The View of Will Smith's Dumbo

dumbofuture2.jpg
A reader sent in this apocalyptic screen shot from the upcoming Will Smith movie I Am Legend. The big question is, however, how much will the cabanas at 70 Washington be worth at this point?

" I am a survivor living in New York City" and you will never find my ass at the South Street Seaport. I guess old Will's a tourist.

There will be lots more important things to worry about than real estate prices should this come to pass.

The bigger question is, should Hollywood be doing movies like this?

The lengths some people will go to to keep Manhattan hedge-fundies out of Brooklyn...

Posted by: Rehab at November 21, 2007 10:18 AM

an apocalypse like that could bring DUMBO prices down to around $500/sf.

Posted by: z at November 21, 2007 10:29 AM

rents in williamsburg will still be high, mainly because of the zombie population living there.

Images like this for some of us are not fun-scary, they are just sickening-scary, and I really wish we could avoid them...after a certain date 6 years ago, I sort of lost my taste for NYC apocalypse movies...maybe this being "entertainment" means that the much-vaunted "healing" has taken place and I'm just a wimp with PTSD...and, no, it's not like the bad guys have never thought of this, but do we have to lay it out for them in 70 mm? Oh, well...

I'm planning on starting a ferry service.

Posted by: guest at November 21, 2007 11:06 AM

Well, it's certainly a novel way to deal with congestion pricing.

Posted by: guest at November 21, 2007 11:11 AM

traffic at the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel must be a nightmare.

Yeah, Brenda from Flatbush, I'm with you. Images--and movies--like this just make me queasy. They're neither thought-provoking (as, for instance, serious art or writing on the subject might be), nor are they satisfying escapist entertainment (as this genre of movie should be). Guess I'm a wimp too...

New flash! Frustrated with the ever rising prices of vintage brownstones and bland cookie cutter glass box new condos due to Manhattan transplants "discovering" the charms of Brooklyn (the fourth largest city if it were a city), a militant group of neighborhood preservationists demolished all transportation links connecting the two boroughs, including the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. The group was lead by a former green beret, navy seal, army commando and real estate agent who kept muttering "I kept telling everyone that someday this war's gonna end and it did. I ended it! Serves those beautiful home envying sub-prime borrowing f____ers right. Now I can finally buy that clocktower penthouse at One Hanson"

Hahaha... u bastards are entertaining!

Speaking of NY apocalyptic movies, can anyone still watch Escape From Mew York" where the President's (the great Donald Pleasence) plane crashes into one of the Twin Towers? I can't.

Posted by: guest at November 21, 2007 12:08 PM

You know, I had a hard time watching Independence Day--another Will Smith action flick with apocalyptic NYC imagery--back when it came out (well before 9/11). Cringe.

The problem with Escape From New York is now they would build a wall and blow the bridges to keep people OUT of Manhattan.

Posted by: guest at November 21, 2007 12:29 PM

looks like they knocked down jcondo and beacon tower as well ...

have any of you actually seen this film, or know what it is about? didn't think so.

Posted by: guest at November 21, 2007 2:00 PM

There's a physics problem in this photo.

The suspension cables rest on top of the towers. They are not nailed there.

With the center span gone, the outer links of the bridge would also come down.

Duh.

2:00: The movie hasn't been released yet.

The trailer looks pretty good but 28 Days may have already beat them to the punch. I love that scene with WILL SMITH speeding uptown in what may be a Mustang or BMW .

Brenda from Flatbush.... lord, you took the thoughts right out of my head... this morning when I saw this, I felt so uneasy, and sad.
My neighbors and I saw the Towers fall... from my rooftop... all the little bits of papers from the offices drifted over the harbor and landed all around us.

For the next few months, since my neighborhood was under the plume, we woke to that awful sickening smell every day... even keeping the windows down couldn't block that smell out.

I was so frightened that morning... felt like the end of the world.

Called my mom in Florida that morning, she was so bewildered by the events of 9/11... 10 days later she passed away...

Awfully sad time for all New Yorkers, and for the nation.
