Lighting Up the Waterfront

nightlights1107.jpg
We just noticed this colorful display of lights on a certain new waterfront development. Is this a Holiday thing or have we just not been paying attention? Who can name the building?

Hey comon, where were you hiding?
That has been on the schaefer buildings for more then a year now I think :p
(What do I get for knowing the answer?)

You're not paying attention!

Its been there for ages - think it was even written up in the papers somewhere a year or two back.

The other night, it was so foggy that you couldn't see across the river - except for this light display.

does it change color or is it always the same?

The two peeps above are correct, the light show has been going for more then a year on the Schaffer Landing development. The light show will change depending on the holiday and season.

I'm holding the answer for your 2nd question until you give for the first...
I's the same colors as far as I can tell, just the the bulbs rotate giving the look of color change.

Their LED lights along the facade of the building. This past July 4th they did a red/white/blue montage thing.

Anyone notice last night the new roof-top lights on the Forte?

You definitely haven't been paying attention...on the other hand, you may not have left Brooklyn in a long while, which is entirely understandable.

I noticed the Forte lights last night - they were purple, then red, then purple again.

I noticed the lights on the Forte...very cool.

Posted by: guest at November 28, 2007 4:35 PM

That's true. We try to minimize the number of trips we have to make across the river.

I was on a boat and got a fairly upclose view in late summer.
The lights were changing slowly between a couple of colors. It's a rather ugly display frankly...might have been more interesting but might have cost too much.

Reminds me of the power plant with all its lights you see from 95 as you pass through Bridgeport, CT. From a distance one might think it's an industrial installation, not residential.

What do I win for knowing the artist? The installation was designed by Anne Militello of Vortex Lighting. She's better known for lighting the facade of the New 42nd Street Studio Building in NY. And no, I'm not her agent.

FG/TGL is correct - the lights (LEDs) slowly shift between a few different colors. Roughly every 20 to 30 seconds it morphs from one color to another. Every so often the soft fade stops and the lights start blinking on and off (randomly).

Design-wise, it might be the most interesting thing about the building.

WBer...
Yes, the buildings is not very nice. I had forgotten the lights blink. Yes, I know remember the random strobe effect we watched from the boat. Not the most interesting view in NYC...

In Hong Kong, nightly at 8:00, there is a multimedia display of coloured lights, laser beams and searchlights on 44 buildings on both sides of Victoria Harbour. Maybe this is the beginning for us? I wonder if other buildings will join in? It's not actually as cheesey as it sounds.

Yeah, we can do it up real classy like the Eiffel Tower light show.

IN spite of all you stupid former Manhattan people living in our beloved Borough, we are nonetheless proud of our development. Go home. And... do go back across the East River.

The image sucks. You need to improve your evening photography skills, man.

I noticed the Forte' lights shift from blue to green to yellow to orange/red to purple and repeat all night.

Makes that 2 story rectangle eye sore on the roof look really cool!
