Never-Been-Used Viking Appliances at Build It Green

The range of items you can find in the warehouse of Astoria-based Build It Green! is wide, with everything from droolworthy 19th Century moldings to modern-day hollow-core doors that would get laughed at in any House of the Day post. We scored some beautiful vintage marble there that we turned into countertops. Now, we noticed, the website is touting some brand-new viking appliances at 30 percent off. Any label-conscious kitchen renovators out there?

FWIW Viking refrigerators have had terrible reliability reports, centering around the defrosting mechanism. Perhaps that design defect's been cleared up by now, perhaps not.

Hey Brownstoner, I hope that vintage marble didn't come from the house on Sterling Place.

Damn, those things are huge. Unless you have a large family, why make Con Ed richer?
Not for me, thanks.

Yea 4000 is a good deal if it list for 9000. But why would someone donate this?? Very confusing.

Why would someone donate this? Why would someone donate a perfectly functioning car? I suspect it went something like this. Overpaid banker plans gut renovation of apartment just purchased for $10 million. Wife Buffy sees the "Viking" appliances brought in for the kitchen. Oh no, says Buffy, those middle class appliance just won't do, I simply must have Sub-Zero, because nothing else possibly could suffice to keep my mineral water at just the right price. And, at such time as someone might wish to use the kitchen (aghast, certainly not me), Buffy says, you must have a Sub Zero for whatever it is one might use a kitchen for.
Hence, barks the banker, round up those Vikings and get them out of here. But, responds contractor, we can't take them back. Doesn't matter, retorts the banker, donate them somewhere.
Alas, a Viking is born in Queens.

Vikings are crappy! I bought a whole line for my kitchen and so far, the only thing that hasn't broken down is the range. The microwave caught on fire. Yes, caught on fire, twice. Finally, after using it for almost 4 years, we have had to replace. We don't abuse it either. I promise you. The ice maker has died on us twice too. Don't buy this stuff. Save your money.
