Closing Bell: Rooftop Action at Ingersoll-Whitman

whitmanroof1.jpg
Anyone know what's happening on the roof of this building on the Ingersoll-Whitman housing complex at the corner of Myrtle and Ashland? Are they extending the stairwell in anticipation of adding another floor to the building, as per Robert Sacarano's recommendations from a couple of years ago? Or maybe they're just repairing the bulkhead.

Hopefully preparing it for implosion, but that's not likely.

This thread is making my head hurt. These are the PJs -- right? They're not near any brownstones to speak of. Fort Greene Park is across the street, and otherwise they are surrounded by a labyrinthe of other housing projects. What's all this biz about Decatur and Bed-Stuy? These are smack in FG, the nether end, cut off by the BQE.

What's everyone talking about?

Wouldn't the apartments below need to be emptied if any additional floors were being added?!!! 'Would imagine they'd have started by welding/riveting on steel posts and girders if floors were being added.

It's part of the same major renovation project that's been underway for over a year now. In this instance building an elevator machine room bulkhead to install a new elevator that services all floors. Some of the buildings had the old elevators that only stopped on every other floor, with the machine room on the top floor (as opposed to a level above on the roof). So, for example, if you lived on the 5th floor, you'd take the elevator to 6 and walk down a flight when comming home or, conversely, walk down to 4 to take it to the lobby.

The elevators stop only at every other floor?
Why do I believe this instantly?
How perfect!
Public housing projects with elevators that stop more or less on your floor.
Of course it means that now, our tax dollars have to be spent to build a whole new elevator.
meanwhile, I hate to rub this in, walk up apartments in Park Slope are selling for over a million dollars. The fine ladies and
gents who buy those apartments are going to have to lug the same groceries and the same strillers up all those stairs. NYC is a laugh riot, I never cease to be amused!

There are many handicapped and elderly residents. They are literally trapped in their homes while the elevators are broken. I have heard horror stories about this at the FGA meeting. Some on this site might not agree that poor people's concerns are relevant to the neighborhood. But the great majority of Fort Greene residents and their elected officials disagree. They are an integral part of the area. Don't go bragging about diversity to your hommies back at your white collar job and then ignoring the reality here.

The poor folks in these dumps of buildings were lied to by liberal NY politicians who told them to forget about the American dream of striving for a better life and instead just accept this freebie from the government and remember to vote Democrat.
What a shameful legacy.
People who could have been something trapped in a pseudo-Socialist political game.
I don't blame the folks I blame the politicians and the wealthy bigots who finance their campaigns and expect all the dark folks to be kept in their reservations in far off places like brooklyn and bronx.
