Closing Bell: Facade Collapse in the Slope
Here’s something of a novelty: Potentially dangerous stuff falling off a building that doesn’t seem related to shoddy or unsafe conditions at a construction site. A small part of the façade of a building on 5th Avenue near Carroll Street crumbled last night (see photo on jump), leaving a big pile of rubble on the sidewalk. According to some bystanders who were on the scene this morning, the collapse happened at around 2 a.m., and no one was injured. In the meantime, cops have taped off the sidewalk around the debris and told us they’re waiting for the DOB to inspect the building and decide whether it needs to be vacated. GMAP

So, I guess Local Law 11 does not apply in Brooklyn?

hahaha@ closing bell... I love that
Posted by: guest at November 27, 2007 4:24 PM
i thought brownstones last forever and only brand new condo buildings fell apart.
Posted by: guest at November 27, 2007 4:28 PM
A little gingerbread got overcooked is all.
Brownstone 101:
When you do not properly maintain an old brownstone facade, bits and pieces will likely fall off after a heavy rain.

#1: Local Law 11 only applies to buildings over 7 stories
Posted by: guest at November 27, 2007 4:34 PM
4:28....
no one ever said brownstones never fall apart. that's absurd.
the difference is they remain standing after 100 years, whereas bits usually begin falling off the new condos after 10 years.
or in the case of drywall cracking, flooring buckling and molding coming away from the walls, about a year and a half.

The wind was blowing like crazy last night. Thought my own roof might come off.
Don't go to that shoe place. It sucks.
Posted by: guest at November 27, 2007 4:49 PM
that shoe place is awesome!
i love joe!
he did amazing work on my leather boots.
Posted by: guest at November 27, 2007 4:54 PM
Joe moved a couple of doors down and the 5th Avenue committee which owns that place isn't screwing him on the rent. How else could a guy like him survive? Bravo for local community businesses that can survive the onslaught of banks and expensive restaurants.

Can't stand that communist organization that subsidizes people instead of kicking them out as all good landlords should do. Isn't ther a law against this? ;)
Posted by: cmu at November 27, 2007 5:34 PM
Hear, hear, Marlon!
It matters not if the business is "good," or "friendly," or "well-stocked," or any other value so highly prized by yuppies with no sense of local history. They are local, and therefore deserve support!
Anyone can succeed with a "good" business that provides "value" or "service." But what of the people who cannot do that? They deserve to make a living too!

Joe pretty much destroyed my favorite pair of boots when all I asked was that he put on topees. Pretty basic shoe repair request. He made a complete mess of them.
Posted by: guest at November 27, 2007 8:05 PM
i seriously doubt that, 8:05.
Posted by: guest at November 27, 2007 9:21 PM
Actually Local Law 11 applies to all buildings over six stories dude. if you have a seven story building, you gotta get an inspection.
Posted by: guest at November 27, 2007 9:23 PM
Your favorite pair of boots will be worthless after AY is built.
Posted by: guest at November 27, 2007 9:40 PM
i repair all of my own shoes.
Posted by: guest at November 27, 2007 10:54 PM
Any idea what the His & Hers Social Athletic Club was? That space appears to have been closed for years.
Posted by: guest at November 27, 2007 11:03 PM
how does a shoe repair store ever stay in business? What a pointless business.
who gives a shit if its been there for decades. Its like being happy a wagon wheel repair company is still open.
Posted by: guest at November 28, 2007 8:43 AM
The AY comments used to be funny, but they're getting pretty old now.
Posted by: guest at November 28, 2007 8:45 AM
11:03 No specific knowledge of that club, however, check out some of the still existing social clubs and combine that with a historical demographic of what south brooklyn was and an idea may come to mind about the possibilities.
Posted by: guest at November 28, 2007 9:19 AM
I think the name speaks forr itself. It was just a social club for men and women.
Posted by: guest at November 28, 2007 9:26 AM
8:43: Seriously? You never get your shoes fixed? I know I use those places all the time. Why not replace a heel rather than chucking your shoes? On the other hand, I do not have any wagon wheels.
Posted by: Carol Gardens at November 28, 2007 10:36 AM
I also use shoe repair all the time.
You are extremely wasteful if you throw your shoes away instead of replacing them with a 10 dollar new sole.
Most civilized people do go to show repair shops. They are on every block in Europe.
If I'm spending 300 or 400 on shoes, I want to take care of them.
Posted by: guest at November 28, 2007 11:18 AM
repairing my shoes would cost more than the shoe itself.
so it gets the trash.
only yuppies and idiots get their shoes repaired.
Posted by: guest at November 28, 2007 11:18 AM
i got new heels on my stompin' boots today, 11:18.
Posted by: guest at November 28, 2007 11:27 AM
wow, big spender 11:18 #2.
where does one find shoes for 10 dollars anyway?
they must be puuuurty.
Posted by: guest at November 28, 2007 11:31 AM
WTF WHO PAYS 400 DOLLARS ON SHOES!!!!!
I live in a completely different world than this person.
Posted by: guest at November 28, 2007 11:48 AM
I buy $400 shoes and they last for years! After a year or two of wear, I spend 10 bucks on a new sole and a shine and they are good as new.
Good quality shoes can last a very long time. Oh...and they look better!
I'd rather buy one quality pair than 50 pairs of $10 shoes.
This society is so wasteful....whether it's shoes or homes or food or whatever the case...try spending a little more on something of quality and taking care of it and appreciating it instead of buying crap at Walmart and have it fall apart after a month.
It's disgusting.
Sometimes I wonder how I could have been born in this country.
Posted by: guest at November 28, 2007 12:01 PM
do you only have one pair of shoes which you wear every day?
doubt it.
stfu
Posted by: guest at November 28, 2007 12:34 PM
Hear, hear, 12:01!
Posted by: guest at November 28, 2007 12:39 PM
You can only wear one pair at a time!
Posted by: guest at November 28, 2007 1:03 PM
I have a handful of nice shoes. Some I found on sale at Century 21 for a 100 bucks and some I paid $300 or $400 dollars for and look like they did when I bought them 5 years ago.
Would much rather have the 8 pairs I have than a closet full of Payless and Walmart finds.
That's just me though. Everyone does their own thing.

@ 11:03 PM
The only time I have seen anyone going in or out of His'n'Hers Social Club it was one of the stars of the Sopranos. I kid you not. Someone who works on the block later confirmed for me that he stores his stuff there.
Posted by: guest at November 28, 2007 1:50 PM
i'm not a woman.
Posted by: guest at November 28, 2007 3:48 PM
