Please Take the Brownstoner Reader Survey

penciltest1.jpgA lot's changed since we last asked readers to take a survey back in February to coincide with our leap into full-time entrepreneurship and first real push for advertising. Since then, we've (thankfully) gotten over the initial hump of "Oh my God, will this work," we've hired a writer and increased the number of posts and we've started producing video for the site. In the meantime, the assemblage of ads on the front page has evolved organically and it's now a little more cluttered and disorganized than we'd like, so we're hoping to clean things up and revamp the way we sell ads as of the first of the new year. To that end, and to reflect the fact that there are quite a few more readers now than nine months ago, we're hoping to impose upon you to take a couple of minutes and fill out the reader survey we've put together. It should be pretty interesting for those of you who visit on a regular basis to see the results—we promise to share!
Thanks a lot.

My thoughts - maybe there's a better way to organize the Forum so that different trades like electricians and plumbers can be listed with reader's comments about each. Basically, can there be a better way to search for forum postings? A search result can be all over the place.

How about a way to hunt down The What and block his silly, hysterical rants so people can have an intelligent conversation?

Can't stand what Brownstoner has become - I only read the forum. It is unusual for me even to be looking at this now. It's a shame, but the lowlifes have taken over and Brownstoner does nothing but enable them.

I would love a better search feature. I use the existing search feature to look up for technical questions from the forum and or houses that have been discussed in the past. The current search feature is really cumbersome with lots of wrong hits. But the info on the website is really good, so I struggle through. Get the google please!

I wish there was a way to reach through my computer monitor and grab hold of some of your regular posters, particularly dt, Gardens Gal, Montrose Morris and a few others. I could then proceed to split their foul heads open with a machete.

7:22 You forgot a gew others. Donatella, Brenda from Flatbush, Armchair Warrior, Bob Marvin.

Habitual and sorrowful. Need lives. The What is actually putting more intellect back in to the site. Its fabulous.

Great. Two examples of the kind of people who make moderators on this site necessary. Probably the same person, anyway.

If the desire is to make this site a repository of people such as 7:22 and 8:16, the What, and other foul mouthed, insulting, vitriolic, haters - it is well on the way.

Mr. B - ypur original, enthusiastic loyal readers are fast disappearing, replaced by the kind of people one would get up and move away from at a party. The middle ground between a free for all and a cheering section would be moderators.

I don't know - the banter still seems quite good to me. Unfortunately, real estate in NYC is a very complicated subject, and personal desires frequently replace reason and thoughtful analysis.

Brownstoner still provides a central source of news and happenings in the real estate market, and that's a good thing. The internet will always attract extremes, it's just the nature of the beast.

Besides, a lot of the conflict is actually quite good. People disagree with me all the time, and more than a few vitriolic posts have been hurled in my direction, but in the end I've actually changed some of my personal opinions.

In the end, the truth always lies between the extremes. 10:24 makes a good point. Most parties are filled with people who are looking more for self affirmation than interesting, mind expanding conversation. At a typical Brooklyn party, one need merely give people the opportunity to talk about themselves endlessly and they will love you. While it's a fun game to play when you're looking for some ass or to experiment with human psychology, it's not really a party in the truest sense of the word.

Once upon a time, getting drunk and arguing was the very definition of partying. A party was a time of limited restraint - an escape from the constraint of life.

Personally, I would take a hater any day over a boring, soulless drone who demonstrates as much passion as a rock. Hate is the great motivator of life. The great artists created art because they hated the flawed world in which they lived. The first man to build a house did so because he hated sitting in a cave. We first domesticated animals because we hated the hard work agriculture required. We first organized armies because we hated being the victim of attacks by others.

So be strong, stick to your guns, and keep the debate alive.

Polemicist, there is a vast difference between someone arguing that your ideas/statistics/forcasts make no sense, or are totally whack, and someone who advocates splitting someone's head with a machete, or performing some gross sexual act on them. What does that have to do with real estate?

Maybe because I got over being twenty-something and hip and edgy a while back, I don't feel that that kind of banter brings anything to the site. Plenty of people here are witty, sarcastic, smart, even angry and bitter, and can discuss any topic without using over the top profanity or mention of people's sexual organs. It's not too much to ask that people be at least civil.

Posted by: guest at November 16, 2007 12:23 PM

The What makes the most sense on this site. Sorry but that is the truth. Also informing people about real estate and brownstones even if the conversation gets edgy is one thing. Insulting people who work and are repudible with no regard for their level of standard is another. This site has become a haven for people who basically are upset and have missed the market. The "unbrownstoner" if you may. Like the economy it too will dissapear in a while.
