Streetlevel: Yoga for the Outer-L Train Crowd

Yoga%20005.jpg
Yoginis of the Williamsburg hinterlands may lack some of the material blessings of their Bedford Avenue brethren, but starting soon they won't have to do without the spiritual and physical conveniences. Judging from the activity in the storefront of the architecturally-challenged building at 628 Metropolitan Avenue, a new yoga studio called Abhyasa will soon be joining other small business like Red Toe Nails boutique and Crest Hardware on this stretch of Metropolitan. As of this morning, Abhyasa's opening date was not posted and the paper in the windows blocked any view of the interior. Anyone know when we'll be able to start saluting the sun? GMAP

that building is a scar on the neighborhood. and it's huge. this is some kind of square footage scam right? because they were trying to rent doctor's offices in it forever.

That building makes me long for the clean lines and simple elegance of a Scarano or Fischer.

Also: Screw yoga.

Its time Mr. Brownstoner gets out of his blog bubble.

It's supposed to open February 1st and is being opened by J. Brown, who, from what he's said, is planning on focusing on a more therapeutic approach. I highly recommend him to anyone new to yoga or looking for the antithesis of power-yoga, gym yoga, and all of that kind of junk.

hey that silly balcony looks just like the "Castle in Astoria" nightmare (on Curbed?) Should do one of those comparisons, you know, with the big red arrows.

I live right by this studio. And I don't know how "outer L train" the Lorimer stop is, really.

Posted by: guest at January 18, 2008 10:29 AM

The outer L train stops are the ones beyond Broadway Junction.

Posted by: Flatbushwhacker at January 18, 2008 1:18 PM

outer L is silly. it's the second stop on the L - like 10 minutes to manhattan. very very close. mucher closer than PS, CH, CG, etc...

anyway, that area has been getting a lot of new places consistently for awhile.

it seems like a cool new yoga place, and i will check it out.

Psst...Red Toe Nails closed last week. Though there's a new boutique a couple of doors away.

The T-Mobile store between Lorimer and Union closed a month or two ago. Any word on what'll replace it? Dish the dirt!

Posted by: guest at January 20, 2008 12:36 PM

Does anyone know of any other yoga places near the Lorimer and Graham L stops that are good?

Posted by: guest at January 20, 2008 2:12 PM

Prices went up for this and it is expensive. Silly expensive for the neighborhood. If I wanted to pay $17 for a yoga class I wouldn't live on Metropolitan. And yes, this was the building zoned for a doctor's office and they put in a yoga studio as a community service location.

I have taken several classes at Abhyasa, and I find the price for a single class to be the norm for the neighborhood and the city, though multiple-class deals are really good at Abhyasa. The space inside is huge and beautiful, and surprisingly quiet for street-level Metropolitan Ave. It's much more convenient for me than the Bedford area (I live off Graham Ave.) I recommend this place for yoga practicioners of any level. Yay, a new business in the neighborhood that isn't a bar or a nail salon!

Greetings- J. Brown here, owner of Abhyasa Yoga center. Just wanted to let folks know that starting April 14th 2008 we will have reduced rate Community classes ($8) Mon.-Fri. 4-5:30 pm, and a Prenatal class on Wed. 12-1:30 pm. I'm doing my best to balance the demands of a small business with my desire to be of genuine use to the people of my neighborhood (I live around the corner on Skillman between Leonard and Manhattan.) I acknowledge that the building is a bit off but the landlord has done everything he said he would and finding an adequate space was not easy.
I invite everyone to come check it out for yourself. For more info on me and the center go to: abhyasayogacenter.com
