BREAKING: Bloomie Announces Navy Yard Historical Center

bloombergnavy110707.jpg
A few moments ago, Mayor Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Quinn joined Navy Yard head Andrew Kimball, its chairman Alan Fishman and Beep Markowitz to announce the creation of a new Historical Center at the site of Building 92 along Flushing Avenue. The city will be kicking in $10 million to create the center (while another $5 million is raised privately), which will be developed in partnership with the Brooklyn Historical Society. The project includes the restoration of Building 92 (see photo on the jump) in addition to the construction of a new 25,000-square-foot building; the anchor tenant for the new building will be the Brooklyn Center for the Urban Environment. The two structures will share a small parking lot and entrance on Flushing, the first step in the Yard's effort to engage the community outside its walls. Quinn would be a good candidate for Mayor next...

Um, what about the Admiral's Row??? Oh right, those existing historic buildings need to be demolished for a supermarket.

That seems like a whole lot of money for this. Who is the audience for a Navy Yard historical center?

Alright, I'll take it.
A consolation prize for the loss of the admirals' row.
But wow! that new building is all MOMA'd out
or something. What are hey putting in that?
I wonder if it is all Bloomies Foundation money?
No one asked for this, so of course that is what our billionaire mayor funds. He really is a piece of work. Thank goodness preservationists did not ask for this particular building to be saved because in that case it would be lint.

15M works out to approx. 430 psf to restore the existing structure and building out the new 25,ooo sf site, plus the parking and grounds. Sounds about right for legite construction.
build away!

Which government site can provide me with the FAR of a particular building?

Not that this is a political blog, but to address 12:18, Quinn will definitely be running for Mayor '09... that's the word on the street.

That looks like a lot of hoopla to save one building. What's the catch? Probably demolishing Admiral's Row. It looks good though I must say, I like the combo of old and new.

There used to be a second-hand/army navy type store at the Bavy Yard. Anyone know if it's still around? I'm guessing not.

what a joke. that's a lot of money to invest in some stupid gesture while admirals row, a historic site if there are any in america, sits left to rot and be torn down (by mayor bloomberg himself!). get a clue bloomberg you idiot!!!

Viva Daniella! Viva Daniella!

There may be more historical significance to that specific building than you realize.

Army/Navy store is gone... but only in the past year or so. I bought a pair of boots and gloves there last August.

Posted by: guest at November 7, 2007 3:42 PM

Yes. You people who are saying that this building is nothing compared to Admirals Row should do some research into both sites. What you'll find will surprise you. This building is way more important from both a historic and architectural standpoint than all 10 Admirals ROw houses combined.

ANd as for the audience - you should know that the Navy Yard is constantly bobmarded with requests to set up a historical center. This is in response to all those requests.
