StreetLevel: Slope Getting a Piece of the Bay Ridge Pie

peppinoson5thave.JPG
A much loved Bay Ridge pizza parlor is bringing its thin-crust formula to 5th Avenue. The owners of 77th Street's Peppino's are opening a restaurant on 5th between 10th and 11th streets, in a storefront that's currently being gutted. Could mean that the South Slope is about to give places like Franny's and Peperoncino a run for their money. GMAP

mmmmmmm.... great! Love the thin-crust pizza! like the 15 cent slices from the 60's!

Is that really true? It used to be Agniello's, and I see the owner there every day dealing with the renovation. They definitely are putting in a brick oven, and making the place a lot nicer than it used to be. I didn't know it would be a different operator though. I got the sense that he was tired of running the place in recent months, but I figured he'd be staying on if he's dealing with the renovation day in and day out.....

Bring IT!

Posted by: guest at November 2, 2007 1:13 PM

How much do you bet they'll raise their prices in this posh "Park Slope" branch?
If not, I'm there.

Posted by: Mamacita at November 2, 2007 1:15 PM

Oh, no. Look what Satan is putting around the corner from me. And I'm down two belt notches this year; this will not help me get to minus three.

Posted by: ProfRobert at November 2, 2007 1:45 PM

Bring it. Peperoncino is 20 blocks from here, so no worries.

Posted by: guest at November 2, 2007 2:33 PM

In other news, the carpet store next Rachel's Taqueria has moved to a "bigger and better" location in Bay Ridge. Any clue what might be going in there?

Posted by: guest at November 2, 2007 2:35 PM

psyched about this. i loathe peperencino's though, ever since the time i got a corn salad there made of canned corn. gross. i'd think la villa - which i adore - would be more worried, but it's still a long way away.

Posted by: guest at November 2, 2007 2:38 PM

LaVilla shouldnt be worried about this place. Their pizza and dishes are delish. The bread they serve while waiting for your entree is so so good.

Posted by: iluvclintonhill at November 2, 2007 3:01 PM

Bar Toto is probably the closest pizza contender, but no brick, of course.

Posted by: guest at November 2, 2007 3:18 PM

I think this place is probably far enough away from Franny's (on Flatbush) not to hurt it--which is a shame, since I think Franny's is one of the most overrated new restaurants in the neighborhood recently. It's not bad, it's just extremely so-so, and totally not worth the prices (even if it is mostly organic or local), or all the good reviews they seem to get. The pizza is really mediocre.

In the Slope, La Villa's pizza is really good (or at least was--haven't been there in a couple years). And since we're talking on the subject, Caserta Vecchia on Smith St. also does good brick-oven pizzas!

Posted by: guest at November 2, 2007 3:26 PM

Totally agree about Franny's. Wildly overpriced, tiny portions. Horrible attitude on our last visit. Vowed (again) never to return.

Posted by: guest at November 2, 2007 3:29 PM

I'm so hungry I could bite a squirrel.

Posted by: guest at November 2, 2007 3:37 PM

Anthony's on 7th Avenue and 14th Street. Good pizza, good pasta, good salads, good environment.

Posted by: PPSer at November 2, 2007 3:38 PM

Wow--there must be some really low standards in Park Slope as far as good food is concerned. La Villa is the trashiest, greasiest "Italian-American" restaurant I've ever been to.

Posted by: guest at November 2, 2007 4:02 PM

Maybe it will affect Two Boots pizzeria-turned-lactation-bar and put them out of business. That is the sorriest excuse for pizza ever.

Posted by: guest at November 2, 2007 4:06 PM

Two Boot s pizza is great. La Villa not so great.

Posted by: guest at November 2, 2007 4:16 PM

agree that anthony's pizza (7th ave@14th) rocks...way better than la villa, way better attitude than franny's, which, after one visit, turned me off for life.

Posted by: guest at November 2, 2007 4:29 PM

Two Boots is AMAZING pizza.

Love them.

Posted by: guest at November 2, 2007 4:31 PM

going to franny's tonight. can't wait.

Posted by: guest at November 2, 2007 4:38 PM

What's that 24 hr bakery in the picture (that's closed!)? Is that for real?

Posted by: guest at November 2, 2007 4:46 PM

That bakery has been closed for ages.

Posted by: guest at November 2, 2007 5:07 PM

Franny's is overrated (and too expensive) and Peperoncino's pizza (and the rest of their entrees)is merely average. However, the new place won't be a competitor of either since it is several blocks away from both places.

Posted by: North Sleeper at November 2, 2007 5:35 PM

I hope this is good.
Anthony's pizza tastes good but is a burnt watery mess. I think they burn the crap out of the pizza and then pour a cup of water in the middle. Pathetic.
Two Boots in Brooklyn is ok but can't compare to the Manhattan Two Boots.

Posted by: guest at November 2, 2007 5:40 PM

Are there really that many lactating titties at the Brooklyn Two Boots?

Posted by: guest at November 2, 2007 5:51 PM

4:06 misses mommy.

Posted by: guest at November 2, 2007 7:05 PM

i live in bay ridge and am eating a calzone from peppinos as i write this. first off its really, really good pizza much better then anthonys i would say. second off its not inexpensive in bay ridge and their packed. i would strongly advise you to give them a chance and see for yourself. as full disclosure i do know the owner (who i met after going to their restaurant) and their about a month away from opening.

Posted by: guest at November 2, 2007 7:18 PM

Hurray for thin crust pizza! I'll definitely try it.

Posted by: guest at November 2, 2007 7:21 PM

Yummy....calzone, pizzas. I am salivating as I read these comments. But I'm on a freaking low-carb diet. Damn you!

Posted by: guest at November 2, 2007 7:27 PM

DiGiorno is every bit as good as delivery, people.

Posted by: guest at November 2, 2007 8:01 PM

Anthony's on 7th is great, thin crust, brick oven, friendly service. Did you know they are about finished and will open another brick oven pizza place on Prospect Park West right next to Farrell's Bar and the butcher. The oven is built.

Posted by: guest at November 2, 2007 9:28 PM

Peppino's is AWESOME! Slopers will love it. I think it's far better than Grimaldi's. You will forget all about Two Boots after you've had Peppino's.

Posted by: guest at November 3, 2007 12:09 PM

Peperoncino SUCKS, so bring it, I hope this place puts Peperoncino out of business. Similar to another poster here who got canned corn served in a salad, they served me a ravioli dish that was a) not described accurately in the menu at all, b) completely uncooked, c) tasted horrible, d) the waitress actually first said "no" to taking it back even though I'd only taken one bite, she was just so clueless about how to work in a restaurant she didn't know that patrons can send dishes back to the kitchen.

Back on topic, Bay Ridge has the best pizza places in all of NYC. I will argue someone to the end about that. Nothing I've tried in Manhattan or other parts of Brooklyn are nearly as good as any of the Bay Ridge pizza places. Thin crust is the only kind I'll eat. This is exciting news!

OMG. So funny...and so TRUE!

Posted by: guest at November 3, 2007 12:47 PM

Me again from 12:45, had to inform everyone I don't live in Bay Ridge, since we know everyone gets attacked for complimenting any neighborhoods other than the "prime" ones, here on Brownstoner. Me love pizza, that's all.

Posted by: guest at November 3, 2007 12:48 PM

Hey 12:47, stop staring.

Posted by: guest at November 3, 2007 1:04 PM

Two Boobs?

Posted by: guest at November 3, 2007 1:40 PM

I was commenting on all the mommy-and-me groups in Two Boots, not the boobs. It's like the hipster version of Chucky Cheese.

Posted by: guest at November 3, 2007 2:19 PM

Those aren't hipsters, they're yuppies. Please refer to the illustrations in your Brooklyn Field Guide of Stereotypes if you require further clarification.

Posted by: guest at November 3, 2007 4:54 PM

But Park Slope yuppies used to be hipsters. They are former nonconformists turned enthused conformists.

Posted by: guest at November 3, 2007 8:31 PM

This is all sooo confusing. I don't even know where I fall--am I a yuppy? I don't think I'm a hipster; I'm not self-conscious about what I wear and I'm not too creative. I wonder how I'd be labeled...

Posted by: guest at November 3, 2007 9:27 PM

La Villa's food is kind of mediocre and overpriced. But the free bread is amazing.

Posted by: slick at November 3, 2007 10:03 PM

The free bread is good, as is the fried eggplant and marinara sauce appetizer. Everything else... greasy, tasteless, and overall bad.

Posted by: guest at November 3, 2007 10:26 PM

Okay listen up...
I eat at Peppino's and i go for the vodka pie, shrimp oreganata and my favorite eggplant parm roll..great food nice people.

Posted by: guest at November 4, 2007 5:11 PM

8:31, I think what you;re describing is the bobo:

Posted by: guest at November 5, 2007 10:14 AM

Went to Franny's on Friday night with a little hesitation from the mixed reviews.

It was absolutely AMAZING! We had this roasted pumpkin appetizer with parmesan and balsamic vinegar...SO good.

Then the pizzas...we tried three different ones....all were better than the next. We were literally all going crazy about how good our meal was...!

I'll definitely be back.

The 24hr Bakery sign is a defunct Mexican Bakery that had been in the space for a long time.
