Streetlevel: Urban Rustic in North Burg

urbanrustic1207.jpg
On Friday, Williamsburgers who care about where their food comes from will have a new place to shop. A new space that harkens back to a small-town general store will open under the banner of Urban Rustic at 236 North 12th Street. The organic and sustainably-produced food (cheese, meat, vegetables, coffee and prepared foods) will be supplemented by in-store lectures and workshops all meant to create a sense of community around the 2,600-square-foot store. All the new condo owners on Bayard Street must be psyched.

people in w'burg don't care about food. They're too crass.

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 2:38 PM

I'm so happy I don't get lectures from my local grocery store.

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 2:42 PM

it all sounds silly to me!

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 2:51 PM

whatevs, I'm late for a dodgeball game, and my cameltoe and these tight kneesocks are killing me.

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 2:53 PM

It's so f*#king pretentious and annoying. Fits right in with the Williamsburg artistes and their collectives and salons, etc. It never ends.

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 2:53 PM

2:38 wtf? why the hostility? people in williamsburg don't care about food? the burg has extremely sophisticated food both in terms of restaurants and grocery stores and specialty shops. does your brooklyn neighborhood even have anything close to the 4 star/michelin star restaurant, dressler?

anyway, this place is not open yet, but you can see through the window. it's in a great location. just 2 doors down from the children's play room and amazing cafe, mamalu's, and right near all the new condo bldgs on mccarren park, union and roebling.

they will do well.

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 2:54 PM

This site should be called BitterHater.

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 2:58 PM

2:54 thinks he soooooo-fisticated.

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 2:59 PM

I don't know. Is Grocery rated well?

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 3:00 PM

Will they sell John Deere gimme caps?

what is wrong with everyone? a nice grocery store opens right where it's needed, so the obvious response is to piss on it?

this could be a site where people help each other benefit each neighborhood.

instead, this?

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 3:32 PM

"All the new condo owners on Bayard Street must be psyched."

If by 'psyched' you mean 'twats', then yes. Yes, they are.

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 3:37 PM

3:37pm

nice
yes if you notice a new lovely grocery store right near your apt, you don't get "psyched" you get "twated".

glad to see that your third grade education paid off for you.

you are able to insult people with nonsensical statements.

congrats.

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 3:46 PM

3:37 wins

the post should be shut down after that comment

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 3:46 PM

"oes your brooklyn neighborhood even have anything close to the 4 star/michelin star restaurant, dressler?"

Dressler received a star, not 4 stars.

1. Michelin does not give "4 stars"
2. There are only thee "3 star" Michelin restaurants in THE COUNTRY.
3. You don't know what your'e talking about

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 3:50 PM

dressler is a great restaurant (a 4 star - it's a saying), but yes, of course it only received one michelin star.

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 3:57 PM

3:46

not sure what you are saying.

does 3:37 comments annoy you? or, are you also running down anyone who bought on Bayard? (fyi, i did not, but not a fan of criticizing people)

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 3:58 PM

hey 3:46-

3:37 was taking advantage of the fact that in the English language, when an adjective (e.g.,'psyched') is the object of the the third person plural form of the verb 'to be', it can be switched out with a plural noun, and still create a grammatical and sensical sentence.

Oh yeah, and they were funny.

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 3:59 PM

oh, thee's absolutely NOTHING pretentious going on in Brownstoner land. Assmunching fuckwipe.

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 5:01 PM

5:01- you're in brownstonerland

That's an awesonme epithet you just threw out, though. Gotta give you that. Lotta venom today on this post. Not sure why.

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 5:07 PM

5:01

think people actually get mad when something nice opens that isn't in their neighborhood.

they've torn down the paper now, and this place looks really really good.

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 5:17 PM

On behalf of the guys opening this place, this is a direct quote from their introductory email:
"We've built this place with our own hands from trees we cut down. Every inch of the place is our baby."
They are not pretentious, or crass, or any of the other silly adjectives people have been using to jump to conclusions about them. They are thoughtful and creative, and really excited to support both their neighborhood, and the local farmers.
I don't understand the quick to judge mentality about something that seems to be nothing but GOOD...
Even in their mission statements they call it a "labor of love", so why can't everyone just appreciate it as just that?

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 5:30 PM

"Trees we cut down"? To build a freaking hipster grocery store in Williamsburg, where I will be lectured about organics and local food and god knows what else?

I miss yesterday's Brooklyn Heights/Goldman Sachs thread. Sigh...

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 5:36 PM

what's hipster about a grocery store?

think these people are too old and too serious...

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 5:40 PM

5:30

thank you. excellent post. brownstoner should be about recognizing wonderful people like these store owners.

congratulations to them.

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 5:42 PM

What trees? Looks like glass and brick to me.

Perhaps they are being secretly ironic?

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 5:42 PM

Wood used for floors, shelves, and counters.... no irony there.

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 5:49 PM

the real test will be the pricing of the produce...organic usually means more expensive, at least in the markets around me. not to mention the rent they have to be paying..a big baby needs a big stroller...

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 5:49 PM

... sounds to me like the yuppies over in Wanker Gardens are all frustrated that their contractors didn't show up yet again this morning.

ching ching!

ha!

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 5:59 PM

This neighborhood is in the continuing process of getting destroyed by yuppies.

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 6:22 PM

english slang (like a true hipstard)

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 6:22 PM

"This neighborhood is in the continuing process of getting destroyed by yuppies."

YES! Damn them and their fresh produce!

Don't they know the definition of a true unspoilt neighborhood means buying crappy veggies at a shady bodega?!?

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 6:35 PM

because artist hipsters are "better" than yuppies, right?

Posted by: guest at December 12, 2007 7:10 PM

You're not dreaming you're in brownstoner land!

Posted by: guest at December 13, 2007 7:48 AM

i have nothing but respect for these guys at urban rustic. it looks like they have a great product and are sincere in their efforts to improve the neighborhood and offer a unique product. i live in the area and that is exactly what we needed - now we won't be running to bedford to buy crappy overpriced bodega groceries. hopefully the place won't become too crowded it's got a great location and it was a no brainer to put a market/cafe there.

to all the naysayers on this site you are absolutely pathetic. wallow in your negativity and hatred all you want - and enjoy dropping four bucks for a can of pringles in some roach-infested deli as you stumble home to your crapball rental.

christ it's not like they put a starbucks in there, assholes.

Posted by: guest at December 14, 2007 8:53 AM

I've been looking forward to the opening for a while now since I live around the block. Upon running out for some emergency milk this morning all I can say is these people have some huge balls. They are charging $4.50 (+$1 deposit) for a bottle of milk that costs $2 from the farmers market. I understand a certain amount of markup will happen when you buy from someone like this, but come on thats insane!

Posted by: guest at December 14, 2007 11:21 AM

The tuna is niiiiiiiiiiiice! (in Borat accent)

Posted by: guest at December 14, 2007 2:31 PM

$4.50 for milk.. and all the money they saved chopping their own trees, sheesh..it wont be overcrowded 8:53, you are safe.
