" I was corrected by the sales staff on my first trip there. It's Flight One (& overpriced.)

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:44 PM

pinkness is from smoking

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:44 PM

Flight001 is having a huge sale right now.

Bought some great shit there this past weekend.

30% off.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:49 PM

They do have some nice shit there...I will check it out this week!

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:50 PM

Yeah, the pinkness is from smoking--but Biscuit fucked up all the time by OVERCOOKING their food. I had a couple orders of dried out ribs there and that was IT for me. That chef should be busted down to busboy.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:50 PM

The only time Biscuit BBQ received any press was now that it's closing.

If someone hadn't mentioned it, I would never know it had left.

Ciao.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:53 PM

Save Biscuit!!!!!

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:56 PM

hollywood video BLEW. good riddance to them and the incompetent crew who worked there...

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:58 PM

Let's not mince words about Bisuits. It's one of if not the worst bbq place in a city that is suddenly teeming with good BBQ places. It's well worth it to take the trip to the Smoke Joint, for example, in Fort Green over the crap they tried to pass off at Biscuit. And the atmosphere was pretty bad too.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 1:59 PM

Hollywood video:

What a waste of 4400 square feet.

Can't wait to see something worthwhile in there.

Maybe a grocery store that doesn't smell like dead bodies?

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 2:00 PM

someone should open a chicken and waffles place where biscuit bit it.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 2:01 PM

Not big enough for a grocery store, 2:00... but some sort of Union Market style gourmet emporium would probably do pretty well.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 2:02 PM

I'd love to see a medium/high quality brunch spot where Biscuit was.

Something like Robin Des Bois on Smith.

It has that nice outdoor space, now it just needs some halfway decent food.

Or how about something like Lupa?

We already have Al Di La, though...

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 2:03 PM

How about one of those Amish Markets?

I think there's one up on 9th Avenue in Hells Kitchen.

I wish another Sahadi's would open in the slope.

Maybe even up on 7th, since there is such a crappy food store selection up there.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 2:05 PM

Umm, I have some movies from there that I never returned. Can I keep them you think?

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 2:07 PM

Probably not, 2:07. They've got their golf-shirted soon-to-be-ex-employees wandering the streets with scanners...

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 2:09 PM

You PS people are some real pompous dbags.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 2:14 PM

When is that baby gap going to open?

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 2:15 PM

caroll gardens rocks!
caroll gardens rocks!
caroll gardens rocks!
caroll gardens rocks!

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 2:17 PM

sad loser, 2:14. if you need a rental, none available.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 2:19 PM

no we're not

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 2:23 PM

I have one available.

A studio. 2000 bucks a month.

Want it? If not, I have 10 others in line.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 2:24 PM

make that 11, 2:24. sweet deal!!

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 2:29 PM

Flight001 will close within a year.

Cure place, but how often does one buy luggage?

I love Fifth Ave, but that sort of store is only going to fly (sorry, bad pun intended) in Soho or Midtown.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 2:31 PM

Um...there has been a Flight001 on Smith Street in sleepy Carroll Gardens for 2 or 3 years now.

If they can make it there, they can make it on 5th Avenue. Trust me.

I spent $800 bucks in there on Sunday.

They also have a VERY lucrative website that subsidizes what they don't make in their stores.

They researched for this location for 2 years. They would not have opened or signed a 10 year lease if they weren't planning to stay.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 2:40 PM

2:40=Flight001 investor

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 2:44 PM

Nope, just love the store and used to date one of the guys who worked there.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 2:47 PM

the rent on my little 1bed in north slope by the park just went up to $1750.

zing

time to move.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 3:10 PM

1750 is not a bad deal for a 1 bedroom in the north slope.

you're going to have to go to a pretty unsavory neighborhood to get much cheaper...

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 3:19 PM

Biscuit is renovating and changing names, chefs and floor staff. Keep your eyes open in about a month and it will be all shiny, new and much, much better.

Posted by: downtown_denizen at February 20, 2008 3:25 PM

1200, 2 bed in kensington off church ave. 5 mins to train, 10 mins to park, 2 mins to Shenanigans.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 3:26 PM

I hope they do something to class up the interior.

It looked HIDEOUS as Biscuit BBQ.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 3:29 PM

kensington???

nothing registers...

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 3:29 PM

Here is a good idea for any "new" Biscuit - buy Roy Rogers Fried Chicken recipe add Carsons Mail order Ribs and Costco Rotisserie Chicken and reopen - Food quality will increase 1000% and so will business

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 3:32 PM

hell, Dinty Moore Beef Stew would be better than the crap Biscuit pawned off on the public.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 3:49 PM

2:47=Dumped by Flight001 principal, but refrfeshingly supportive.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 3:51 PM

I dumped HIM!!

He was too queeny.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 3:56 PM

Actually Roys chicken alone would work - by far the best Fried Chicken around....makes a trip down the NJ Turnpike a treat

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 4:03 PM

"I spent $800 bucks in there on Sunday."

And the next time you spend $800 at Flight001 will be in how many YEARS?

The place will be gone within a year. Two tops.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 4:28 PM

You sound fun, 4:28.

Hope you don't have kids. Such a negative nelly.

You don't know me.

I've bought something at Flight001 probably every other week since they opened in December.

I like the store.

You don't.

End of story.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 4:35 PM

Park Slope sucks. Suck it, slopers

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 4:54 PM

wow, that was original, 4:54. how many times you posted that one before? 20, 30?

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 4:55 PM

Park Slope is definitely kind of shabby. The streets are really dirty, and everything closes early. Depressing.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 4:57 PM

SHABBY CHIC!

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 5:00 PM

just a side note...if you consider park slope dirty and depressing, that is a little something called, projecting.

you, my friend sound like the depressed one.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 5:01 PM

I think the loss here is Nancy Nancy. It's the old mom-n-pop model that used to define Park Slope. That woman has been running that store pretty much by herself for years, offering a somewhat creative product. Far better than that stupid eyesore of a clothing store on the corner of Union and 5th, banks and cell phone stores

Cocotte tried hard. It's sad; this is someone's dream.

Sorry, Biscuit had their chance. Why do restaurants think the recipe for better business is higher prices and mediocre food?

And Hollywood? Who's cryin' over that one? not me!

Posted by: rubytoday at February 20, 2008 5:08 PM

I can't wait to see what new stuff is going to open!!!

Park Slope retail has been on a steady increase in quality over the last couple years.

Just heard about the cute new organic frozen yogurt place opening on Berkeley and 7th today.

Sounds terrific!

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 5:13 PM

Well I live here and (5th Ave) is ridiculously dirty, and the merchants mostly open late and close early.

Frankly it is kind of a disgrace...while it is nice to have so many "mom & pops" - it would be nice if Mom and Pop actually opened when people are around (who can go shopping 10-6 m-F) (is that PS coffee and Tea place opened more than 5 hrs a week???)and even nicer if the businesses cleaned up all the trash and debris that litter the sidewalk.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 5:19 PM

you're gross, 5:19.

you sound like a total loser.

go sweep it yourself.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 5:31 PM

PS Coffee and Tea was in the neighborhood when you were still strumming your Martin Copy at some Bard orgy, 5:19 so do yourself and all of us a favor and STFU.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 5:36 PM

"I dumped HIM!! He was too queeny."

You dumped HIM and then dropped EIGHT at his place??? Please explain.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 5:43 PM

"I've bought something at Flight001 probably every other week since they opened in December."

That's a heckuva lotta luggage.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 5:54 PM

I dropped 800 at the 5th Avenue store.

The guys I used to date workED at the one on Greenwich Street in Manhattan. This was years ago.

And just because we are no longer dating doesn't mean we aren't friends.

We hang out often. He was just a little too gay for my taste in terms of attraction.

No big woop.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 5:56 PM

"That's a heckuva lotta luggage."

They sell other things besides luggage.

I got a great little portable mini speaker for my ipod there.

I bought a jack spade laptop case that was like 30% off and super nice.

And I bought two gifts there for friend birthdays.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 5:58 PM

Thanks for sharing, 5:56. You seem like a nice, balance sort. I like your style. You're probably way too mature for this site.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 6:04 PM

Many years ago, the biscuit location was a dry cleaners. That is a much better use of the space than yet another restaurant

Al di la should go back to the pizza place it once was and Moutarde should go back to the funeral parlor it once was.

Park Slope is a digusting mess of overpriced restaurants and clothing stores. Time to clean it up.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 6:07 PM

I totally agree with 5:19. I recently moved to the neighborhood (6th & Park Place) and I've noticed how late the stores open and how early they close. It's worse than a random Main Street in any small town. Isn't Brooklyn part of NYC???? Also, 5th Ave should be much cleaner than it is, and so should the side streets of a lot of the North Slope.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 6:15 PM

Yummy--Buca de Beppo. Screw the pretentiousness of Al Di La.

http://bucadibeppo.com/

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 6:26 PM

Park Slope is one of the cleanest neighborhoods in NYC.

Park Slope is not just 5th Avenue.

Many places including the now famous Flight001 are open till 8pm on weekdays.

Just like their Manhattan counterparts.

Park Slope ain't perfect...that's for darn sure. But you people will complain about ANYTHING and EVERYTHING.

Posted by: guest at February 20, 2008 7:17 PM

Thanks 6:04.

I couldn't possibly be good people though....I live in Park Slope.

Or haven't you heard? We all suck.

Not only do you suck, you are painfully self-involved. Whenever this site posts something about Park Slope, the posts become really boring really fast. Slopers are losers.

Thank heaven that 7:40's post was neither boring nor self-involved.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

have any of the Slopers seen this silly thread on Brooklynian?

8:05. Thank you for saving this thread. Your post was, by far, the most enjoyable thing I have read all day. Are you a writer? If not, I would suggest you submit that post to a publisher. I bet you could make a lot of money.

8:07: That thread is part of the reason people hate the slope.

8:09 is a clever one.

Dirty????

This is a city, people!

Besides, the dirt comes from the "tourists" that all our "cute" restaurants are luring in. Why should the B&T-ers keep the nabe clean? they don't live there!

As for the post about Al Di La being pretentious. Have you ever actually eaten there? The reason the restaurant is so successful is precisely b/c it's not pretentious. They offer excellent food and service at very reasonable prices, really friendly service. (ok, the hosts can be short and matter-of-fact about your hour wait, but it's a business.)

Yes, the line outside is ridiculous, but it's not unmerited.

Ruby: La di da is pretentious. Bring back the pizza parlor.

btw, Brooklynites are part of the B&T crowd you asshat.

why do you have to call people names?

grow up

Posted by: rubytoday at February 21, 2008 12:10 PM

oh, and while your at it, go stuff your face with yet MORE pizza (hmmm...how many do we have in the hood--15???), since you're just a bit too lowbrow for an actual restaurant.

then go hybernate in your apartment and park your oversized ass on the couch and think of clever posts to put on brownstoner

I must have pushed a button. Go back to your little home town in the midwest, settle down and come back when you are able to take the heat.

You are the reason people don't like the Slope. You try to justify silliness and then you get all hot under the collar when someone calls you on your crap.

I loved Cocotte. Very sad to see it go :(

Posted by: guest at February 21, 2008 12:40 PM

I liked Cocotte much more than Belleville. The food was very good, the drinks creative and the service warm and good. That's a real loss for the neighborhood. I'll miss Biscuit, too -- I enjoyed the pulled pork sandwich with a side of grits. Never tried the ribs or chicken, though, so maybe I got the one good thing on the menu.

Hollywood Video isn't a big loss, but I wonder what will go in that space -- I'm surprised that the Eckerd property hasn't been snapped up yet. I'm wondering if the commercial landlords are getting unreasonably greedy.

How much does retail space go for on 5th ave (north)? Does anyone have any idea what the price per sq/foot is?
