Development Watch: 234 Greene Avenue

234greeneavenue1107.jpg
After a rough start last year, the Karl Fischer-designed building at 234 Greene Avenue in Clinton is looking like it's about ready for prime time. The 13,500-square-foot building contains ten units; judging from that ratio, we're guessing a lot of two-bedrooms in the mix. Anyone know who's going to be marketing these?

Not the ugliest building going up in the hood--not too bad, actually, in this shot--but I really wish it didn't protrude in front of its neighbors the way it does.

A insane, freakish nightmare. A truly revolting, horrific, dysphoric outrage. An ungodly, barren graveyard. A screeming holocaust of a structure.

Methinks 12:55 lives next door.

It has a 1950s SOM vibe to it. It looks like a third of an office building.

No one who wishes to save their soul can look at that portal-of-horror building without trembling and shaking to their very foundations. Something this twisted and grotesque will leave you altered, changed, unable to truly feel right in this world again. Do not gaze upon it if you wish to remain right!

I don't live anywhere near it.

Eh, doesn't look any worse than any of the other crap going up in Brooklyn these days. But maybe that's because I sold my soul to Old Scratch some years ago.

i lived across from the parking lot this used to be for many years, i think it's nice to see something filling up the space there. yeah it ain't a neo-gothic-revival-whatever, but if you are familiar with the block you will know that there's an old-folks home across the street that sports soulless design and street-facing parking, so this is hardly a step down.

now if they can just get somebody to move in, there or the 'shoe factory' or the other building down the block nobody wants to live in.

I thought people bought into the shoe factory. Also, this is one of the ugliest blocks in the neighborhood. I mean this is Greenpoint fugly, Williamsburg-Red Hook hideous! So, this is a huge step forward.

Is the existentialist-door writer also posting on this thread? Is that you DoorMan?

This building sticks out like a sore thumb. I hate when these monstrosities change the character of the block but as someone said, better than a lot.

Posted by: guest at November 13, 2007 3:32 PM

This looks pretty awful to me -and it is not even finished. usually new buildings look a little better before they are completely finished. there's no hope for this one.
What is growing out the top? Missile silo?

Posted by: guest at November 13, 2007 3:36 PM

Does anyone know who is going to be marketing this property?

Posted by: guest at November 13, 2007 4:16 PM

The problem isn't that it's modern, which I like to see as it's refreshing, it's the clashing colors of the facade next to those other facades. And it's jutting out too far past the sides of the other buildings. It's like this architect designed the thing without ever having visited the site. Like someone just sent him the dimensions of the lot and that's it.

Posted by: guest at November 13, 2007 4:58 PM

yeah, you're right. it clashes like the dickens.

Posted by: guest at November 13, 2007 6:45 PM

Another Fischerbot masterpiece, designed in three mouseclicks.

Posted by: guest at November 13, 2007 8:34 PM

What the hell is that building doing there. I hope it burns down without affecting the buildings next to it.

Posted by: guest at November 13, 2007 10:04 PM

Got harsh?

Posted by: guest at November 14, 2007 9:54 AM

Folks have bought into the Shoe Factory (myself being one of them). STILL waiting in the tax lot paperwork. We signed the contract in February. I believe all the units have been sold. Just waiting to move in....some day.

Not thrilled about the look of this new building, but hardly shocked given all the other crap going up.
