Closing Bell: McDonald's a Blight on Park Slope?
Bees to honey! Or McNuggets. Or…anyhow, when we read the Brooklynian headline "Hideous New Eyesore on 9th Street," we were so there. Turns out the eyesore in question is a big yellow awning for the recently renovated McDonald's between 4th and 5th avenues, and Brooklynian folks are calling it "mindblowingly ugly" and "g-d awful." (Sure is!) The larger question, however, surfaces toward the end of the thread: Is McD’s better or worse for the neighborhood than the porn theater it replaced? Jury's out.

what's wrong with it?
it's a mcdonalds for god's sake.
always been yellow and red. what's the issue?
sounds like much ado about nothing to me.
the golden arches have never been known to be the epitome of classy design.
were you expecting something hunter green or navy????
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 4:09 PM
i actually kind of like the storefront itself
the awning, however, is TOTALLY UNNECESSARY

i don't understand why anyone ever eats fast food in new york city.

Thank god they didn't open that McDonald's on Court Street here in Carroll Gardens. Just another reason for me not to move to PS.
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 4:13 PM
porn theather would be a better bet!
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 4:14 PM
Special Sauce?
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 4:17 PM
I thought the whole concept of fast food started in New York City. The hot dog, the automat, the knish from a cart....
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 4:19 PM
when was there a theatre there? Not recently?
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 4:25 PM
The carroll Gardens posters are becoming the most obnoxious on this site. What happened my CG of old, when I actually liked it here. It's the same as PS
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 4:26 PM
the mcd's is still in the works for smith street, btw.
dumbasses.
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 4:31 PM
CG is the worst. Smith Street is a dump. The PJs are the best thing about that whole area. That and hamilton expressway.
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 4:32 PM
4:13 spends his/her days counting reasons why PS shouldn't be move to, and endlessly pondering the question of whether the decision not to move there was indeed correct.
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 4:36 PM
I agree. Why is god's name would someone choose CG over PS...NO PARK, INFERIOR SCHOOLS and ONE CRAPPY F TRAIN.
5th Avenue has ALL the same stores as Smith (and then some!), it has 2 or 3 above average schools and one of the most beautiful parks around.
Oh and the F, 2/3 and Q trains.
Given that both are about the same price, it seems rather foolish to choose CG over PS to me.
Unless you were born into the mob or married your sister.
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 4:36 PM
Or your cousin. I'd love a drive-thru on Smith Street. Love that Mickey D's
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 4:47 PM
It's just rank snobbery to think there is anything wrong with a McDonald's in that location. Besides, they've done up the inside very handsomely. Anyway, better a McDonald's than a Starbucks.
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 4:48 PM
Carroll Gardens however has one thing Park Slope lacks - safety.
Posted by: Polemicist at February 22, 2008 4:51 PM
This is ok for a Mc Donalds. What a bunch of snobs.
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 4:52 PM
care to show us the stats, polemicist?
also keeping in mind that cg is about 1/10th the size of park slope?
please, because everything else you say here is so wise and factual, i'm really curious....
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 4:53 PM
That McDonalds has been there for well over twenty years, which is probably a little longer than the people who are hating on it.
Posted by: Flatbushwhacker at February 22, 2008 4:59 PM
For all you McD haters I think the renovation is a vast improvement over the indoor playground that was there before. 52 plazma tv screen great to watch MSNBC on while I eat my two apple pies for a dollar. Many seniors from across the way drink coffee there and catch up on how all the new young people in the neighborhood have nothing better to do with there lives than critique awnings.
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 5:00 PM
here's the stats for the 78th Precinct which is responsible for PS. Looks pretty impressive to me. Crime is going down there faster than hillary's poll ratings.

Who living in NYC eats this shit. Mcdonalds is for when you're driving on the highway.
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 5:03 PM
whats so safe about carrol gardens? The mommies there are always complaining about the hooliganism in the parks and smith street was and still is a great place to get purse snatched, mugged or beaten down

As McD's go, that place is an architectural gem. An excellent renovation. One hopes the place will appear less frequently in the police blotter.
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 5:05 PM
Here's the 76th precinct's stats which covers carroll gardens and cobble hill. It's hard to base on shear numbers because of the different population of cg and Ps, but PS's rate is trending much better and CG's rate is up so far vs last year while ps's is significantly down. Of course, it's only 1.5 months in. Needless to say both neighborhoods are safe so whoever started this babyish nitpicking (it's like my dad can beat your dad), please refrain.
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 5:13 PM
sorry forgot to include the link to cg's stats for the 76th pct

if they put a mcd's in carroll gardens, how long before there's a big mob murder there?
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 5:22 PM
As someone already said, this McD's has been there FOREVER. Freaking 20-something whiners on Brooklynian should STFU. That is the most annoying message board ever. It's an embarrassment to Brooklyn.
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 5:25 PM
there are already mob murders in cg.
one more on the list would be no big woop.
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 5:25 PM
yeah, but it would signal a big comedown for the mob. murders should be in steakhouses, gelateria's, etc. not frickin' mcd's!
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 5:26 PM
I was in that McDonald's just this morning (SUCK MY DICK, HATERS) and picked up an egg mcmuffin after shoveling snow. The kid at the cash register was the single friendliest food service person I've EVER encountered, ANYWHERE. Not sure how that happened. The woman who was working with him was very friendly, too.
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 5:30 PM
true dat.
i was over on smith last weekend and noticed way too many closed up storefronts.
has anyone else noticed that 5th ave has gotten so much better while smith kinda sucks?
love court street, though.
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 5:31 PM
So it's been there almost 30 years?
And they recently updated the facade?
It seems they have a successful business there in Park Slope. It would be interesting to know what percent of their clientele live in the area.
Posted by: Hal at February 22, 2008 5:34 PM
smith is always backed up with traffic. pussy assed one way street.
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 5:35 PM
I'm a big McD hater (read:EcoVeg). But they have been around longer than I (42 years in NYC) and people DO eat there. Hell, even I frequented McD and Burger King before I started to eat right!
Posted by: rh at February 22, 2008 5:36 PM
they recently totally gut renovated it and updated the facade, hal. i don't eat there, but i would imagine that most of the clientele is local. maybe a few people from the hospital haul their ass down there for lunch, maybe...
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 5:38 PM
Relevant or not, McD's did NOT replace a porn theater - that's just a bit of PS urban lore or just plain b.s.
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 5:44 PM
god, i WISH ps had a porn theater!!!
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 5:48 PM
Maybe a porn theater will move into Hollywood Video.
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 5:50 PM
Park Slope is great that it is near Prospect Park but in my opinion I really feel that people in CG are just more down to earth.
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 5:57 PM
when looking for a home, most people care more about the park, the more beautiful homes, the better schools and the lower crime, 5:57.
the people are an afterthought. no one goes and talks to neighbors before they buy a house.
i personally think you are wrong and think cg has the exact same people as park slope basically, but when deciding on a neighborhood it all comes down to the house and the services.
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 6:00 PM
Where is "Ruby on the Rag" complaining about how down market McD's is? I am sure she was there protesting and asking that the store be replaced with some obnoxious, overpriced and pretentious restaurant.
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 6:27 PM
Is that restaurant to the right of McD's still an Italo-Argentine place?
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 6:37 PM
The McDonald's renovation is great (and I can live with the awning). I stop there all the time when I'm being good on my lowcarb diet (loved the $1 double cheeseburger deal in January). I wish the neighborhood had a Wendy's or Burger King, too. Give me fast meat and cheese!
Posted by: ProfRobert at February 22, 2008 6:51 PM
I wish their were porn theaters in every neighborhood in brooklyn. Their should be more than one in neighborhoods like park slope where their are a lot of kids. Makes for a good healthy upbringing!
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 7:42 PM
Kids who watch porn write "their" when they should write "there."
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 7:54 PM
the kids in ps get a pretty good sex ed class with all the gays and lezzies around.
the gay men seem to have come here in droves lately.
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 7:58 PM
This whole thread was torture to read, but I can't help commenting about the McD's. It did indeed replace a porn theater in the early 70s...I remember passing it in the car with my parents and seeing a flick called "All in the Sex Family" featured on the marquis. Anyway, porn theaters are obsolete, now that DVDs are so readily available. As for McD's, I don't see what's the big deal. That block isn't anything to look at, with its huge Mitchell Lama building across the street and the ugly post office.
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 8:41 PM
The new 1/3 pound angus burger with mushrooms and cheddar is actually surprisingly good. And for four bucks it's a steal.
Posted by: guest at February 22, 2008 10:29 PM
people love fast food no matter were they live.
shit the Applebees by the Dekalb stop is packed with people who as far as I can tell are locals.
Posted by: guest at February 23, 2008 12:06 AM
No one is forcing anyone to eat there, it's a choice, among many choices one makes everyday about where or what they are going to eat. If that's not your poison, pass by. What's the big deal?
Posted by: guest at February 23, 2008 1:25 AM
Lets get back to the real issue at hand. Park Slope is beginning to look a lot like Dallas, Texas. And soon enough everybody in that neighborhood will look like Texans. I will continue to live in the greatest neighborhood in the world where I know I will always be safe because it has for its entire history, CARROLL GARDENS!!!!
Posted by: guest at February 23, 2008 6:46 AM
This facade looks fine. They're TRYING. But it's fast food, not a wine bar. What kind of facade do you expect? As if any of the commercial streets in Brooklyn look all that great anyway. Whether it's Smith Street or 5th Avenue there are plenty of ugly storefronts on those streets. Plenty.
So whatever.
Next.
Posted by: guest at February 23, 2008 12:09 PM
the mcds has been there for 30 years.
how is the neighborhood "beginning to look a lot like texas?"
the idiocy of posters here never ceases to amaze me.
Posted by: guest at February 23, 2008 12:10 PM
6:46 has convinced me that I not only never want to live in Carroll Gardens but I'm never shopping there either.
Gross.
Posted by: guest at February 23, 2008 12:27 PM
Did they ever catch the Carroll Gardens Cornice Snatcher? All those poor, poor brownstones, stripped of their period detail. Sad really.
Posted by: guest at February 23, 2008 12:43 PM
Ha! Love it, 12:43.
Posted by: guest at February 23, 2008 12:52 PM
Does the 9th St. location have a parking lot & drive "thru"? I know the McD's on 4th and 1st has both. As does the one on Atlantic at Vanderbilt.
_This_ is the true travesty. Drive-throughs and parking lots are anti-urban.
I also can't wait until the owners of the Key Food on 5th Ave can no longer stand missing out on the actual value of their huge parking lot and develop it.
Posted by: guest at February 23, 2008 4:43 PM
carroll gardens.
Posted by: guest at February 23, 2008 11:32 PM
This McD's should try this:

Posted by: guest at February 24, 2008 9:29 PM
The new facade and new interior is a vast improvement over what was there before.
