StreetLevel: Mo' Money on Flatbush Ave.
Signage has gone up indicating that a Bank of America is opening on the northeast corner of Bergen and Flatbush, across the street from the old Royal Video location that may also become a bank branch. The big bank influx makes us wonder whether end times are near for that shady looking check-cashing place at 230 Flatbush. Anyhow, are readers on the Prospect Height-Slope border happy about the beefed-up ATM presence or is it just a snooze? GMAP

I actually think this is welcome addition along this strech.
Believe it or not, Park Slope and Prospect Heights are NOT saturated with banks like many other neighborhoods.
A lot of things along this part of Flatbush are a bit run-down, so in my mind, anything new and shiny is going to improve the area.
There's also a new cake shop opening right around here, I think. Across the street and a little closer to 7th?
Anyone know what's taking the place right across the street on Bergen where there was the Ricky's Halloween store?

I foresee lots of muggings at those new ATMs.
Posted by: guest at January 11, 2008 2:44 PM
You foresee a lot of muggings on a brightly lit and crowded corner of Flatbush Avenue next to the subway?
Ok.
Posted by: guest at January 11, 2008 2:47 PM
Da Cake Spott has been sitting there unopened for a very long time.
The banks are a big snooze. There's a WAMU down the street also. Pretty soon it'll be banks and sportsbars along the whole strip.

There is a need for a REAL ATM on that stretch. When I lived there, the street had nothing but ATMs and joints like that crappy check-cash store. I think it's a step in the right direction.

Bring back Mama Duke!
Posted by: guest at January 11, 2008 2:54 PM
It's like four steps in the right direction. Someone should open a gap and an urban outfitters too.
Posted by: guest at January 11, 2008 2:55 PM
snooze
Posted by: guest at January 11, 2008 3:02 PM
A gap would do wonders there.
Posted by: guest at January 11, 2008 3:03 PM
put in a brooks brothers and a DSW
Posted by: guest at January 11, 2008 3:03 PM
Never bring back Mama Duke! The food sucked. It was like they washed it after it was cooked. As for muggings, they go on now.Why do you think they would not increase now that they might get something more from the victim than an ipod.Just because some crime stats are hidden in police blotters in a local paper it does not mean that the area is crime free.
Posted by: guest at January 11, 2008 3:04 PM
Ever heard of cameras. 3:04?
Deters a lot of ATM thefts.
I don't believe anyone said there was zero crime in this area.
You need to pay attention.
This is a very busy corner. Even at night. Not the best area for muggings, but of course they do happen on occassion.

the 78th precinct is one block away at Bergen and 6th, so i can't imagine would-be robbers would consider this a prime spot to jack someone. there are often many police cars parked across Bergen from this spot, too.
as for banks/ATMs, i wouldn't mind a BofA here, but hope that it's not starting a wave of them.
Posted by: threecee at January 11, 2008 3:15 PM
Yes, I have heard of cameras 3:07, but cameras don't follow you. Muggers do.
Posted by: guest at January 11, 2008 3:16 PM
More professional business for the strip fewer baby bloggers.
Posted by: guest at January 11, 2008 3:19 PM
What the hell is a baby blogger?
Posted by: guest at January 11, 2008 3:21 PM
Muggings seem unlikely since that location pictured is literally steps from the police station. But maybe someone will reply,"You think muggings don't happen in front of the police station? Move back to the suburbs! Blah blah blah!"
Posted by: guest at January 11, 2008 3:21 PM
The cop killing some months back took place right at the other end of the block.Bergen and Flatbush.Right in the shadow of the 78th .

"Just because some crime stats are hidden in police blotters in a local paper it does not mean that the area is crime free."
This corner is as close to crime free as it gets. Cops are constantly in and out of Bergen Bagels, which is RIGHT NEXT DOOR. Cops park their cars and police vans directly across the (narrow) street. A crook is taking a big chance trying to pull off a mugging here, and if they cops caught him in the shadow their precinct trying to pul off a mugging, I'd be willing to wager they wouldn't be nice about it.

"The cop killing some months back took place right at the other end of the block.Bergen and Flatbush.Right in the shadow of the 78th ."
No, it took place on Sixth and St. Marks, at least 3-4 blocks away and across Flatbush Avenue from here. Definitely not "at the other end of the block." Get your facts straight.
Posted by: guest at January 11, 2008 3:27 PM
It was right by Bergen Tile.
Posted by: guest at January 11, 2008 3:31 PM
3:22 Do you mean this?

That was at Prospect and 6th. Or this at Dean and Flatbush?

Haven't you been listening to the what.
Banks aren't giving loans are are going into bankruptcy- so what is really opening is a pawn shop.
Posted by: guest at January 11, 2008 3:47 PM
the bank location is way to easy for a bandit to run down the station. by the time the lazy fat cops come, he'd be in the bronx.
Posted by: guest at January 11, 2008 4:26 PM
ATMs, police precincts, muggings, ipods, and subways stations will be worthless once AY is built.
Posted by: guest at January 11, 2008 4:52 PM
ain't fair that flatbush get all da goodies, IHOP woulda been great!
Posted by: guest at January 11, 2008 5:06 PM
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Posted by: guest at January 11, 2008 5:29 PM
Sure it's not Toronto? Seen it in a movie.
Posted by: guest at January 11, 2008 5:40 PM
I think it's a big zzzzzzzzzzzz. Wish it were the Gap, better yet, Baby Gap. As for crime, there was a hold-up at the Dunkin' Donuts right up the block at 5 p.m., and that there is a regular watering hole for cops. Also right near the 78th. Nothing deters a criminal hard-up for cash.

nothing except The What, packing heat, coming to your rescue on his way to the subway tunnel to spend the night.

Mama Duke may have sucked in the food department, but Diddy's mom ran it. So watch your mouth, son.
Posted by: guest at January 11, 2008 5:59 PM
Now we know why he's so skinny. It's like that when mom can't cook.
Posted by: guest at January 11, 2008 6:12 PM
Hah! You're my new brownstoner crush, 6:12pm. That is hilarious.
Posted by: guest at January 11, 2008 11:54 PM
is diddy actually that skinny? he seems to be a bit puffy to me (no pun intended). too much champagne.

J Lo has a Chinese aunt?

Unless I missed something, we're talking about an ATM. Has anyone ever looked at one of these? They're like 500 SF of space. Not exactly enough room for a gap or IHOP. Those are about 10-20 times bigger. No use losing any sleep over such a small space. That space had been vacant for like 2 years.
Posted by: guest at January 13, 2008 7:05 PM
How about an Apple store? If they can fit all 10,000 of my LPs on an iPod, they can fit in the former Mama Duke's!!!!!!
Posted by: guest at January 13, 2008 8:43 PM
How about a casino or a small bingo hall?
Posted by: guest at January 13, 2008 8:51 PM
has anyone that's freaking out about possible muggings spent time there or do you just assume b/c it's on flatbush it's dangerous? I'm in this area quite a lot and while it doesn't look like 5th Ave (yet - I'm sure it's coming) I feel perfectly safe. There are few banks in the area so while this seems like a waste of prime space and is boring as all hell, it is actually useful. I know it's not popular (and since my bank charges me for using other bank ATM's but not random deli ATM's I won't ever use it) but it's actually probably better for the neighborhood as it's a service rather than a trendy expensive store.
Posted by: guest at January 13, 2008 10:32 PM
truthfully, there aren't many muggings in this strip of Flatbush down to Dekalb. it's all rumors. a small space like this is ideal for a mom and pop store size, which is a dying breed. if you're a newbie, you might be reading a lot from bogus magazine news and hearsay. the heavy traffic and busy subway station make it more visible and much safer. Enough of those cutesy trendy stores, open up a bialy shop!
