StreetLevel: Slope's Best Pie?

pepes-pizza-12-07.JPG
A Brooklynian thread has word of a pizza place on 4th Avenue and 17th Street that's been garnering a lot of Internet buzz since opening a few months ago. A reviewer on Slice says Pepe's Pizza & Panini offers "a stand-up pie that's miles beyond that of any conventional-oven pizzeria currently operating in the neighborhood," and it has plenty of admirers on Chowhound. Has anyone checked this place out?

I've been noticing that place but hadn't tried it yet... I'm going NOW. Plus with the brick oven joint Peppino's opening on 5th between 10/11, I'm liking my investment in the nabe.

I cant beelive this place is like a 2 minute walk and I have never tried it. I have been looking for a decent slice since I left President Street.

BTW - Tomato and Basil on 4th between union and president makes a totally decent slice with sauce that is crack-addictive.

A consistently good slice of Grandma: Roma, on Seventh ave at Union St.

Re: Roma. I go in for one slice of Grandma and end up eating at least two, sometimes three!

Does Steve Buscemi own Smiling Pizza? I never understood the connection.

Love Tomato & Basil. Slices can be a bit sloppy...but the sauce is certainly addictive.

Anyone know if they deliver to north slope?

Posted by: guest at January 2, 2008 3:59 PM

It is clearly the best pie in Park Slope but then again thats like saying it has the best bagels in Boston.

Notwithstanding the above, Peppe's is GREAT and the guy who owns it (peppe???) is super nice.

Buscemi doesn't own Smiling. The owner's name is Steve (actually, the son of the owner, it's a family business.) I only know this because I sat next to him on a plane trip to Italy recently. Nice guy. Good pizza.

Steve Buscemi's name is also Steve.

Does John Turturro own John's Pizza?

What else is happening less than a block from my apartment that I don't know about?

Posted by: 16thStreeter at January 2, 2008 4:38 PM

Well then why is Buscemi always mentioned in relation to Smiling Pizza?????

Posted by: guest at January 2, 2008 4:57 PM

I'm with you 16th streeter - I just moved to this neighborhood 3 months ago - 16th street as well, and i keep finding my self pleasantly surprised with the stuff that keeps popping-up right under my nose.

Pizza Plus on 12th and 7th Ave (the new and improved post fire) makes my top list. Lenny's on 5th and Prospect used to be the shit, but totally down hill after the old man retired. The son's not quite living up to the family tradition...

Will have to try this place though, despite the awful locale.

Pino's on 7th between 1st and 2nd is better than Smiling...

Based on these raves I ordered a pie tonight for the family. Pretty damn good, though the guy screwed up my order and gave me a 1/2 pepperoni 1/2 eggplant when I'd ordered a half-pepp/half-plain (thought it seemed a tad pricey!). Also, for all the folks who went on about how friendly "Mike" is, I found him kinda grumpy. But we're all entitled to bad days... I'll definitely be back.

I read the thread on Chowhound and ordered my first pie from Peppe's last week. After seeing the raves, I ordered the Grandma's Pizza, and sadly, it was not very good. The sauce was more crushed tomatoes than an actual "sauce." And the crust wasn't anything to write home about. The owners seemed nice and I wanted the pizza to be good, I really did. Maybe I'll give them another chance once the buzz dies down a bit and they get more into their groove. Hope you guys have better pizza luck!

For pie in the Slope, I agree with Action Jackson. I love Pizza Plus. Pizza connoisseurs may balk, and I'll admit it's not the best pizza place in the world--I wouldn't suggest pilgrimages if you're not from the nabe, but it's a nice family business and they make a solid pie.

The House of Fried Calzone on Union St. off of Columbia has them all beat hands down. Deep Fried Calzones, an upside down slice, and the rice balls can't be beat.

And 3:59 "It is clearly the best pie in Park Slope but then again thats like saying it has the best bagels in Boston." What the hell are you talking about?
