Duane Reade to Anchor Catsimatidis Complex on Myrtle

Underneath the 1,000-plus apartments that John Catsimatidis has in the works for Myrtle Avenue between Ashland and Prince, there's going to a total of 239,000 square feet of retail space (including second- and basement-level) to be divided between five different tenants. The anchor store, according to Jeff Winick of Winick Realty, is slated to be Duane Reade. While this is not surprising given that the drug chain used to occupy one of the buildings demo'd to make way for the development, it does raise questions about whether Catsimatidis, who made his first fortune in the supermarket biz, will bring Gristedes or another market to the site. After all, Duane Reade is moving more and more into supermarket territory, already offering basics like eggs and milk. Plus, if a decent market comes to the Navy Yard site, that would further argue against a competitor setting up shop on Myrtle. Waddya think?

I think Duane Reade is over priced. We need a real grocery store. Further down Myrtle will be another drug store (walgreen or rite aid?) And I hope we don't get another Pathmark.

A decent supermarket is needed but Greedstedes is way overpriced...but I'm sure some sort of supermarket is in the works considering all these "luxury" towers going up.

A drugstore does not represent any competition at all to a real grocery store--they only sell milk and eggs as a convenience. Not that Gristedes is a real grocery store--Gristedes and D'Ag both suck hard. Fairway, dammit!

I didn't weigh in on the recent Navy Yard supermarket discussion because that thread got hopelessly bogged down in the stuff it always gets bogged down in. Anyway, I was given "Foodtown" as an example of the type of supermarket to expect there. That said, a Gristedes on Myrtle probably would serve a different market. I'm pretty sure that when the Associated was closed, the developer stated a new supermarket would be included in these buildings.

i think that a gristedes in that retail space if very possible. they are supposedly opening a space in one of the new developments over in the area of the courthouse and queens plaza vicinity of LIC. i think that this development would present a somewhat similar opportunity.

Gristedes would die there, unless of course he doesnt charge them rent :o)
Maybe it could do well AFTER all of the other condos are built downtown. Afterall, those folks will have to shop somewhere for groceries.

with toy factory, the 2 oro buildings and avalon right next door, this development itself, and all the people living in ingersol and university, it seems that there would be a decent enough local stream of commerce in the near future to support a supermarket.

dr hs one of the ugliest logos in NYC, especially when you consider how its plastered all over the city
verizon is pretty bad as well
