StreetLevel: New Bistro Opening in Boerum Hill
We got word via a Boerum Hill tipster that the vacant storefront on the northwest corner of Bond and Pacific is slated to be the neighborhood's next bistro/bar. We checked out the rumor ourselves, and the workers who are overhauling the space confirmed the news and said it should be open for business within the next couple of months. Anyone have more details about the forthcoming eatery? GMAP

I was just thinking what we need is a really nice bistro.

I heard it was going to be a coffee shop. The cleaners guy across the street said he heard it was a combination workshop and cafe (?). The rent there is ridiculous, which is why it has been empty for over a year. I live a couple doors down so I've been pondering what I'd like to see in that space since the crappy bodega that was there before closed, but I just don't see anything being very successful on that corner. The bodegas on Atlantic have pretty much everything besides meat, so maybe a butcher shop would be good.

I heard from a reliable source that this space will be occupied by a design/construction company as a mixed use space use. Supposedly, the front corner space will be a coffee shop by day and bar/bistro by night. This will somehow over look a working wood shop and offices. The good news is that, according to my source, this company has been involved in building several high profile spots in the city, mentioned were The Box and Stanton Social. We shall see.

I miss the crappy bodega.

I hope they keep that weird asian lady that sits outside. She could make a good bouncer.

I live on state and bond. I run by that space almost every day. I take my clothes to that dry cleaner. I don't think that's a decent spot for a bistro for a number of reasons. The traffic is terrible; the street narrow; the homeless Chinese woman annoying. Much of the foot traffic is from the housing project down the road. I suspect those residents won't be laying down cash at a pricey bistro. The demographics don't work. I could be very wrong. Go for it but history suggests one needs to open a bistro in a much more visible area on Atlantic or Smith.

Whatever it ends up being, I think they should call it Fort Box, in honor of the revolutionary outpost in the area:

That asian lady is annoying, but also strangely observant. One day I came home from work early because I wasn't feeling well and she asked me "Why you home so early?" Then I recently started a new job at a nearby restaurant and after only a couple shifts she said "I saw you work at that restaurant, you give me free coffee!"

1. History can't suggest anything if there hasn't yet been a bistro, or whatever you want to call it, in Boerum Hill (but not on Atlantic). Brooklyn Inn seems to do just fine, if you're looking for anything remotely comparable.
2. Re: demographics... Don't even know how to respond. Just... I don't know, you go to that corner all the time, maybe take a look around.

the simple fact is that if a restaurant is really good people will go to it...wherever it is...

We live just down from the bodega on the corner of Bond and Bergen, and have on a number of occasions wished that the Brooklyn Inn had bistro food, so I know we'll look forward to trying it out. Just hope it is not over the top price-wise.

Is that high-end clothing store up the street (bond btw atlantic and pacific -- across from the salon) doing ok? It looks like there's never a soul in the place..
Also, what' the deal with the spraypainted window: 'The same 6 nice people are coming' ??!?!

If anyone says "Bistro Food" one more time, I'm going to start shooting. This neighborhood is positively overrun by French establishments, so it's not surprising that any "small or unpretentious restaurant" (Merriam-Webster) be called by it's French adjective. It's good for describing modest restaurants, but does very little work in describing the food found therein. You may picture a small and unpretentious Middle Eastern joint (Moustache) as easily as a small and unpretentious pasta place (Max). Do they both serve "Bistro Food"? Follow me?
I have it on good authority that the following three things are true:
1. It will be an american restaurant. Small "a", I think. (When I asked one of the workers on the job what kind of restaurant it was going to be, he said,"Not French")
2. If these guys hadn't taken the space, it would now be a Starbucks. No, I'm not kidding.
3. The "Chinese" woman who is pretty nuts and sits there all the time saying things like "You gonna die, baby!", she's from Vietnam.
