Wednesday Food & Drink Round-Up
Closing: Donuts Coffee Shop
"The much loved Donuts Coffee Shop on Fifth Avenue at Union in Park Slope is in its final days. Its space will soon be consumed by the Associated Supermarket next door, along with the storefront that had been occupied by the shuttered Beso...It's due to close by the end of December." [Gowanus Lounge]
Now Open: IHOP in Downtown Brooklyn
276 Livingston Street (Corner of Bond Street)
"An anticipated International House of Pancakes that opened in downtown Brooklyn to a swarm of hungry flapjack fanatics Tuesday is owned by a hip-hop producer behind Foxy Brown and Mary J. Blige... As lunchtime crowds converged into the 4,900-square-foot batter behemoth, all but a few customers left happy, with some predicting the area's newest addition would soon compete with Junior's and other local standbys." [NY Daily News]
Another Opening: Peter's Since 1969
168 Bedford Avenue (North Seventh Street), Williamsburg; (718) 388-2811
"A former butcher shop has been turned into a bistro that cooks chickens on a French rotisserie. Other dishes are macaroni and cheese, corn bread, yellow rice, and even sausage and sauerkraut stew. You may bring your own wine and beer." [NY Times]
Chowhounders debate the best burgers in Park Slope, Gothamist reveals big plans for Sweet Melissa, and the Times hits up Radegast Hall and Biergarten...
Big Plans for Melissa Murphy
Sweet Melissa already has three locations in Park Slope and Carroll Gardens, and Executive Chef Melissa Murphy has plans to expand: "I am at this very moment negotiating a warehouse space in the neighborhood where I will relocate my Central production kitchen. It is 6200 square feet; we currently have about 1000 square feet. The new space has room for offices and enormous production capabilities. I want to maximize the stores that I have (we are adding a beer and wine license to both locations, and are creating a menu that compliments that)... All of this is being done so we can move forward with opening more stores when the time is right." [Gothamist]
Park Slope's Best Burger?
Chowhounders have been debating this topic for years, and one recent comment says: "This is the GOLDEN AGE for Hamburgers on Fifth Avenue in Park Slope; some day our children, and our children's children, will long discuss the unsurpassed burger delights on this famed avenue, long after these restaurants have been replaced by banks." Favorite burgers include those served at 200 Fifth, Bonnie's Grill, Blue Ribbon, Cocotte, Belleville, and Stone Park Cafe.
Plenty o' Beer at Radegast Hall and Biergarten
113 North Third Street (Berry Street), Williamsburg; (718) 963-3973
"There are 13 varieties on tap — all available by the pint ($7), liter ($13) and pitcher ($18) — and dozens more in bottles ($6 to $9). If you’re hankering for domestic beer this isn’t the spot, but the list has plenty of easy-drinking European selections, be they Czech (like BrouCzech), German (Gaffel Kölsch, anyone?) or Austrian (why drink wasser when you can drink Gösser?)" Oh here we go....
"the much beloved Coffee shop" is closing - revisionist history. The Coffee shop was not much beloved by many people (virtually always near empty), nor did it have especially good food.
All it had was a cool retro sign and a classic (read: outdated) interior
- area needs a large supermarket and they can pay more then a not-so-successful coffee shop.
Nostalgia is nice but please keep it in perspective

ive never seen the donuts coffee shop open. I would have ate there but it was always closed.
also IHOP is not good food

i literally walk by that donut shop ALL THE TIME.
never once, did i see it open for business.
and the decline of the mom and pop continues....mostly due to poor and inadequate hours, if you ask me.

IHOP? Bring on the obesity.
Posted by: guest at December 19, 2007 11:39 AM
What are you guys talking about? I used to go to the donut shop all the time.
Posted by: guest at December 19, 2007 11:43 AM
you must have happened upon it for the 45 minutes a day it's open.

The Times review of Radegast is annoying. Nothing against Peter Meehan, but I wish they'd have people who know something about beer review beer halls. Gaffel Kolsch is one of the biggest and most boring German brands, and was on tap at every dive on the Lower East Side this summer. Every other German beer they have on tap is more special than Gaffel, though still available plenty of other places. BrouCzech is basically Czech Budweiser, and you can get it at delis in Astoria. Frustrating. Sorry to geek out on you all, but bar reviews always make it seem like any bar that carries something other than Coors is a beer wonderland. Still can't wait to check out Radegast, though.

I actually thought it closed down last year.

How about this menu for a hypothetical restaurant on Smith Street?

Nice to know Foxy's doing something with her money. I will be there just for the pancakes and flavored syrup....hate the location.

Wooohoo, IHOP! The upscale-ification of downtown Brooklyn continues apace!

The donut shop closing is clearly a sign that park slope sucks. Put that crappy food and service and sporadic scheduling in any number of other nabes and there is a line out the door. Park Slope just jumped the shark.

Me, am going to IHOP now to try their latest carb offerings with lots of Butterworth corn syrup with a little bacon. Hm hm hmm. Can't walk well, but i'll git there. Then I'll bring home some for dinner.
Posted by: guest at December 19, 2007 1:21 PM
What sporadic scheduling? It's open in the morning and through lunch time. And I think it's closed on Sunday. That's hardly "sporadic." The food may not be great, but the service is -- they're always extremely friendly.

Sweet Melissa's has great food, and really crappy service. One time a friend and I waited so long for the wait staff to reappear in the back garden so we could get our check, that we just got feed up, and walked out w/o paying. I think we might have passed one of the AWOL staff on the way out, but no one said anything, so we just kept walking.

1:22 is correct. If you lazy Park Slopers managed to roll your doughy asses out of bed before noon you would know this. I loved that place. Nice people, good conversations, bad coffee.

If closing Donuts results in a better grocery store, I'm all for it. The grocery stores in PS are terrible. For those who don't have the time to work at the Co-Op, a bigger Associated might be a nice thing.

"The grocery stores in PS are terrible."
Steve's C-Town on 9th Street rocks.
Posted by: guest at December 19, 2007 5:21 PM
i love people who say park slope is over because one donut shop which was opened 10 hours a week is closing.
park slope has more retail, restaurants and shops than all the other brownstone neighborhoods combined.
it can stand to lose a couple.
especially when that means improving one of the few nicer grocery stores in the neighborhood.
c town is great, but not convenient if you live in the north slope.

"c town is great, but not convenient if you live in the north slope."
Agreed. I was just countering the rather broad accusation that "The grocery stores in PS are terrible."

Except that the donut shop was there before I moved to park slope in 1978....so it is a sad loss of a beloved shop...glad the newbies are happy...i will miss the donut shop. I remember a few hung over mornings with nothing more in my mind then some greasy eggs and bad coffee from that very donut shop...but the donuts were good and the company impecable....There goes Brooklyn....don't you people get it!
