What's the Rx for the Old Eckerd Space on 9th Street?

5thaveoldeckerd.JPG
Rite Aid's take over of Eckerd apparently made the chain's owners decide that two RIte Aids within a block of each other were maybe a bit redundant, so the former Eckerd space at 9th Street and 5th Avenue is now up for grabs. (The Rite Aid at 10th Street and 5th Avenue is still going strong, though.) The 11,000-square-foot space (big!) will be leased for a 15-year term, according to broker Joel Karasik of NYC Realty, who says there's been a far amount of interest from "national firms." Karasik wouldn't tell us anything else about what sort of user might take the space except that "it definitely won't be a drug store." What would you like to see here? GMAP

Daffy's, Marshalls, or Strawberry

Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 4:04 PM

Most likely it will be a bank, although the Astoria Federal Savings back may have a non-compete clause that prevents this.

It's a tough space. The design really requires an actual store. No restaurant or other entertainment venue will work there.

Posted by: Polemicist at October 18, 2007 4:05 PM

This is going to end up as some national discount shoe chain or ladies casual clothing store. It reminds me of the beautiful national city bank space on canal that is now a payless shoes or something like that.

Maybe it'll become an urban outfitters.
Why not a ricky's since that guy seems to live in the slope now?

Its going to be the Apple Store

Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 4:10 PM

I don't know what I'd like to see, but I'm guessing bank.

Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 4:12 PM

Heresy, I know, but I'd like to see a Gap. Or an Apple Store.

Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 4:14 PM

I don't really have a concept of what kindof space 11,000 sf entials, but what about a West Elm?

I'm not a fan of the store, but seems like a GAP would do well there.

Can we please all decide right here and now that if it's a bank, we will boycott it?

It's the only way to stop them, i think.

Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 4:16 PM

Sure, an Apple Store. Steve Jobs needs your money, suckers.

I second the motion for Trader Joe's

Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 4:32 PM

4:30, you're seriously off you're rocker if you think any of those stores would touch that corner with a 10-foot pole. A 1-second look at the zip code's demographics by their location research department would scare them off.

brooks brothers

Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 4:34 PM

Whatever it is, it will seriously determine the direction of the neighborhood in terms of the actual retail and the "lifestyle" developers are trying to sell.

Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 4:40 PM

why is that, 4:34??

We need another broker there.

Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 4:41 PM

Truth be known, it is gonna be a great place for a rave. It will be filled with ecstasy filled, red bull drinking teens, yes those thousands of teens that have finally grown up all along Park Slope.

Go ahead, have your 2 Apple stores (#3 and #7 on your list) -- this way you can buy 2 iPods, 2 iBooks, etc. Would definitely make you look twice as cool.

Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 4:46 PM

It's not a good spot for Trader Joe's although I'd love one in Park Slope too.

Somewhere closer to the real wealth up in the North Slope closer to 7th would make more sense from a demographic standpoint.

Problem is there are very few large spaces in Park Slope.

I hear the Dagostino spot across from the hospital is still for rent.

That would make more sense to me for either a Trader Joe's or Apple.

This is still on the verge of 99 cent land.

Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 4:46 PM

It was a joke, 4:46.

Obviously I REALLY would like an Apple Store in Park Slope.

Are you REALLY that offended by that??!

You seem angry with the world.

Anything we can do to help?

Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 4:53 PM

I'd like to see Banana Republic, TJ Maxx or Zaras. It will probably rent to a bank or another drugstore.

Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 4:55 PM

NOOOO banana republic.

it's overpriced crap.

i think it's too small for a tjmaxx. by far.

Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 4:57 PM

south slope is still very hispanic and it's so cheap looking a on 5th ave. it could use something more upscale, but agree that it's tough to picture a decent retailer moving in there.

Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 4:57 PM

it's truly bizarre to me that people are under the impression south slope--if we can even consider 9th south slope at this point (i realize geographically it is, but people seemto think of south slope in a more socio-economic way)--to have such a dramatically different demographic than north slope. i know many, many people living between 9th and 20th st. that would LOVE to see a trader joes or something useful move in. i think the difference is they are primarily single people, not families, which if you really think about it, just means they probably have more disposable income.

Posted by: ms_boerum at October 18, 2007 4:58 PM

OK, forget Corcoran then. Brown Harris all the way.

Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 5:03 PM

Actually that location is quite hot... with all the foot traffic, new restaurants and shops close by, that location is slowly but surely losing it's old tarnished image.

Posted by: bren at October 18, 2007 5:03 PM

yeah, it's a really great location. i agree.

hope that the broker does some good work trying to get something good.

maybe he'll take a look at this site for some ideas...

so STOP TALKING ABOUT BANKS!

Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 5:08 PM

I agree. The location is quite hot. The space is also under a NYSC gym. Also, the new restaurants, bar/lounges, etc., are making the jump over 9th Street into the South Slope.

Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 5:13 PM

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make it an Apple Store.

Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 5:24 PM

3. Trader Joe's

It's seriously needed. I'm SO annoyed and tired of our only two choices being teeny boutiquey overpriced gourmet food stores or the opposite end of the spectrum, Key Foods and Associated who cater to the lowest-common-denominator.

Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 8:41 PM

9th Street and 5th Avenue is South Brooklyn. It's not a part of Park Slope, south or otherwise.

Too bad the site is 11,000 square feet and not 110,000. A Wal*Mart would be great there.

Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 9:25 PM

I would love an Equinox....right under NYSC

Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 9:27 PM

not to mention, the space is too small for "a slope bashing re education center"-

Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 9:30 PM

Oh, a Trader Joe's would be my first and favorite choice.

I do hope they take some care in getting a good tenant there. It will truly change the direction of the area, which is already heading in a more upscale way, but still decidedly dirty/cheap looking with a few decent nuggets tucked in. I live on 8th St, and 5th gets dirtier and less upscale right around 7/8th sts, with the exception of Rachel's and a couple of other places.

1:10- Do you know that there are a ridiculous number of sex parties going on in Brooklyn these days- even in the Slope?

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 11:20 AM

crate & barrel

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 11:23 AM

so funny you should mention that 11:20.

there ARE a ton of sex parties.

I just heard about this huge gay one that takes place right here in the center slope!!!!

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 11:28 AM

Bowling alley

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 11:35 AM

Sex parties? How come B'stoner doesn't have a forum with postings about this?

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 11:44 AM

The real problem with the south slope is the population density is MUCH less than the north slope. Downzoning the south slope was a real mistake, as the population density will now never be able to achieve what the rest of the neighborhood has. Retail in Brooklyn is based on foot traffic and sales per square foot. Right now, the south stretch of 5th Avenue is a regional destination for many poor and minority people. Anything that caters to a wealthier demographic in that area will have to draw from the local residents exclusively.

Posted by: Polemicist at October 19, 2007 11:56 AM

i just assumed that NYSC would take it over to make a mega NYSC, with pool, rock climbing wall, tennis court, sex parties, etc.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 12:19 PM

um...11:56....take a look at demographics above.

$58,000 a year median income and 800K for median home prices in 11215 is not poor.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 12:26 PM

Could everyone here please move to Connecticut, pretty please? Hispanics, low rent and poor folks, OH MY!!. 5th ave will always have a slightly gritty feel, no matter what retailers are there. We do live in Brooklyn, not the Suburbs after all. With all the restaurants and boutiquey stuff on fifth, combined with the guaranteed steady flow of foot traffic, I think any retailer would do well here.

Please, no Trader Joes, go to C-Town (and if you say it's ghetto, you haven't been there).

I really hope this becomes a tire shop/carniceria/ flea market just to spite you all.

Have a lovely weekend at the mall jerk-offs!

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 12:27 PM

agreed, 12:27. everyone says park slope is a lily white, rich, yuppie fest. but only when it suits their arguement.

5th avenue, is...as you say gritty and i love it that way.

it's my favorite part of park slope.

nearly everyone here is a hypocrite.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 12:48 PM

There's an undercurrent brewing in the Slope my friends.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 12:59 PM

B'stoner- start posting the sex!

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 1:01 PM

C-Town is great, but I still want a Trader Joe's.

Undercurrent Microbrewery!

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 1:04 PM

There have been key parties in the Slope for quite some time--I heard that many transplants from Stuy Town started the fun. I was surprised to learn that most of these swappers are in their 30s. Is married life that dull so early on?

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 1:08 PM

Hey 12:27, please include your poseur self in that hypocrite category, mr. real-keeper.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 1:32 PM

Hi 1:32, 12:27 here.

Why would you think that I'm a hypocrite and/or a poseur?

I have no problem with most of the suggestions/wishes for new retail here. Who would have thought fancy restaurants and boutiques could make it here? The mix on 5th ave makes it really unique and I love it.
I just find it very close-minded that some don't believe high-end retail could survive in this location.

Don't mean to assume, but it seems that some are making assumptions about the preferences of certain "demographics". There are very few "poor people" in the Slope and even poor people like organic greens or a shiny new Macbook.

Nah, we already have a Mickey D's less than a block from here.

Say it loud, say it proud: TRADER JOE'S!

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 2:26 PM

Shout out to 12.27, and 2.12! Is it me or once you have a JFKFC, you're in the ghetto? Isn't there JFK Fried Chicken 10 yards away? Helloooo!!!!!!!

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 2:30 PM

1) Bring back the Burger King.

2) I would like to see a Bugaboo/McClaren/Urban Mountain Buggy Showroom. Sales Service Test Drives all under one roof. Maybe even custom detailing.

4) Subdivide the place into 22 500square foot mini stores. A small business incubator mall where creative people can escape the overpriced rents found in the center slope along 7 Avenue. I have been looking for a inexpensive place to sell my handmade acrylic "God's Eyes".

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 2:35 PM

Mc D's on 9th Street has gone up scale. Total recent gut renovation with large flat screen TV set to cartoon network or nickleodian.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 2:38 PM

"Isn't there JFK Fried Chicken 10 yards away?"

There is indeed. Had chicken from there the other night. It's delicious.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 2:42 PM

I've always wondered about that place, 2:42. Nice to hear kudos for the chicken. Anyone else want to second that?

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 3:03 PM

I think DaSilva's should open up another overpriced, bullet-proof glass, cash only wine and liquor store there. I just hope there are enough strange, surly people to hire for the expansion.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 3:04 PM

I think this place should be the first Brownstoner Pub with theme nights dedicated for all the people here to get together in person and bash each other over nightly themes i.e. neighborhood vs. neighborhood, coop vs. condo, modern vs. old, etc.

Passions run very high here and could be very entertaining to watch in person while enjoying a diverse selection of drinks. Maybe a mud pit or a boxing ring in the middle and Mr. B could be the ref.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 3:21 PM

Used to LOVE Detroit Fried Chicken on Flatbush.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 3:22 PM

Luther's Fried Chicken downtown used to be my go-to. Life hasn't been the same since they closed. Those Pakistani mo-fo's could FRY IT!

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 3:29 PM

I think it's going to be a Trader Joe's.

Posted by: guest at October 19, 2007 3:37 PM

I'll second the kudos for JFK. A couple of the young (Egyptian?) guys who work there are pretty cute too (in case you like your chicken with a side of chicken).

How about a Restoration Hardware? I'm sure they are dying to break into the Brooklyn market?

Btw thanks for the super entertaining blog above!

Applebee's

Chevy's
please

Posted by: guest at October 20, 2007 5:22 PM

I also think restoration hardware would be nice, although i'm not sure this is the right spot for it. too small, first of all.

secondly, i think somewhere up near atlantic, perhaps even the albee square area would probably where something like that would go.

but i still think bk is a few years away from its first restoration, sad to say.

Posted by: guest at October 20, 2007 9:17 PM

Is Restoration Hardware waiting until *after* the last Victorian era home has been restored before they deign to grace Brooklyn with one of their stores? Fine. Snooze = lose.

Posted by: guest at October 20, 2007 10:22 PM

it's also ridiculous that the apple capital of the world (park slope) has no apple store in sight.

or probably one of highest rates of people who would buy trader joe's with one of those either.

these retailers are behind the times.

park slope is an untapped commercial market waiting to happen.

so much disposable income.

Posted by: guest at October 21, 2007 11:56 AM

my only question is:

What will the apple store sell if everyone in Park Slope already has ipod and and Imac?

I guess they can always sell replacements when they get stolen.

Posted by: slick at October 22, 2007 5:49 AM

Slick, we're talking about Park Slope here, not Fort Greene.
