Streetlevel: Tribeca Pediatrics Expands to Boerum Hill

tribecapedBoerum1.jpg
What does it say about Brooklyn demographics when a successful pediatric practice named after a Manhattan neighborhood has more locations in Brooklyn? Such is the case with Tribeca Pediatrics, which opened its new Boerum Hill location last Monday at 250 Dean Street on the heels of opening a Williamsburg location earlier this year. The original office was opened in 1994 on Warren Street in Tribeca by Dr. Michel Cohen. (Full disclosure: The Brownstoner brood currently goes to the Williamsburg office.)

the Brooklyn Heights office was first to open, years before Williamsburg. But I think that practice is now de-associating from the chain.

wow - just checked the website and that appears to be true. That sucks because Boerum Hill is so much closer to us, but I do like Dr. Dehovitz at the BH office and feel guilty abandoning her....

Posted by: guest at December 10, 2007 3:02 PM

oh great. not enough with chain drug stores, coffee outlets, fast food...now we have chain MDs offices
(as well as those obnoxious new dentist companies).

Posted by: guest at December 10, 2007 3:03 PM

why would you abandoned her? I like Dehovitz too and I'm sticking with her -- no matter what name on front says

Posted by: guest at December 10, 2007 3:21 PM

What does is say? It says Brooklyn has an inferiority complex and will always be the red-headed stepchild.

Posted by: guest at December 10, 2007 3:38 PM

I was hoping there would be a deli or something that stays open late nights..a little disappointed to discover it's a pediatrics place.

Posted by: guest at December 10, 2007 3:42 PM

I would abandon her just to avoid the long walks to BH. I don't give a hoot about the name of the practice - in fact, I can't stand Michele Cohen, even though I find him unbelievably handsome....

Well, considering the breeding rate in NYC, pediatrics is a great racket. Cha-ching!

Posted by: guest at December 10, 2007 3:46 PM

Completely agree about Michel Cohen and the annoyingness that is Tribeca Pediatrics. Why the need to expand so much? I really like Jana Dehovitz and am thrilled she is splintering off.

Posted by: guest at December 10, 2007 3:52 PM

The reality is that it is a successful practice because they have a great staff and a philosophy that is closely aligned with a lot of new parents. The name is secondary, but there is no denying the power of branding.

Posted by: guest at December 10, 2007 3:54 PM

the reality is they are successful because they accept new patients even if it means taxing their system. Pytlak and O'Connor stopped accepting new patients and Tribeca got the run-off. Now Dehovitz is saying 'enough' and delisting from this puppy mill.

But how do thy feel about veganism? Are the against vaccinations? Anti-circumcision? Pro-Family bed?

I grew up going to Dr. Thornhill on St. James or was it Cambridge, and Greene. He was $10 per visit for at least 18 yrs. Loved Dr. Thornhill!

Posted by: guest at December 10, 2007 4:51 PM

I would take my children there just because the building is so damned gorgeous.

Posted by: guest at December 10, 2007 4:52 PM

Dr. Jennings in Prospect Lefferts was only $5 per visit. Less than a co-pay today. But I guess he must've died about 25 years ago. Anybody remember Dr. Jennings?

Posted by: guest at December 10, 2007 5:26 PM

Dr Jennings was cheaper than Dr Thornhill? This can't be!

Posted by: guest at December 10, 2007 6:08 PM

I remember Dr Jennings, who lived on my block of Midwood Street. Unfortunately, he had retired from practice by the time my son was born in '82.

taking our daughter to the williamsburg location. it's a beautiful office and it's pretty easy right now to get an appointment although that might change. we've had a really great experience there. i am so much happier now with her care.

This space used to be a deli that was awful. Peditrician is a good plus improved use of the space.

I don't care for the "brownstoner broad" terminology, however lightly meant.

Posted by: guest at December 10, 2007 9:12 PM

You nitwit, it says "brownstoner brood" - i.e., the kids not the wife.

Although I've heard good things about Dr. DeHovitz personally, we had a bad experience with Tribeca peds in Bklyn Heights (saw a newer associate there). Felt they were pushing unnecessary procedures on us with our newborn (!), who'd seen 3 previous (seasoned) pediatricians out of state with no similar anxieties. We've since switched to Marty Finkleman in Bklyn Heights - very happily. While the new Tribeca Pediatrics office is only a block away from our home, we'll keep schlepping the mile and a half to him because he seems like the better doc.

Glaser on 8th Ave. is ok but I love, love, love my pediatric dentist Dr. Reyes at One Hanson Place.

Posted by: guest at December 11, 2007 8:11 AM

This is a great addition to the neighborhood and they have done a wonderful job of updating the interior while maintaining the traditional exterior. Jane Jacobs would of been proud of the entire package...btw there is a little cafe around the corner (Nevins and Bergen) and someone recently mentioned a rumor about the corner place at Bond and Pacific turning into a cafe. Bravo!

Any word on what types of insurance that practice takes?

Tribeca pediatrics is a good practice if there is nothing seriously wrong with your child. we learned that the hard way. image counts for very little when it comes to the health and safety of your child.
