Introducing Gowanus, the Condo

the-gowanus-condo-rendering-12-07.jpg
Does the rendering above signal that Gowanus has suddenly become marketable? The building in question is the under-construction 255 1st Street (see photo on jump), which was designed by Steven Kratchman Architect, the firm that had a hand in designing Chelsea Piers. It's entirely possible that the building's name has changed since the rendering was produced, but we're fascinated by the fact that the developers would name a condo between 4th and 5th avenues (in Park Slope!) after the canal/industrial neighborhood. The condo will have three one-bedrooms, 16 two-bedrooms and 13 three-bedrooms, and it's supposed to hit the market soon. GMAP DOB P*Shark

All I see when I read "Gowanus" is "anus". Sorry...

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 1:09 PM

smart move with the three bedrooms.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 1:10 PM

I prefer the
"Fuhgedaboudit"

Who will ever want to say:
Oh, I live in the Gowanus!

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 1:10 PM

Gowanus is going to be what the meatpacking district never was.

Edgy and hip for more than 5 minutes.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 1:12 PM

Looks like Gowanus is trying to distance itself from the obnoxious residents of "Park Slope Proper"

Good call!!

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 1:14 PM

I think 1:14 that they are trying to ride the coat tails of the Park Slope real estate market, actually.

Without Park Slope, there is no Gowanus.

Every story has another side...

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 1:17 PM

Without Park Slope and Carroll Gardens, there is no Gowanus.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 1:24 PM

I remember the talk about making Fourth Avenue the Park Avenue of Brooklyn. That rezoning was such a joke - this building is only 11 stories tall!

Posted by: Polemicist at December 21, 2007 1:25 PM

Yeah, that's why they are calling it the Gowanus and not "the slope"

You park slopers are so snarky. you would never believe some people don't want to live amongst obnoxious people obsessed with crown moldings and fireplaces.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 1:25 PM

"Who will ever want to say: Oh, I live in the Gowanus!"

They can always say, "I live behind the McDonalds."

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 1:25 PM

Without Park Slope and Carroll Gardens - just imagine how much better everything would be

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 1:27 PM

@ 1:25

Some people might say the same thing about Brooklyn as a whole.

Different strokes for different folks.

Where do you live? I might not be proud to call that my home.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 1:28 PM

Dear Mr. Brownstoner,

Could you please make a seperate site for the Park Slopers so we won't have to deal with their attitudes and "why pay 700K for a brownstone in CH when you can get one in PS for 3 million!"

Enough is enough

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 1:30 PM

"you would never believe some people don't want to live amongst obnoxious people obsessed with crown moldings and fireplaces."

but that's why your point is so completely absurd.

they WILL be living among the dreaded slopers. this is right smack in park slope proper.

you don't seem to be able to make a point that makes sense.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 1:30 PM

I have a great idea for a "water feature" in the lobby...

A little canal, with a bridge for residents to cross over. Oil slicks, plastic dead koi floating, mysterious bubbles.

Maybe they could bring in those smell experts from Vegas and pipe in the appropriate manufactured aromas.

Posted by: Rehab at December 21, 2007 1:31 PM

Rehab, you forgot the STDs, especially the live syphilis that was recently found in the canal.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 1:35 PM

Since when is 1st street and 4th ave park slope proper?

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 1:37 PM

small minded thinking like those that never thought the meatpacking district would ever be a hip neighborhood with blood and pig guts streaming down the streets and now look at it.

have some vision people.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 1:37 PM

most of the typical snobby/liberal park slope people I have met bought their brownstones for very little in the 80's.

The snobs have been there for 20. The new rich people are a small cross section that have moved in over the last 5 years.

Posted by: Santa at December 21, 2007 1:38 PM

is there a particular reason for all this bitterness or is it just human nature.

it's just a name, could have been The Majestic. Doesn't have to mean anything really...

I live near a place called "The Barbara". Believe me - not a single Barbara in sight.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 1:38 PM

I don't find people in Park Slope any snobbier than people on the Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Tribeca, Ft. Greene, or Brooklyn Heights.

What is wrong with you people?

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 1:43 PM

Let's face it, South Slope is not Park Slope. Sunset park?

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 1:47 PM

i currently live in park slope and love it. I happen to find that many older residence talk the most crap about the neighborhood when they are themselves transplants who bought in during the late 80's early 90's

kinda silly and i was just pointing that out. Park Slope is no different than anywhere else in NYC. People need to point a finger to make themselves feel better.

Posted by: Santa at December 21, 2007 1:47 PM

Everyday, same old, same old!! Somebody always brings up the PS hatred. People... Get real, it is just a feckin name.. This is BROOKLYN... Who gives a toss whether it is PS, CH, BS.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 1:48 PM

what's the story with the project immediately to the east that has gone nowhere for what seems forever?

Posted by: BrooklynLove at December 21, 2007 1:50 PM

What's the difference between gray and black ink comments on this site? I see two tones.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 1:50 PM

Or FG and DB.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 1:51 PM

People who log in with a user ID have their comments show up in black--it's supposed to convey more authority and trustworthiness. Whether it actually does is another matter.

Posted by: brownstoner at December 21, 2007 1:53 PM

grey posts are guests and black are signed up.

Posted by: Santa at December 21, 2007 1:54 PM

It seems out to me that people such as "white and proud in plg" who have black ink would convey more authority or trustworthiness.

they are made up names which are not censored as far as i can tell.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 1:55 PM

Gray - Guests, Black - Members. Is that racist?? maybe we could all moan about that?

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 1:56 PM

Black are people who log in with a user ID, Grey are often trolls who's sole purpose in life is to stir crap, wind people up and generally bring on the hatred.

Wait a minute, I'm also grey :-()

"Since when is 1st street and 4th ave park slope proper?"

1st street between 4th and 5th has been park slope proper for some time now.

park slope proper is anthing east of 4th avenue including the east side of that avenue.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 2:18 PM

Does anyone knwo what the prices will be on these?

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 2:24 PM

I like that building -- at least its rendering. As for the hipness or not of the Gowanus area, I think it's hip for people who live near -- but not too near -- the eponymous body of "water." Now that I walk by it every weekday, I think not. But still, it's a fairly nice looking building on what will be a very, very dull avenue.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 2:27 PM

Call me crazy, but you know it would be fun to respond to the question, "where do you live?" with this answer; "I live in the Gowanus."

When I moved to NYC 13+ years ago, my buddy wanted to move to the building named "The Future," just so he could say, "I live in The Future."

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 2:36 PM

This looks like a nice building. I like the name. I also like this site and all of you. You are my best friends.

Posted by: BrooklynLove at December 21, 2007 2:46 PM

I take it this is the last post for today?

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 2:47 PM

All this thread's missing is:

- someone proclaiming the building "Fugly."
- someone proclaiming that poster "Fugly."
- someone saying it will be worthless when AY is built.
- The actual What posting something.
- The actual What posting as someone pretending to be The What.
- Someone calling out as pathetic the person who calls everyone else out as pathetic.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 2:48 PM

Without Park Slope, Brooklyn, NYC, NY, USA, North America, Earth, Galaxy, Universe there is no existence.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 2:51 PM

"it's supposed to convey more authority and trustworthiness"

If that is the aim, there are serious flaws. However it does create a trail of commentary which allows users to project an idealogical composite of the poster.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 2:56 PM

"I happen to find that many older residence talk the most crap about the neighborhood when they are themselves transplants who bought in during the late 80's early 90's"
History note for this rather uninformed poster.
During that period the Crown Heights riots and the murder of Yusef Hawkins occurred. Race relations were poor and the mayor was unpopular with many. There was a nasty recession - there were empty storefronts and many people talked about or did actually leave the city. There was the same kind of feeling of downward spiral as during the fiscal crisis in the 70's. I may be naive but I am surprised how uninformed new residents are about relatively recent history in Broolyn.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 3:21 PM

Only a very sleazy realtor, or someone who has been hoodwinked by one, would think that 1st Street and 4th Avenue is "Park Slope Proper."

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 3:31 PM

Don't worry 3:21 that rug was fugly anywayz.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 3:32 PM

someone should get The What a Santa style asshat.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 3:34 PM

For those who don't seem to know where Park Slope is....3:31

"Park Slope is a neighborhood in the western section of Brooklyn, New York City's most populous borough. Park Slope is roughly bounded by Prospect Park West to 4th Avenue, Park Place to the Greenwood Cemetery according to the New York City Department of City Planning"

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 3:35 PM

I don't care whether it's "Park Slope Proper," "Gowanus Improper," or "Bumfuck Shutthefuckup." What I want to know is how that jackass put a 12 story building ON 1st street. May it forever reek of McDonald's.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 3:35 PM

and another source:

Boundaries: Stretching from Prospect Park West to 4th Avenue, Park Place to Prospect Expressway.

4th avenue is most certainly in Park Slope proper...whether you like it or not is a whole different story.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 3:42 PM

For years, many people have been saying that they live in "Gowanus." The projects in Boerum Hill are called "Gowanus."

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 5:24 PM

they just redid the mcd's on 9th street between 5th and 4th.

wow.

didn't know a mcdonalds could look so classy.

seriously.

i don't set foot in that place, but whatever they did certainly looks nice.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 6:25 PM

Park slope has a Mcdonalds. Yummy. I love buying my fat girlfriend a big mac and fries and then watching her eat it and seeing the juice running down her face. Double Yummy. This wiil be even better when I live in the Gowanus for 800,000 2 bedroom 2 bath. Good thing too cause She usually takes a really long time in the bathroom after eating Mickey D"S.. I like them big bootys.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 6:44 PM

I am proud to live in Gowanus - All of you PS jealous haters can suck it!

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 7:01 PM

All this McDonald's talk has got me craving a cheeseburger. You people suck.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 7:28 PM

Brownstoner is like The Warriors, with Park Slope yuppies. So territorial. Let's rumble after the playdates.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 7:51 PM

Are Park Slopers the guys that eat McDs on the train, make the whole car smell like deep fries at 11am and leave garbage on the seats?

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 8:16 PM

Carroll Gardens =Great Nabe Park Slope=great nabe Gowanas= soon to be great nabe.

Posted by: guest at December 21, 2007 8:59 PM

wtf is with the term "park slope proper"? a while back PS used to be thought of as 5th ave to PP, flatbush to 9th st. is that what that's supposed to mean?

12/21 @ 3:00 - i hear you. the crack epidemic as well was especially tough on portions of crown heights and prospect heights.

park slope was not immune either. my friend's mom was held up at gunpoint at 4 in the afternoon while opening her front door on one of those "prime park slope" blocks. and one night someone got shot in the head around the corner from our block. and i remember seeing people smoking crack in the phone booth by key food on 7th ave. and i remember seeing someone shot dead in the street right over by the wsb building. there are more anecdotes. this was the 1980s.

i don't think that you'll find people who were around at that time trolling this site, making jokes about gunfire in crown heights, lefferts gardens, etc. maybe it's that type of insensitive crap that gets the 1970/80s people a bit salty.

Posted by: BrooklynLove at December 21, 2007 9:10 PM

6:44, you sound like a dipshit. Everyone knows McD's food contains NO juice. It's barely even meat anymore. So what's dripping down your girl's chin...?

Posted by: guest at December 22, 2007 8:04 AM

Hey 7:01--I'll take a pass on sucking "it," since with all that toxic soil you live on has probably infested your "it" with all kids of disease. Viva Gowanus!

Posted by: guest at December 22, 2007 8:09 AM

WOW what a hideous building.

Posted by: guest at December 22, 2007 9:13 AM

NABE WAR!

by the way, Park Slop sucks gowANUS

Posted by: guest at December 22, 2007 9:16 AM

Yeah I said it, "Park Slop", that's what you people are, a bunch of baby pushing pigs shopping at your Food Co-op, driving your pig Prius and breast feeding your piglets at Two Boots.

Posted by: guest at December 22, 2007 9:22 AM

Park Slope SUVs and volvo driving libs stay away from the 4th Av GowAnus section of Bklyn. It's icky. We still love to haul our designer twin strollers, dominate the streets, and hang out with moms at the Tea Lounge. Been here ten years and believe we're entitled to the good things we built. So pls we don't need your complaints and trash to 7th Ave.

Posted by: guest at December 22, 2007 4:00 PM

F*cking Park Slope breeders and their repulsive crotch fruit. Planned Parenthood ought to offer discount abortions to everyone in PS.

Posted by: guest at December 22, 2007 4:20 PM

This is one of the sickest threads on this blog. I don't live in Park Slope or Gowanus, or even Brooklyn, yet. I can't believe how immature and aggressive you sick fucks really are. You must all be around 15-16 years old, no? I can't imagine that mature adults would write about their own AND other neighborhoods in this way.

Posted by: guest at December 22, 2007 5:28 PM

I agree that this nabe-bashing is incredibly stupid and boring.

But I have to give it up for the description of children as "repulsive crotch fruit."

Nice.

Posted by: guest at December 22, 2007 6:44 PM

"crotch fruit" is as old as your crotch, 6:44

Posted by: guest at December 22, 2007 7:10 PM

"F*cking Park Slope breeders and their repulsive crotch fruit. Planned Parenthood ought to offer discount abortions to everyone in PS."

Not a parent, nor a Park Sloper. However, have you not noticed that there are "breeders" and "crotch fruit" in increased numbers ALL OVER NYC? I live in Stuy Town and it's one big nursery. Every Manhattan and Brooklyn neighborhood I visit is overflowing with strollers and youngish-parents. Get over your hate.

Posted by: guest at December 22, 2007 7:28 PM

Yeah, agreed 7:28...nyc has more of a family vibe now cause there's about 500% fewer people smokin crack and shootin dope than there were in the late 80's / early 90's - a little more conducive to raising a family.

Posted by: guest at December 22, 2007 7:55 PM

To poster 2:48 I think it is completely pathetic that you already know all the comments people make on this stupid site by heart before they write them. And for Mr. Brownstoner to day that people whose reply comes up in darker type makes them seem more authoritative or legit blow it out your ass.

Posted by: guest at December 22, 2007 8:28 PM

yes, all those losers falling in love and getting married and having children. god, isn't it great to be loathed and unable to find a decent relationship.

too bad your mother didn't abort you you crotch fruit 4:20.

good luck in the future although i bet you don't survive the holidays in your solitude.

May all your children die of SIDs.

Happy New Year!!!

Posted by: guest at December 23, 2007 8:25 AM

Park Slope is altogether too proper. As for the geography, they have maps on the lamp posts--of the Landmark District known as Park Slope. Sorry dudes, 1st Street between 4th and 5th Avenues isn't even close.

As for the SIDS well-wisher, I second the motion!

Posted by: guest at December 23, 2007 12:28 PM

Sick, truly sick. Anyone wishing death, SIDs, and abortions on people, even in jest, is truly fucked in the head.
