Who You Gonna Call?

Brooklyn Based has compiled a neat list of its picks for some of the best repairmen and service businesses in Brooklyn. BB’s recommendations were culled, in part, from comments on a bunch of different websites (including Brownstoner), and the list is still a work in progress (bring on the feedback). Some of the recommended businesses include: Bicycle Station in Prospect Heights for bike repairs, Vego for carpentry, John Hlad Plumbing and Heating for plumbing, and The Lamp Warehouse for lighting repairs. Check out the full list here.

I will attest that Bicycle Station is good! They set my Serotta up very nicely.

I feel obliged to put a dig/thumbs down in for Dixon's on Union in PSlope. Anyone who sells me a tire iron (plastic) that snaps in half can't be trusted with a biycle.

Bicycly Station is so much better than R&A Cycles (on 5th Av) it's laughable. The best thing about Bicycle Station the mellow bald guy that runs/owns the place (he also used to have a custom shop on Flatbush, but it's a pet grooming shop now). He is friendly, knowledgeable and helpful, very much UNLIKE the 5th Av people, who are downright jerk-offs. Dixon's isn't as bad as R&A, but they aren't as good as Bicycle Station, either. Couch, if you were stupid enough to buy a PLASTIC tire iron, you have only yourself to blame. Dumb move.

Had a good recent experience at Bicycle Station. People, if you are looking for a decent beater bike to cruise around town/commute on, this is your place. Went in, checked out some old frames in the back, and Mike built me a bike by the next day. Probably not the shop for the tricked out, million-dollar fancy bike person, but based on the experience I had there, I definitely will be back.

What are you talking about? Tire irons have been plastic for, at least the last 20 years. You don't want metal around a $300 wheel.

"What are you talking about? Tire irons have been plastic for, at least the last 20 years. You don't want metal around a $300 wheel."

I'm talking about your dumb move. You were the one who pointed out the tire iron was plastic, obviously a factor in its breaking. It's called a tire IRON. IRON, as in metal.

"12:28 PM, its obvious why you are anon."

And it's obvious that you got stuck for the cost of a PLASTIC tire iron. Really bright.

I gotta side with BrooklynCouch, bicycle tireirons are plastic and have been plastic for the past 25+ years. And you don't want to put metal against your nice Carbon Cosmic or Fulcrom Rims...duh...

I've never broken one of the plastic tire irons and I've gotten lots of flats in my day. I have lost them.

"I gotta side with BrooklynCouch, bicycle tireirons are plastic and have been plastic for the past 25+ years."

Bike tire irons been metal for a whole lot longer than they have been plastic. Furthermore, there have been very expensive rims around for more than 25 years. It's OK to use a metal tire iron on an expensive rim if you use it carefully. Complaining because a PLASTIC iron broke is just plain stupid.
