StreetLevel: Associated Expanding on 5th Ave.
The rumors about Associated’s takeover of the old Beso space on 5th Avenue near Union are looking solid. There’s a rendering of an expanded version of the supermarket pasted on the window of the recently shuttered restaurant that shows the grocery store (see photo on jump) also swallowing up the adjacent (and similarly closed) Donutscoffee shop. We’re looking forward to seeing a bigger supermarket in this spot, but we know a few Slopers who were hungry for another restaurant in the spot. Think it’s an OK trade-off? GMAP

Damn, DONUT SHOP is closing? Truly the end of an era...

I like the Associated. The deli guy is real friendly!

Donut shop was the best place for egg sandwiches. Loved the counter girls accent. what will I do now when I want breakfast for under $2?

i hope someone is able to salvage the sign for the donus shop. it's so cute!!!
also, did anyone else notice that FLIGHT001 has now opened on 5th ave and bergen!!
such an amazing store.
i for one, welcome the expanded associated. one of the better markets in the neighborhood.
we've got plenty of good restaurants already.

Beso had descended into awfulness. The expanded grocery store is VERY welcome.

Once AY is built ... I mean Whole Foods, Associated will be worthless (in 2026).

The Chinese take out on the South Side of the Associated is now out of business so a restaurant can open there - or Associated can et even bigger!
Good for Associated - perfect example of a local merchant taking ADVANTAGE of gentrification. They upgraded the store, improved merchandise (probably raised prices) and now is set for an expansion. American capitalism at its finest!

I think that Associated should hire the interior designer who did that House of the Day over on 3rd St!

Expect another "What we're losing" type column to soon appear in "Forgotten New York" about the Donut Shop. You know, another of those "This is the end of civilization as we know it" stories.

TANGENT:
Anyone know what is to become of the D'Agostino's space on Seventh Ave?
Posted by: BrooklynCouch at November 20, 2007 3:57 PM
It still said for rent when I walked by on Sunday.
I had once heard doctor's offices, but I'm rather hoping for an Amish Market myself.
Or maybe a Jamba Juice and an Ethiopian place.
Wishful thinking, I know.

I heard the D'Ag will be a BANK.
Posted by: guest at November 20, 2007 4:05 PM
i think the bank is just taking the portion where gothic cabinet was. that part does not have a for rent sign.
but the d'ag space does.

Can they stuff a mini-Trader Joe's in the former D'Agastinko's space?
Posted by: guest at November 20, 2007 4:14 PM
I think we would all LOVE that.
I actually emailed Trader Joe's to see if they would take a look at that space. No response.
How about a small, boutique apple store?
That space is so so prime. It really should be something good that can take advantage of all the foot traffic from the neighborhood and hospital. All those wealthy doctors need a place to spend their bucks.

I doubt TJ's would open a place so close to the Atlantic and Court location.
Posted by: guest at November 20, 2007 4:33 PM
yeah, it's a pipe dream...i know.
but the place would seriously BANK.
would be a gold mine in park dope.

I won't miss Beso but the Donut place was great.
I only hope this means Associated will start selling beer and cheap. AND finally gets a real butcher and stops selling that rank smelling meat they currently have. Also milk that doesn't turn right away due to poor refrigeration.

Will miss Beso. I know people were down on it (and service could be spotty at certain hours), but it's on the very fwe brunch places open BEFORE 11am. I'm a morning person, so I went there when it opened; and had great service. Will miss the donut shop.

everytime ive bought chicken from Associated it smelled like fish.
plus, there were the cats that used to roam around inside.
I go there for the occaisional jamon serrano fix. otherwise, no.
Posted by: guest at November 20, 2007 5:08 PM
i agree. i also really enjoyed beso a lot.
still haven't found a brunch place i liked as much as there.

Only ever buy factory sealed non perishables from Assoc.
Posted by: guest at November 20, 2007 6:05 PM
are you serious, 6:05?
the place really isn't that bad.
Posted by: guest at November 20, 2007 8:41 PM
8:40 - Try the Pink Pussycat on 5th Ave.

Hopefully the expanded associated will have sashimi-grade fish. is that too much to ask?
Posted by: guest at November 21, 2007 8:01 AM
8:01, yes.
Posted by: guest at November 21, 2007 8:44 AM
I dont know about you guys, but i think the associated expanding plan is a pretty good idea for the store, just hope there are a more variety of items and maybe More sea food, i also like the idea of the new Front cashier renovation, much more space a bit faster, one final remark is that they should hire as one of you said, a real Butcher!! The cats are ok, very friendly :)
