Bathroom Reno #3: Marble All Around

Here's the third bathrooom renovation submission we received in response to last week's request. It's a 6-by-6-foot space next to the kitchen that was a total disaster when the house was purchased. The new owner did a gut renovation, creating custom cabinetry and using a mix of travertino romano and travertino niche marble across the walls and surfaces. The only pieces that are not in place yet are the frameless shower door and the brushed nickel fixtures from Restoration Hardware. It would be interesting to see how this fits in with the aesthetic of the rest of the house.

A bit heavy on the marble for my taste. Looks like a mausoleum.

Didn't think I was a fan of the travertine marble, but this is really pretty and tastefully done. Although the finishes might be a little more suited to a bigger space.

It is a bathroom? what does it matter "how it fits in with the aesthetic of the rest of the house"????
Bathroom doors are generally kept closed and I imagine one next to the kitchen will definitely be kept closed.

While I think the room could do with some non stone space, it looks clean and upscale which I imagine what the owners were going for. Im sure once the finishing touches are in, it will be quite impressive.
I do love the window. Now that is a luxury in a brownstone!

Great colors. A lot of marble comes off like the Venetian in Las Vegas, but this is just to my taste. Floor to ceiling marble is also really easy to keep clean; just get a windshield squeegee on a long pole, spray with vinegar/water mix, quick wipe, and you're done. ..just have to remember to do it weekly so scum doesn't build up.

The problem is that the place is trying too hard to be impressive. That is why, to me at least, is becomes "classy" rather than tasteful.

Not enough gold accents to go with all of that marble.
Time to "bling" it up, as they say.
(you know who they are, don't you?)

Any idea what the renovation cost of the one in the picture was? Doubt it was $3K

Bravo, splendid job.
Looks wonderful so far.

this is great. probably really easy to clean and will hold up well too.
did you go with all stone to prevent mold/mildew issues in part?
Posted by: guest at November 19, 2007 12:36 PM
Does this have radiant heat or some other kick ass heating system in there. Must be arctic in there with all that stone.
Posted by: guest at November 19, 2007 12:46 PM
this looks great.

The rectangular tiles are very attractive and I love the marble counter top.
The most elegant bathroom I ever used was in an old elegant hotel in London. everything was marble and the nickel faucets and shower heads (from the 1920's) were massive and looked like they came from the engine works of an ocean liner.
Marble, when done right, is incomparably beautiful, in my opinion.

It's nice and looks very clean, but all that marble is too cold for me .. burrr. A good job nevertheless.
I'll make no comment this time on the window :p

I know it's hard to take photos of these small rooms, but can we see the other side of the room? There is a toilet, right?
Posted by: Park Sloper at November 19, 2007 1:32 PM
Is the toilet also marble?

Travertine belongs in long island mcmansions. Let me guess, this is somewhere in bayridge? The owners saw a lot of marble on their honeymoon in italy and wanted to bring it home. Travertine tile works when it's 400+ years old in the Italian countryside, not in your tiny house here.
I have to agree with 11:42. If you use the word "classy", you're not.

Hi,
The Bathroom was done by John Bevalaqua of Square Bid Contracting, and the choice of marble was two fold.
The first, obviously ease of maintenance and mold/mildew prevention, secondly we felt the mix of colors and textures, such as using the more porous and rougher stone like the 'scavos'(sp) used in the shower stall against the smoothness of the rest of the marble in the bathroom gave it another dimension, and a beautiful color palate, which has since been enhanced by a sealer.
The bathroom has a standard cast iron radiator, and the toilet is a biscuit colored Kohler.
Never been to Vegas, but was thinking of putting a slot machine in the kitchen tho.

We have some marble-phobes on this blog.
Maybe missing a few marbles of their own.

If you put a slot machine in the kitchen, can I come over? If history is any indication, I'll be leaving a good bit of my money behind.
I love the color of the shower marble.

Sorry to pile on, but this color makes me think of all those HGTV shows about southern calif house flippers.
Posted by: guest at November 19, 2007 4:48 PM
i like it! it's probably nice and clean and functional for the people that live there.
Posted by: guest at November 19, 2007 4:53 PM
Classy!

"Travertine tile works when it's 400+ years old in the Italian countryside, not in your tiny house here."
says who? you?
seems like more than half of the people here like it.

Bargain Queen here....FYI, Weisman's on MacDonald Ave has the best prices on travertine and tumbled marble. (or had 2 years ago, anyway)
I bought my Dad a slot machine for his bday one year. It's just sitting there collecting dust. Too bad it's down in Florida or I might've had some takers here.

Maybe the photos don't do it justice, but I also find it very cold and vaguely cheesy. Oy, one has to have a thick skin to submit your stuff here.
