A Sign That Bushwick Has Officially Arrived?

bushwick-thai-02-2008.jpg
BushwickBK’s got a post on the impending opening of the neighborhood’s very first Thai restaurant. The blog calls it “a major point in the evolution of modern Bushwick…We all know that the Thai restaurant is the ultimate harbinger of Hipsterdom. Soon, we’ll have 7 within a 60 second walk of each other.” The restaurant is supposed to open soon at 214 Knickerbocker Avenue.

Completely, entirely underwhelming.

Bushwick is still dangerous and ugly so...no.

In 20 years, maybe.

Thai food is not "hip", is it? I'm Thai...does that make me hip?

I find that basically all of the NYC Thai restaurants serve blech food. You got to go to Cali for good Thai food in the US.

"Thai food is not 'hip', is it? I'm Thai...does that make me hip?"

Yes, absolutely. Particularly if you are a beautiful woman.

Having recently moved to Bushwick, near the L train, I find it to be a decent working class neighborhood with fairly good services. It is not particularly hip and we could use a few more restaurants. I moved hear because it is cheap, I feel reasonably safe, and I can get into Manhattan in less than half an hour. I am happy that a new Thai place is opening. I bet they do well by catering to both the new residents and locals who want to try something different.

Thai was indicative of 'hip' in 1982.

This post just indicates that Brownstoner does not understand what makes something 'hip'.

While I am nauseated by this suggestion, I would say that the 'cutsie' girlie stores with $100 T-Shirts and $300 purses are probably the current watermark of gentrification.

Do you know how fish sauce is made? Scary.

The post is tongue in cheek, as Williamsburg's first smash hit restaurant was Planet Thai, an offshoot of Thai Cafe in Greenpoint. These places begat more thai restaurants than I care to think about. So they are creeping out on the L train.

If Northeast Kingdom is Bushwick's L Cafe, I guess this place is its Planet Thai. Maybe Life Cafe counts more but that is pushing into the fabled "East Williamsburg"

"I guess this place is its Planet Thai."

I don't see "smash hit" coming out of here. But, I may be wrong.

That's PlanEAT Thai, bub.

Posted by: guest at February 19, 2008 3:54 PM

Underwhelming? To me it's quite whelming. When yo've had next to nothing, anything sounds like something!

Even if it's weak I'll gladly take it over the neighborhood's nasty and ubiquitous chinese. (please be decent)

Thai person back again...

I still have to say that I get annoyed "Thai" being linked to "hip".

It used to be that "Thai" was always linked to "exotic".

I wonder at the mechanism that causes these language linkages.

Non-Hip Thai (More like "Eccentric Thai")

"Eccentric" and "exotic" are two different things, Thai person.

bushwick is fucking ugly and smelly.

So's your mom. and your wife. and your child.

what's your point?

Posted by: guest at February 19, 2008 7:32 PM

Do you know how hamburger is made? Scary.

You want a signal of gentrification?

Look for soy milk in the bodega.

Score bonus points for rice milk.

Bushwick is by no means a cheap neighborhood ... it's as expensive as Williamsburg was in 2005. Which is to say, pretty expensive.

Bushwick is already over before it gets its first Thai restaurant by virtue of ridiculously-expensive rents.

Posted by: guest at February 19, 2008 10:05 PM

pretty soon the strolllers will invade bushwick and the mothers will be chatting away and sipping their soy lattes.

I wish the owners of the new Thai Restaurant the very best of luck.
Opening a restaurant is very stressful.(been there and done that) I hope they are very successful.

To the idiot who found it necessary to note:

'"Eccentric" and "exotic" are two different things, Thai person.'

No kidding!
