Streetlevel: Greasy Spoon Lives Again on 7th Ave.
Eggs and bacon are back on the menu for the South Slope following the recent opening of the Little Purity Diner. The delectably named eatery—an offshoot of the New Purity Diner on 7th Avenue and 7th Street—has set up shop on 12th Street and 7th Avenue, in the space that used to house Katina’s Diner. South Slopers glad to see the brunch spot revived? GMAP

Well, that's a potential step up. Katina's was actively vile while the Purity is merely bland.
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 2:45 PM
Merely bland indeed, however, you mustn't recall the original Purity further down 7th Ave near Union Street...no that location could have been the poster child for vile.
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 3:16 PM
make that - now, not "no"
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 3:17 PM
oh vile indeed... but such a nice place to hang out with friends and drink endless cups of coffee! :)
Posted by: bren at November 6, 2007 3:24 PM
we need a bar up on 7th near union.
a nice, casual bar.
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 3:31 PM
How about Snooky's?
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 3:37 PM
Snooky's is now Elementi.
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 3:40 PM
Well I for one am boycotting it - I am against chain stores and will not support them
-Park Slope Moron
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 3:41 PM
how about a nice gay bar?
seen a lot of "us" in the hood lately.
something else besides excelsior.
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 3:42 PM
don't you mean, park dope moron?
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 3:44 PM
I miss Beso.
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 3:45 PM
Catty Shack?
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 3:46 PM
Beso started good but had been godawful for years. Good riddance.
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 3:46 PM
catty is nice.
but i'm thinkin something up on 7th...
those blocks up near union, lincoln, berkeley, etc...there are tons of vacancies.
and tons of gays around.
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 3:49 PM
Boot out Ranche Alegro and turn that into a gay bar.
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 3:53 PM
doesn't even have to be gay...per se...just a nice casual gay-friendly hang out type lounge.
exposed brick, tin ceiling, some nice couches, sufjan stevens-esque music and a cute bartender or two.
too much to ask?
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 3:56 PM
Sounds delish.
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 4:04 PM
I miss Katina's!
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 4:09 PM
I'd take Katina's over "Purity" any day of the week.
Ever order chili at Purity? It's from a CAN!
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 4:16 PM
Per 3:56PM's "gay-friendly" comment: is anywhere in Park Slope--or any trendy/gentrified/yuppie/hipster Brooklyn hoods--NOT gay-friendly? Not being facetious at all, just genuinely curious...
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 4:41 PM
I loved Katrina... :-(
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 4:45 PM
Bar 4 on 15th and 7th used to be gaygay, but no more. Isn't it gay friendly still, or is it too far south slope?
Posted by: Rocknrope at November 6, 2007 4:45 PM
no, most places around are gay friendly...you are correct...i suppose i just mean somewhere where gays actually hang out.
would be nice to meet some potential mates round here.
i mean...i love union hall...it's great...but very few gays there...
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 4:55 PM
4:41 - Jackie's 5th Amendment for starters...
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 4:57 PM
i heard all the gays love that place
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 5:33 PM
Only the toe-tappers.
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 5:37 PM
yea, no...we don't love that place...
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 5:41 PM
Wait, so is there a large gay population in Park Slope? Serious question. I hope so. I'm apartment hunting in the area and would love for there to be more than just young families and stroller moms in the neighborhood.
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 5:43 PM
"Wait, so is there a large gay population in Park Slope?"
Oh indeed. Many of the lesbians have moved on to Ditmas Park, but there is still a sizable queer contingent in the Slope.
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 5:49 PM
There are indeed quite a few of the homosexual persuasian in Park Slope.
It used to be one of the largest lesbian enclaves in the country, and no doubt there are still quite a few, although I believe some have defected towards Kensington and other less expensive areas. I still see a ton around though.
There seems to be an ever-increasing amount of gay men as well. I notice a lot of "us" up in the North Slope area especially.
The family and stroller mom business gets a lot of press, but it's just that...press. I'd say if I had to take a guess, I'd say a good 50-60% of Park Slope is made up of singles...both gay and straight.
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 5:50 PM
Cool, cool, cool.
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 6:16 PM
And how annoying is it with those damn strollers and prams blocking store aisles and entries? They do fold don't they?
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 6:16 PM
Sorry to say but Purity diner doesn't have a good reputation for the food. The store is always packed though... Like someone said it may be a good hang out place!
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 6:22 PM
Memories of moving into Park Slope in 1978.....late nights at McFeeley's (was it still Camperdown Elm then?)....late mornings at the original Purity eating eggs over easy and chatting with George and laughing at the waitress we called Blinky...she took your order one item at a time, went to the kitchen, came back and took another item, went to the kitchen, came back etc....and the busty woman with the great boufant behind the counter, screaming to the kitchen "cup o creamo"....ahhhh the good old days!!!! They don't call em greasy spoons for nothing and the definitely serve a purpose.
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 6:55 PM
my apt. is a gay place, 8:43...
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 8:45 PM
Am I missing something? What kind of name is "Purity"? For a diner no less...
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 8:46 PM
i thought it was named such because you had to be a virgin to eat there.
that's why i always thought it was empty.
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 8:49 PM
Can't anyone spell anymore?...and maybe we all don't need nicer places...maybe we just need a greasy spoon. A cheap place to eat with runny eggs. This is Brooklyn after all!!!! And BTW as a straight person here....you gay guys really need to learn how to live in a neighborhood with all kinds of people....what is a gay place? Is it a place that doesn't welcome straights? How would you like it if Purity didn't welcome gays?....get over your gay-self (and I don't mean that in a bad way.)
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 8:51 PM
A gay place is a place that does not welcome people who do not understand the need for gay places.
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 8:58 PM
until gay people have the exact same rights as straight people, i suggest you shut your hole, 8:51.
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 9:07 PM
There is so much hypocrisy in the world, you sometimes have to laugh.
Gays get a bad rap sometimes for being promiscous, being too narcissistic, problems with drugs, etc.
How exactly do you expect gay people to meet other people for potential relationships if you don't approve of "gay places?"
Do you assume we all walk around and "know" exactly who is gay? We don't all wear scarlet letter "G"s on our chests you know...
Straight people get no flack for going to meet people at bars...that is the primary reason they are there afterall, isn't it...to meet people of a like mind...? I would say most people other than alcoholics go to bars with the hope that maybe you'll find a nice guy or girl. Even if you'd never admit such a thing out loud, most single people probably have the idea in small portion of the back of their head, that maybe they'll fall in love tonight. or fall in like.
Why would you deny gay people that same right?
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 9:17 PM
Well 9:07 that is a great way to start a dialogue....good job! So I guess until gay people have all the same rights as straights this discussion is moot....like I said good job.
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 9:18 PM
Since I haven't been single for 30 years...I find this conversation interetsing. I go to bars or restaurants or any public place to meet people....of like mind or not...I like a good argument occasionally. But I find the idea of "gay place" interesting...can't gay people meet gay people at any place this is brooklyn...does the bar have to be gay to meet a gay person?....Now I'm confused. I go to public places and meet gay people....why does it have to be a "gay place."...why can't it be just a place to meet people?
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 9:48 PM
Some of us, just want a neighborhood bar, like the Excelsior, where we can meet up with friends for a drink and just be ourselves. The game is not on and we don't have to worry about what the other patrons think.
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 10:24 PM
Come on--I'm straight, and I totally understand the need for a gay bar or similar. Cut the crap already.
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 10:25 PM
Well thankfully there are gay bars in Park Slope.
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 10:33 PM
Re: gay bars - how about Ginger's on 5th Avenue? I thought that was very gay friendly, no?
Posted by: guest at November 6, 2007 10:53 PM
i think it's mostly a girl bar.
same with cattyshack.
bar reis is nice.
just wish there was something up in the north slope...maybe on 7th or flatbush.
think it would do well.
