Whole Foods Opens Up to the Community
Although construction on the Whole Foods at Third Street and Third Avenue has yet to begin, passersby have been able to take in an eyeful of the massive property for a few days now. Several panels of wooden fencing near the Third Street Bridge have been down since at least Friday night (and possibly longer), according to a source. As shown above, the site's open to the street, which means anyone who's so inclined can conduct a first-hand examination of the parcel's environmentally challenged soil. The company's progress on the clean up of that soil is, at present, unknown.

This store will NEVER open!
WF announced in 2002 or 2003 it is now almost 2008 and they dont even have a stick in the ground.
The land is too polluted to be able to be economically viable for this type of use - and it will be worse for housing.

I saw this on Saturday night and promptly crossed the street for a little exploring. The site is enormous, but after all this time, it still reeks of petrochemicals.
They've got their work cut out for them.

Whoever sold a superfund site to Whole Foods deserves an award as a really special kind of NY Hero.
It amuses me that a lot of the protest about this site is about added pollution from cars. Who'd even notice??
Ahh, the irony. I really love Brooklyn.

The broker that sold them the land also has the Brooklyn Bridge listed on his site.

That's not petrochemicals you smell, that's the pervasive scent of doom.

When you really think about it. Do you know what your current home was built on? Or the building you work in? That being said,I wont be shopping there.
