Closing Bell: Ratner Gets Sued; Ward’s Doomed

bruce-ratner-02-2008.jpgThe Observer is reporting on all things Bruce Ratner today. First off, they’ve got word that a Brooklyn "activist" by the name of Clive Campbell is suing Ratner, Jay-Z and Barclays Bank for $5 billion in slavery reparations. Campbell says that Ratner, Jay-Z and Barclays all stand to profit via Atlantic Yards “from the African Slave Trade and continue to profit from these gains, through a conspiracy dating back hundreds of years and continue to date to oppress Black people, enslave them, unlawfully deport them to all corners of the Earth.” (Barclays, which owns the naming rights to the Atlantic Yards arena, has conceded that companies it’s purchased may have been involved in the slave trade.) The Observer also reported today that Ratner recently purchased a 6,408-square-foot brownstone on the Upper East Side for nearly $7 million. (We think he could’ve gotten a better deal right here in Brooklyn—maybe even in Carroll Gardens, where we hear values are increasing quite a bit.) And, in a final bit of AY-specific news, the ESD sent out a press release today noting that demolition at Ward's Bakeryis going to continue over the next couple of weeks; barring unforeseen circumstances, it appears likely that the building will be all gone by the middle of March.

Yep, sound like an anti AY-er to me. And makes about as much sense.

OF COURSE his brownstone is NOT in Brooklyn.

I heard that Bruce's new brownstone is blighted and that if we demolish it and replace it with a 10 story Starbucks it will benefit the public. His neighbors said they don't mind.

The destruction of Ratner's brownstone will create a few jobs for a little while. According to my calculations, it will generate $732 million in tax revenue and should therefore be underwritten to the tune of at least $500 million. Let me know where I can pick up my check.

Ratner is gonna pack that uptown brownstone with all the fine shit he's looting from brooklyn town houses.

Posted by: guest at February 25, 2008 5:46 PM

i'm gonna open a hotel on the site of Ratners new UES brownstone. it's gonna be a hotel for young kids who want to come to NYC and attend sporting events at the various arenas and stadiums around the area. sort of like a chaperoned youth hotel. time to talk to Bloomberg about emminent domaining the site. where's Sheldon Silver at? i need to speak with him...

Posted by: guest at February 25, 2008 5:59 PM

I hear his mattresses are plush and stuffed with shredded Brooklyn taxpayer money.

Posted by: guest at February 25, 2008 6:03 PM

4:31- NO it's not... A DONE DEAL.

Posted by: guest at February 25, 2008 7:15 PM

DUNG DEAL.

Posted by: guest at February 25, 2008 7:24 PM

The more suing of these lame asses the better. I too would love to eminent domain his house and replace it with whatever he hates most...like unbondaged africans.

FYI:
Editor's Note: This story originally reported that the Clive Campbell who filed the claim was the real name of D.J. Kool Herc, a founder of hip hop. In fact, it is a different Clive Campbell. Mr. Campbell is a Brooklyn-based activist. The story has been corrected.

Twas not Kool Herc who sued the man.

A reparations suit will get tossed from the court. It's a waste of taxpayers' time and money, and that's that.

The successor-in-interest claim won't work.

This guy should consult with DDDB. I mean, they've been wildly successful fighting AY in the legal arena.

Another bullsh-t lawsuit, if its even true, it will go nowhere, Hey wait a minute Im irish, we were discriminated againist too 100 years ago, I think I'll sue for reperations myself.

Posted by: guest at February 26, 2008 8:13 AM

Hey Irishman, how was your enslavement?

Posted by: guest at February 26, 2008 9:35 AM

Posted by: guest at February 26, 2008 12:32 PM

Shame on you Barack Obama! Shame on you.

The What keep going you are the only one who makes any sense.

Posted by: guest at February 26, 2008 12:52 PM

I don't deserve shit, 12:32--I'm not black. I'm just calling out that tired assed "no Irish need apply" line. To even compare it is laughable. As are you.
