Video: Prospect Heights House Tour 2007
For those of you who missed this year's Prospect Heights House Tour (or those of you who want to relive it), we hit the streets with a cameraman in tow, checking out several of the houses and talking to some homeowners and tour go-ers. At one stop, we even bumped into Marty Markowitz who shared some thoughts with us on screen. (As with our last video, big thanks to the folks at Rumur.tv for their production skills.) For those who attended, what were the highlights of the tour?

Cool video, Mr. B!
I particularly liked 304 Prospect Place, which had some beautifully restored oak trim, wonderful pine floors, and a lovely deck and leading to an unusually deep garden. 149 St. Marks was also interesting --seemingly small from the outside, it's one of those houses with a hidden attic floor, sloping up from the front of the house toward the back, which is visible from the front only through small windows hidden in the cornice. My favorite house, however, was 153 Prospect Place. It was a fabulous blend of old (restored brownstone facade, beautiful moldings and marble fireplaces) and the new (a two-story atrium on the top two floors, with an aluminum skylight above and a glass floor below), and the owners have a decor aesthetic which particularly resonated with me. As with the other houses mentioned above, it also included a beautiful parlor-level kitchen with deck overlooking a lushly landscaped garden.
Of course, going on these house tours basically just gives me intense house envy!!! But I love seeing the surprisingly different ways that people live behind the unassuming facades of the amazing homes in Brownstone Brooklyn.

Great!! the first house was really wonderful - great artwork and exposed brick painted white is a better look imo than unpainted...
great interview with marty too! thanks for doing this

The tour was a great success and a lot of fun for everyone. Some of us were concerned that when the Crown Heights tour bombed that the Prospect Heights tour would also stumble, but in fact it went very well and I don't think I've met anyone yet who didn't enjoy the day. Who doesn't love house tours!
Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 11:23 AM
You really need to find different music for the videos. The current music is ridiculous.
Also, it totally, totally figures that you'd "bend over" for Markowitz in this video. I guess we know a little more about you now.
Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 11:29 AM
Is this up on YouTube or are you siding with Viacom?
I thought Marty was pretty honest...
Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 11:49 AM
The Crown Heights house tour did not bomb! There were some not so great houses and lots of wonderful ones.
Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 11:53 AM
You should do more video, Mr. B; that was great. For those of us real-estate fetishists on the road and missing every house tour of the season (dammit), this was at least a glimpse. Next time, maybe the cameraman could bring one of those (admittedly obnoxious) camera lights, lighting being the rub when shooting inside old, dark-ish houses--but still really enjoyed it. Especially loved the last house with that mix of modern and glass in the very-cool kitchen. Congrats to the homeowners.

For those previously claiming there's nobody in the Prospect Heights neighborhood bashing other tours, what's with this guy at 11:23am:
"Some of us were concerned that when the Crown Heights tour bombed that the Prospect Heights tour would also stumble."
That's SO completely tacky. I don't live in Crown Heights but I loathe such people. Competitiveness in general is always tacky. Anybody who is truly confident about their place in life and the place they live, feels no need whatsoever to insult someplace else. Only losers do that.

11:29, give me a break. Whatever one thinks of Marty, he should be given the respect due his office. That is only professional and polite. Of what good would it have done Mr.B to be a rude jerk on camera for the world? It would only make him look like an idiot, and certainly do nothing for the cause of Brownstoner's business, or his reputation.
If you want to find Marty at a public event and call him out, feel free. Why should anyone else commit professional suicide to prove their bona fides to an anonymous blogging community of (mostly) serious adults?

Thanks so much for posting this- was so sad to miss it. Can you continue to do this and expand to other types of community events? I would love to get to vicariously see the AY rallies, the community meetings over big projects etc., even if getting just a little taste of people's comments and the presenters' approaches.
Thanks!

Sorry, 12:08, no chip on my shoulder, I'm just pointing out the obvious. Rudeness and competitiveness shows insecurity. I'm not the only one in the world who doesn't like insecure rude people. I doubt 11:23 is a popular, well-liked, jovial guy with lots of friends. Can't I say that? I do believe I can. Just as 11:23 can state his opinion as you yourself said.
Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 12:17 PM
Disappointing, how?
More importantly, how about some observations on the PH tour? What was great, not so great?
Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 12:17 PM
Truly lots of fun to be able to get a peek
inside such lovely homes.
Thanks to the homeowners for opening their homes, and to Brownstoner and Rumur.tv...
I enjoyed the music too!
Gracious interview with Marty Markowitz...
cool!

Ooh, so clever 12:09. But you're wrong. Not everyone agrees with 11:29.
Mr. B didn't have to say anything to make Marty M. felt uncomfortable talking to a preservation-minded blogger. Everything that could have been said out loud was totally there. I actually found it far more interesting that Marty got nervous and himself made a point of referencing AY on his own, without having to be prodded by questions. Sometimes you get much more interesting things on tape just letting somebody ramble on. And that's what happened here.
Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 12:23 PM
Well, I personally thought the CH tour was a complete and utter failure, but whatever...
I liked the kids' play space that was featured in the video. Very clever and I'll be any kid would love that.
Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 12:26 PM
Crown Heights house tour certainly did not "bomb". What is your definition of "bombing"? No one ever likes every house on a tour, it depends on your tastes. They had variety and a lot to look at. I'm not that thrilled with super modern houses. That certainly doesn't mean I thought the PH tour was a failure, because they didn't please ME 100%. It was fun and interesting. Anything else is just mean spirited and uneccessary.
Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 12:27 PM
I didn't care much for the CH tour either, but let's try to maintain a bit of perspective here. It was just a *house tour*! Jeez...
Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 12:37 PM
Don't take the bait about the CH tour...better to starve a troll.
Posted by: brownstoner at October 18, 2007 12:38 PM
12:23 = Brownstoner
Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 12:38 PM
Well, in that case we'll have half of Brooklyn starving to death!
Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 12:40 PM
Yeah, Mr. B, and apparently it's better to bend over and take up of the arse from Marty. How's your sphincter today?
Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 12:42 PM
"Anybody who is truly confident about their place in life and the place they live, feels no need whatsoever to insult someplace else. Only losers do that."
repeated for hilariousness.
on topic, i thought the ph house tour was great. also, the two-second shot of the back of my head really made the video work!
Posted by: z at October 18, 2007 12:43 PM
Thanks for the video! I enjoyed it.

12:23 was me, not Mr. B and I'd tell my name except all the freakos here creep me out.
Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 1:05 PM
So did anyone on this thread actualy GO on the PH house tour and, if so, do they have any comments about the HOUSES?
Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 1:12 PM

Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 1:12 PM
It pisses me off how the Crown Heights crowd have to turn every damned thread on this blog into a discussion of CH. Enough already. There are other neighborhoods in this borough, you know.
Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 1:15 PM
I actually like the tour but would prefer a different host (I prefer Mr. B when he was anonymous). I can't help but think he's just some Blue Blood who feels he missed his true calling, TV host. And that music sounds like poser music to me. A bunch of financial types wanting to be hip who like to "gig" on the weekends. Yuck.

Like I said, total freakos.

It gets really tiresome reading all the vitriol on this site that has nothing to do with the subject at hand. Anyway, I thought the house tour was a great success, though I was disappointed that there were only six houses featured. I also visited the two Newswalk apartments, which Mr. B. didn't cover in his video, and I thought they were both incredibly cool. You have to like loft-living, of course, which explains why Mr. B. wasn't interested. And unfortunately both of the owners featured will soon have a close-up view of the Atlantic Yards building site for many years to come.

Park Sloper,
Speaking of vitriol...We only covered the properties where the owners gave us explicit permission. FWIW, we love loft living. Lived in one in Little Italy for four years in the late '90s.
Posted by: brownstoner at October 18, 2007 3:33 PM
What a huge bummer this thread is. You don't have to like Mr B.'s video, but at least he delivered some serious content by creating it. Meanwhile the vast majority of these comments are just a complete waste of time and nothing to do with the house tour.
Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 3:59 PM
Mr. B -- don't pay any mind to the resentful, rude trolls (is that redundant?) who have nothing better to do with their time than be negative. We thought your video was really good (and of course appreciate that you put our house on it, with and without Marty Markowitz) and think that it's great that you take the time, and energy, to put something like this together. We hope that you don't let the petty jerks diminish your enthusiasm for the community-building work you do....thanks again. And, FWIW, we really enjoyed being on the house tour -- especially seeing the wide, diverse swath of Brooklynites who seem to be as obsessed with real estate and design as we are.... it's nice to know that we're in such good company and it was nice to further broaden our acquaintance with so many lovely neighbors. -Debra & Marc

Give me a fucking a break, Debra & Marc. Community building? He's about to internet race war.
Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 6:36 PM
Note 6:38's post has an underscore at the end, which means it's not THE Brownstoner but an imposter. Can't believe someone actually goes through the effort of doing that. Why bother?
The video was great and anybody who is generous enough to open up their homes to strangers for education and pure enjoyment, deserve a lot of appreciation.

I went on the PH house tour and i was disappointed. Honestly, I found the houses pretty dull and ordinary looking
Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 8:15 PM
Very nice, Brownstoner. Next up: Bedford-Stuyvesant. Will you be filming there as well?
Posted by: guest at October 18, 2007 9:18 PM
8:15, if you thought the PH tour was lame, you should have gone on the CH tour. I could barely stay awake.
