Closing Bell: Beautiful in Bushwick

346Lorimer1107.jpg
We went for a little driving tour around Bushwick a couple of weeks ago. The highlight of the day was undoubtably this little two-story brick treasure that feels like a carriage house but, judging from the original arched windows and arched lintels (is that the right term?), it never was. A Google search suggests that it's currently the headquarters for an elevator company but the building appears to be part of a larger parcel that includes an empty lot to the left of the building. According to PropertyShark, the property was purchased a year ago for $1,600,000, a price that suggests the new owners are going to do more than just sit on it. If that's the case, let's hope they have they have mercy on this building. GMAP P*Shark

I looked at this when Massey Knakal had it about a year ago. The building was very small but on a large lot. Didn't know how to make it work without terring it down.

looks great. love the graffiti. who in their right mind would buy in Bushwick? Who bought this will lose a lot of money.

seems more williamsburg than bushwick, but i don't really know north brooklyn all that well. anyway, cute building.

Dear Stoner,
Architectural History 101:
In historic buildings there are two basic ways of spanning a wall opening: a lintel or an arch, also know as trabeated and arcuated.
The trabeated system (think parthenon) uses straight lintels to span across openings or columns. The arcuated system (think the colosseum) uses arches to span.
Therefore there is no such thing as an arched lintel. By definition that is an arch.
So all you have to say is that you really dig the arches over the windows.
You're welcome, any time.

well... if it's a large property that can be built on, a rental or condo building will make money.

one bedrooms are now going for a lot of money in williamsburg - going to see one tonight with my cousin, he's looking to move to williamsburg - it's $2900...

so, younger renters are being pushed in to bushwick.

if i had spare cash ( i do not ) i would be buying property to rent all over that area or east williamsburg.

that looks like south williamsburg, not bushwick.

That looks like Montrose Ave and either Leonard or Lorimer. Pretty far west of Flushing. I would say "East Williamsburg". There are a ton of new buildings going up in this area. It used to be pretty scary a couple of years ago though. Time will tell.

You people kill me with your "South, east, west...anything but where it's technically located" prefix's. It's Bushwick - - embrace it or leave it.

Having said that, the building is beautiful. I love that it looks similar to a carriage house, or a really old fire house. All things considered, the facade seems like it's been cared for. Someone loved it. I hope the person that invested in it appreciates its charm.

BEAUTIFUL!

the L train is so crowded to you think Bushwick will be the next williamsburg?

That photo was the view from my apartment from 1999 to 2005. During that time the building was an elevator repair company and the lot is where they parked their trucks.

I have a great photo of a guy leaning against that building shooting heroine at 6am on a sunday morning next to an overturned baby's crib. Good stuff.

Former 11206 Dweller (East Williamsburg according to official city maps)

Oh no, a heroine's been shot!

Actually, this building is located in southeastnorthsouthwest East-South Bushwickburg, you nincompoops.

Its actually East williamsburg. I know brokers say East williamsburg when they mean Bushwick, but this really is East Williamsburg.

Posted by: guest at December 6, 2007 9:21 AM

This is a block west of the Williamsburg Houses. It's not Bushwick by a long shot.

Posted by: guest at December 6, 2007 10:56 AM

ya - way off on bushwick claim....look at any CB map of NYC and you'll see....this is in heart of E. Williamsburg

i do believe that the renters will continue to come to williamsburg, east w. burg and bushwick regardless of the L. i travel on the L without any hassle now. think it's actually speedy compared to other lines.

the city is automating the L as best as possible. also, it's not nearly as bad as the 6 and look at all the young renters on the UES.

the real reason that renters will pour into east w.burg and bushwick is that unmarried/non-cohabitating 20/30 somethings typically like to go out a lot. and all the cool good bars and music venues are either in w.burg, the east village or the LES.

where else are they going to go? there are 6 young unmarried people in my office and all but 1 live in w.burg or greenpoint. (the one that doesn't lives in flatbush and hates how far it is).
