On Duffield Street, Two Stories Down, 23 to Go
The LAM Group's pair of Gene Kaufmann-designed hotels at 222 Duffield Street is finally showing some visible signs of progress. The 500-room complex, which will be split into a Sheraton and an Aloft, will be competing against the 22-story, Karl Fischer-designed hotel just across the street. It'll have a head-start though: An old sneaker store is still sitting on the site where the Fischer creation is slated to rise.

very weak rendering and design.
looks like another snoozer.
while it's going to benifit the improvement of the area, the design does nothing raise the bar or to REALLY put downtown bk on the design map. i thought ALOFT would be more cutting edge, and not a siamese sheraton.
ho-hum....
and what's with the trump-esque stepping at the base? tre-80s indeed.

it may not be the taj mahal, but it's not crap either. this is a net positive for the area in a significant way.

Gene Kauffman is a one trick pony with zero, let me repeat, ZERO talent. Every single project he does is just a riff on the two-toned brick arranged in some butt-ugly pattern. THe guy is an architect (barely) that people turn to when they have to have an architect, but really don't want one. It doesn't help that he thinks he's god's gift to New York.
Brooklynlove, if you think that bldg is a net positive, you and I live in different worlds. That kind of building will ruin an area for a generation.

so you think that having changed nothing with what was there before would have been better than what is going there now? aesthetics are only part of the total equation.
