StreetLevel: New Biz Adds to 4th Ave. Buzz

brooklynbean.JPG
As Velvet Sea noted this weekend (and Gowanus Lounge followed up on this morning), a café called Brooklyn Bean is coming to the corner of 4th Avenue and Carroll Street—a sign, according to the blogger, that the avenue “has finally arrived.” While we’re not sure if the coffee shop—which is being started by the folks who own Cuppa Cuppa in the East Village and has nothing to do with Atlantic Avenue’s Brooklyn Bean & Tea Company—is definitive proof of that, we’re happy to see a cool-seeming business come to this stretch of 4th Avenue. (High-quality new establishments like Mule and Pacific Standard have congregated on the avenue’s northern end, while the blocks farther south have for the most part been all about condo construction.) The owners say they’re going to open sometime in January and that they’re planning to book live shows. Sounds good to us. GMAP

Should do well with all the buildings going up along 4th ave though most of those are on the east side of the street. With the Manhattan bound subway entrances also on the east side they will have to draw people across 4th ave and back before they enter the subway in the morning. Maybe not a big deal but it may make a difference.

they'll maybe get people coming from boerum hill towards 4th?

looks terrific!

i'm a little shocked by what's happening on 4th, but i think it's kinda becoming a little bit like what the east village was 20 years ago or lower east side 10 years ago...

i know a ton of artists moving to this area around park slope/gowanus

Gee like the east village...ya think?

Posted by: guest at November 26, 2007 3:04 PM

i didn't say a carbon copy of the east village. i said a little bit like. there's a huge difference. you just want to start an argument.

the spirit of this neighborhood with the pioneers moving into an area most people say is crap is very much like the early days of the gentrification of the east village.

I will continue to by my two weekly pounds of coffee at Gorilla Coffee.

Its strong and as addicitive as horse.

2 lbs a week?????

my lord.

Posted by: guest at November 26, 2007 3:31 PM

its not just for me: My wife and my 5 month old like the coffee too. We split between decaf and their high octane. We typically go through about 1 pound of decaf a week and maybe 1/4 - 1/2 lb of high octane.

don't think babies are supposed to drink coffee.

not sure, though.

maybe that's why i'm not a father.

It's better for the baby to chew on the unbrewed beans. It builds strong teeth and provides plenty of pep.

Coffee is great for babies. My 8 month old is a fan of the double-shot caramel macchiato. I fill his bottle with the stuff about 2x day.

We give our 2 year old triple shots with steamed Benadryl to even her out. Otherwise she gets really wound up and has problems concentrating on her Halo 3 game.

Every morning, our 7 month old snorts three lines of that Pico stuff they sell at the bodega. Then she does the Times crossword, grabs a bialy and heads out to kick the crap out of the world.

the other side of the street really needs a serious coffee shop. used to live around the corner from there and having to go to ozzies drove me crazy.

Posted by: guest at November 27, 2007 11:57 AM

Is it just me or has Ozzie's lost its groove?

Posted by: guest at November 27, 2007 2:14 PM

Its you - Ozzies never had a groove

Posted by: guest at November 29, 2007 2:46 PM

Yes, Ozzie blows massively. They serve you at a stoners pace on the best of days. I live on Carroll between 3rd and 4th and can't wait for the new joint to open up. There's nothing else close by and, I'm sorry, but I don't think Gorilla is all that. The wait staff are too-cool-for-school billy-burger types and the interior reminds my of an institutional cafeteria. Cold. Not cozy. Which is fine for some, just not for me.

A lot of foot traffic blows by Carroll and 4th ave daily. There are a few schools and a lot of folks who live on the Gowanus side of the tracks that will keep the place busy.

Funny no one's mentioned the super-old-school coffee roll joint on Carroll. Anyone got the 411 on that place? Seems pretty hardcore.
