Brownstoner Reader Survey Results
Thanks to the 1,182 readers who took the time to fill out our most recent reader survey. As promised, we've got some results to share with you. First of all, 87% of respondents live in Brooklyn, with the most represented neighborhoods being Park Slope, Clinton Hill, Carroll Gardens, Bed Stuy, Fort Greene and Brooklyn Heights, in that order. Just over 95% of respondents have at least a college degree, with about half of those also having a graduate degree of some kind. Given the education data, it's not hugely surprising that about 70% of respondents said they earn $100,000 or more a year. Two-thirds of survey takers also own their own place: Of those, 58% own a house, 24% a co-op and 18% a condo. More than half of those currently renting plan to buy within the next two years. And we're a conservative bunch: 70% have locked in a fixed rate mortgage. When it comes to maintenance and repairs, over 60% of homeowners drop at least $2,500 a year. And we were happy to see this last stat: 36% of people who took the time to respond said they visit the site anywhere from several times a day to obsessively.

Your demographic looks like a wet dream for an advertiser.

How 'bout a 'Day in the life of brownstoner' video? You wake up, grab a cup of coffee at Choices, head on down to Dumbo, log in (what does your screen look like?), peruse the news and link relative stories, take a break, go out and take progress shots for 'Development Watch', select your HOTD and COTD, etc. What's it like to be you?
Posted by: guest at November 23, 2007 10:25 AM
I go to Brownstoner before I go to the Times. Geez.
Posted by: guest at November 23, 2007 10:35 AM
is it possible that people completed more than one survey?
Posted by: guest at November 23, 2007 10:41 AM
Why would you suspect that people may have filled out more than one survey? Maybe people just enjoy the brownstoner site - ever think of that?
Posted by: guest at November 23, 2007 10:48 AM
The survey used cookies to prevent that from happening. It's also hard to imagine why anyone would want to fill out more than one. Also, the results are pretty consistent with the results from last February. For example, in both surveys, 87% of respondents said they live in Brooklyn.

A racial demographic would have been interesting, even as an optional question. Anybody think it would have been less than 98% caucasian?
Posted by: guest at November 23, 2007 11:20 AM
11:20 you are absolutely right would have been 98%+ but then again that's probably because you cant use surveymoney from a PS2...
God what a dumb comment...but I'm sure you won't rest until the demographic of cyberspace is 100% racially balanced...
Posted by: guest at November 23, 2007 11:41 AM
11:20, I agree. I've mentioned that in my survey the past two times...
11:41, what do you mean by PS2? If you mean what I think you mean, then that's super offensive, and you are a bigot and an a$$.
Look at the neighborhoods represented - some of them (Bed Stuy, Clinton Hill, Fort Greene) have huge populations of people of color, many of whom are college educated and middle class (like me, although I do fall way short of the average Brownstoner salary). I don't know that anything is keeping people of color from more frequently accessing this site, so I am not blaming anyone for this one-sided demographic. I would just be curious to see those numbers and am disappointed that Brownstoner isn't as interested in that as me, ans 11:20, and probably a few other people, that's all.
Don't jump on people for asking questions and being curious.
P.S. What would be so horrible about cyberspace being racially balanced?! In this day of $300 computers, it isn't such a crazy goal, is it?
Posted by: BrooklynZoo at November 23, 2007 11:48 AM
And, 11:20? What if it was? What does that mean to you?
Posted by: guest at November 23, 2007 11:49 AM
Holy crap. This is really getting ridiculous. Now you want to force people to visit a site to make it "racially balanced"? Are you kidding me? This liberal pc garbage has gotten so out of hand, and does nothing but provide ammo for the sick Ann Coulters of the world.
Posted by: guest at November 23, 2007 11:54 AM
I actually agree that it would have been interesting to see a survey that contained more specifics--data on children/schools, lifestyles/habits, the kinds of food and products people buy, tradesmen that people have hired, all of which could be used to impress advertisers. Maybe that's down the road.
On the race question, most of these neighborhoods are obviously fabulously diverse. Doesn't matter what color you are--when you need a plumber, you need a plumber, no?

We got our own homes, we got fixed-rates, we got $100k +, we got college. Heh, we ain't stoo-pid.
Posted by: guest at November 23, 2007 12:06 PM
Wanted to know if people were skewing results, that's why I asked if it was possible for people to fill out the survey more than once. Thanks for the explanation Mr. B.
Posted by: guest at November 23, 2007 12:19 PM
Rehab,
Clinton Hill, BedStuy and Fort Greene are predominately black neighborhoods.
Posted by: guest at November 23, 2007 12:56 PM
So, a lot of middle class Brooklyn property owners living in the brownstone crescent are real estate obssessed - no surprise there.
I would like to see more folks from other parts of the borough: like the whole southern half. This burg is only about 11.5 miles from top to bottom and it would be good to involve more parts of it in the discussions.
Posted by: LM at November 23, 2007 1:02 PM
And?
Posted by: guest at November 23, 2007 1:04 PM
Brownstoner survey said "the most represented neighborhoods being Park Slope, Clinton Hill, Carroll Gardens, Bed Stuy, Fort Greene and Brooklyn Heights, in that order."
These are the users of this site. These are the people visiting and using this site. If there aren't many southern Brooklyn visitors to this site, so be it. Are you going to force them to use this site? Are you kidding me with the "more inclusive" comment?
Ridiculous.
Posted by: guest at November 23, 2007 1:08 PM
Who said anything about forcing anyone to use the site??!?!?
A few people are saying that they are curious about statistics of the racial and ethnic makeup of site visitors. Why is that such a crazy thing?!

Whiners, cry babies, no one is ever happy.

The demographics partially explain the attitudes here toward people who don't earn 110K or more.
Yep, it's our own damn fault - shame on us for getting an education, but then using it for silly little things like being a teacher, working for a non-prof or being artistic.

If you only use cookies to prevent multiple anything by same user, that is not much good for anyone that knows the simple stuff like how to clear their cookies and cache.
Posted by: guest at November 23, 2007 3:30 PM
I live in the Hill/Ft. Green and know the demographic. Like it a lot.
And I haven't seen any expressions of a bad attitude toward people who make less than 110K, except from your inevitable occasional troublemakers.
Now, you people who make under 90 and who don't have a boat or a lake house, I have no use for you. :)

I hope there are OPEN HOUSE PICS today!! It's not looking good!
Posted by: guest at November 23, 2007 4:06 PM
People often exaggerate a tad about income, on surveys, btw.
Posted by: guest at November 23, 2007 4:06 PM
Brownstoner, is there any way to block the IP address of the sick dude who keeps posting the video?
Posted by: guest at November 23, 2007 4:45 PM
IP addresses are never blocked on Brownstoner. God forbid number of posts are ever reduced in any way for any reason. Bad for selling ads.
Posted by: guest at November 23, 2007 4:47 PM
This just proves there are some sick f*$ks who read Brownstoner. Too bad the option "live in parents' basement and jack off all day" wasn't an option in the survey.
Posted by: guest at November 23, 2007 4:51 PM
I always fill out the survey just to make sure us renters who make way below 100K are counted! Um...anyone else out there?
Posted by: Carol Gardens at November 23, 2007 6:04 PM
Yes, Carol Gardens, me too.
Posted by: guest at November 23, 2007 6:29 PM
Crown Heights Represent!
Posted by: guest at November 23, 2007 7:30 PM
Bump all that! What I wanna know is: ARE YOU BRINGING BROOKLYN RECORD BACK?!?
Posted by: guest at November 23, 2007 10:15 PM
I think people exaggerate their incomes and education a lot. It is quite difficult to have a self survey where you expect people to be truly honest about their incomes and education. Its sort of like those sub prime mortgage applications where people are expected to report what they make without any checks!!
Posted by: guest at November 24, 2007 6:08 AM
oh brother 6:08am. i took the survey and answered all honestly. it was anonymous, so why lie?
Posted by: guest at November 24, 2007 4:35 PM
wow, brownstoner should raise his advertising rates based on this survey
Posted by: guest at November 26, 2007 8:54 AM
